In addition to the cut up USPS Priority Mail envelopes, these are some recent additions to my collection. It seems many are food packaging.

Most of the ones I get are just plain cardboard pieces. One weak stiffener I am getting looks like old photo album pages! They aren't really that strong, as the envelopes are folded in half to fit in my minuscule mail box at the post office.

I like this thread idea. Most envelope stiffeners are pretty run of the mill like this one that I received as part of an eBay lot I received a couple of days ago. The seller cut up the envelope box after he finished using all the envelopes.

Long ago, I received a cereal box piece as a mailing stiffener and I liked it so much I saved a scan of it (photo details give me a date of 2004). Frost is my favourite flavour! Yes, a Canadian brand of cereal (no charge for extra "U"s up here) - a store-brand version of Frosted Flakes, if I recall correctly ... Ryan

Most sellers package carefully. Though many use way too much tape! But occasionally, I get something packaged like the person had never mailed anything in their life.
Last week I got a standard business envelope (4x9.5) where the seller put a plain piece of cardboard that is (4x5) or about half the envelope and marks the envelope, "Do Not Bend." Priceless.

Like most people here, I get a variety of cut-up cardboard inserts for the envelopes, and mostly they're equal to the size of the envelope. My gripe is more with the larger packages and how sellers use two miles of sticky tape - so when I'm trying to sort out the paper, card etc. for the re-cycling collections, I end up spending what seems like hours removing the sticky stuff. So what did we use before the invention of Sellotape and carpet tape??

yes, as a child I remember string certainly - and this was given an added bit of security by adding sealing wax to the knots - apparently you can still get the stuff.

When I use tape, I usually fold over an end so the recipient can more easily remove it. Makes life much easier. I have had packages inside envelopes/boxes completely encased in tape! Same with APS Stamp Store offerings. What's with ALL that dang tape? KISS is what I always expound!

I was going to mention the sealing wax along with string but thought it might be a little too far in the distant past for some of the forum's younger readers.

This one, shown front and back, protected a spacefiller that I had won at auction. The stiffener on the opposite side was a plain piece of cardboard.

This was received yesterday -- one of the many factors adding to rising postage costs.

In today's letter from Scotland was this, front & backside... Inside were modern Great Britain commemoratives, Portugal, Austria and East Germany, and of course, I bought stamps I already have! Although the two GB comem's were to add to 2 sets I was missing one or two stamps. Maybe more to add to that give away one of these days.

This is interesting and fun to see what others have used for stiffeners. I use pizza boxes, cereal boxes, popcorn boxes, yea people know what I eat. I was making it the size of the envelope, but the rising cost of postage I've trimmed it down. And hardly any tape, just enough to seal the plastic covering to keep that stamps protected from weather.

Received this stiffener today in a small envelope with 2 booklets enclosed. It's printed with the Hagner name & made in Sweden. Interesting (not)??

It is not much of a stiffener but received some stamps in a cut in half plastic protective sleeve. I assume it was better protection from elements than a glassine. Being someone who does not like throwing away much, I put some soaked stamps in it and put it in a binder.

Somewhat bizarre but very effective. A plastic trading card sleeve complete with a trading card! Protecting a British Newspaper Parcel Stamp.

I don't remember who used this stiffener, but I deemed it attractive enough to save. It resurfaced today while going through a box of "junk" covers/stamps and seals.
