Bangladesh has about the size of Georgia, with about half as many people as the complete US. Independence was achieved from Pakistan in an atrocious struggle in 1971. Although plagued by political turmoil and corruption, the country recently developed from the group of the poor countries to the low middle income nations.
During the war of independence stamps of Pakistan were overprinted locally, mostly handstamped. Several thousands different of that kind exist. The first regular series of the independent Bangladesh was issued on July 29th,1971.

The previous series was overprinted after the capitulation of the Pakistan Army on Dec.16th1971, what ended the war of independence. However only three values were issued on Dec.20th,1971.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was released from prison in West-Pakistan and returned to Bangladesh on Jan 10th,1972. He took over the government and later the presidency. Corruption, lawlessness,a great famine were problems he had to face, but he was more a reason for the problems, than part of a solution. His rule became more and more authoritarian, till he and most of his family were killed in a coup attempt in 1975.

Several of the early Bangladesh stamps exist imperforated. Most likely they were never issued as such.

The s.s. was issued on Dec.31st,1974. It must have been a restricted sale,as it is disproportionate more expensive, than the stamp series.
