Some nice Small Queens you have here. One of my favorite stamps is this one postmarked VANKLEEK HILL AP 6 1868. The release date of the Large Queen Issue was April 1, 1868.

Here's a 1/2 Penny Proof. This was the first Pence Issue stamp I became interested in. I collected this stamp because of all the Major Re-entries on the Half Penny Plate. This is the strongest Re-entry at plate position 120 (Position 100 on the perforated 1/2d sheet)

the 3c is the Vampire Bite Boy, that 3 cent is nice - it certainly shows how much luck can be involved with finding plate varieties on cancelled stamps. It wouldn't take too much of a sloppy cancellation before those spots on the neck would have been covered. Ryan

Ryan,
Very true. If that 3c Large Queen was sent on April 1 rather than April 6, that stamp would probably be worth a $1000 easy. Only a few days difference 147 years ago.

frog, Here are some from the Cents Issue you were asking about. You are right in that the 5c Beaver is a perfect stamp for looking for varieties. There are so many small varieties on this stamp because the plate was re-entered 10 times. And there are hundreds of documented re-entries and plate flaws. Check this out. I got this using the retro-reveal website. It's an image of the 3d Cracked Plate at position 31. The cracks are at the lower right.

Jim, you might not have found this thread yet - we had an interesting (to me, anyway) brief discussion on cracked plates on the 3d beaver. In this case, as with your example, the crack happened on the master die rather than the printing plate, and the flaw resulted in a lack of ink at the crack. thestampforum.boards.net/thread/461/canada-red-beaver-cracked-plateRyan

ryan, you're not going to put much past me on Canadian stamps. You are correct in saying that there were cracks on the Master Die on the 3d Beaver. These cracks are in several places on the stamp. One is vertically in the middle of the Beaver and one in the upper right (as you have mentioned) and one is below the P of POSTAGE. I'll detail these out when I have a moment. This stamp above is Scott 4ix, the position A31 Cracked Plate. Here it is so you can compare with the B&W.

Here's a somewhat nondescript 3 cent Small Queen. What caught my eye here was the town's name on the postmark - I'm no geography star but I know plenty of Canadian town names, so when I saw this one starting with "Farran's" it made me scratch my head because I certainly couldn't come up with a guess. It turns out that Farran's Point, ON is now an underwater ghost town. It was permanently flooded as a result of construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1958. It's one of the 10 such communities which are collectively known as The Lost Villages. Ryan

A Classic 10d stamp that paid the 10d Cunard Transatlantic rate to England. This copy has a beautiful re-entry down the left side of the design - from plate position 70.

Picked these three up at the North Toronto Stamp Club bourse today (thinking of joining the club!) Large Queen #24. Some pull perfs, but I still think pretty nice. Large Queen #30 and Jubilee #60. The cancel is pretty heavy, but these get pretty dear up around this face value.

True it does Rod. It is what D.M.Lacelle calls, in his book Fancy Cancels on Canadian Stamps 1855 to 1950 (BNAPS 2000) a Geometric or Radial. I think it most closely matches #1518 on this page, which he describes as Similar to 1516 but with 'squared ends'

I just received this small queen (10c dull rose lilac, Scott 40) recently won at auction. Through purchases like this and the generosity of forum members, I've got the beginning of what I believe is shaping up to be a nice Canada collection!

I had forgotten how many stamps I had bought over the spring/summer . I started to sort them, stick them in glassines and put in place inside sheet protectors on the right page, only to find other glassines already there with others in them. It's going to be a long fun filled winter catching up.Most of my slim budget is spent these days on first cent and large queens issues.I can't wait to find time to delve into all these goodies.

jimjung, Is there an Unitrade publication for the large queen issue similar to the one for first cent issue Any other affordable publications out there Only books I've seen are over $100. Not looking to plate them just like pictures of re-entries and plate flaws.

frog, Duckworth's is the bible for the Large Queen collector but it is indeed well over $100. If you can find one used, I'm sure it would still be expensive. Most people who collect Large Queen stamps collect them for the shades and the different papers. The unlisted varieties are not well-known. Unitrade actually has all the printing varieties that are collectable. If you are serious about the LQ's you can look thru the BNAPS LQ/SQ Study Group newsletters which are free on the BNAPS Site. The other place I know of is Ralph Trimble's website re-entries.com and a new website flyspecker.com. Course, you can always ask me. If I don't know the answer, I'm sure I can find out. If you want to collect varieties, it is the First Cents Issue that is the favourite. There are many varieties to collect and collectors even plate the stamps. There are books that will help you do this and they are not too expensive. I bought Geoffrey Whitworth's book "The Decimal Stamps of Canada" for $25 and there is a special book just for the 5c Beaver which I got for $30. You might even get these cheaper if you look. Here are two beauties from the Decimal Issue. The first is the Major Re-entry at position 28 and the one below is the Log In Waterfall Variety.

Thanks for the info. jimjung, I'll bookmark the flyspecker and BNAPS links.Ralph's site is already in the list.I picked up a Unitrade handbook on first cent issues.it is a well written and very handy reference at a reasonable price with nice pictures. Not overkill either like ten pages of good info. That's why I asked if there was a Large Queens handbook I had missed. I didn't realize you had your stamps pictured at flyspecker.I for one thank you for sharing them with others to see those varieties first hand.

Been adding to the back of the book a bit lately. Here are a couple War Tax and a seal. I apologize for the horrible centering on the MR2b, but I got tired of waiting: The MR3 is a margin copy that has an interesting look with the perfs, I think: I prefer hinged, but in this case, I had to settle for never hinged. Finally, OX4, again with the goofy perfs: Is it the cold? Does the perforator freeze up?
