Pietro Annigoni's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is my favourite, so this item commemorating Stampex 1963 is one I like. A bit dinged up, unfortunately. Ryan

Pietro Annigoni's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is my favourite, so this item commemorating Stampex 1963 is one I like. A bit dinged up, unfortunately. Ryan It's my favourite portrait of the Queen too. the sheet showing the colour seperations has always been one of my favourite GB Exhibition sheets too. Just to add a bit of info. 50,000 sheets were printed in photogravure and they sold for 2/6 at the show. I would say that was not cheap for the ordinary collector !! It is still popular today and often sells for above it's market value. Pietro Annigoni opened the show on the morning of the 15th and signed a small but unknown number of copies of this sheet. A 1995 valuation of £5 was given to the sheet by Glenn Morgan for the excellent British Philatelic Exhibitions catalogue. 3 years ago a signed copy as well as the 'Multiple' SPECIMEN overprint version were on offer at eBay. I bid 10 times OVER the catalogue price for the signed sheet and 5 times for Specimen sheet and was left standing on both counts !! They sold for £86 and £79 respectively. I have never seen them anywhere since. [But I never give up hope]. Here is the single SPECIMEN sheet. Londonbus1

Nice material ! Very nice Maltese Cross sheet. First time I've seen it ! Below is a 1976 Stampex Sheet [actually thin card] commemorating the the Bicentenary of the United States. The sheet reproduces the 24c 1869 US stamp and a painting by Trumbull of the signing of the Independence. In original colours. Sheet designed by D.Rivett and printed in Lithography by Bradbury Wilkinson & Co.Ltd. Version shown is a scarce Presentation edition overprinted 'SPECIMEN' in Black. [Ack. British Philatelic Exhibitions: G.H.Morgan & G.Wilson] Londonbus1

One of my favourite UK Exhibition sheets. The Czechoslovak Philatelic Exhibition was the only other Philatelic Exhibition held in the UK during the War apart from the two Centenary shows in London and Bournemouth. The lovely sheet below is by Waterlow & Sons in Intaglio Perf 13½. It consists of 5 stamp-like labels. The Exhibition was held at Grosvenor Place in London, 8-20 November 1943. Sheets also exist with Czech Army Field Post Office [UK] cancels in Green on each label and also with SPECIMEN overprint. Neither are in this posters collection ! Londonbus1

It will soon be Halloween...so you'll be sure not to forget this one !! Wembley'97 was held at the Wembley Exhibition Centre ands sponsored by Royal Mail and Stanley Gibbons. Each year had a theme and for 1997 the theme was Horror, to coincide with the 'Tales and Legends-Horror Stories' issue for May of that year. Walsall Security Printers had a fine idea for their stand and issued some scary sample stamps and matching envelopes which were both for sale. All proceeds went to the NSPCC. This show had long been my favourite in London and I always planned my holidays around it. When Wembley2000 was cancelled it was the end of an era for me. Great venue, great dealers and a lot of fun. A real all-comers event. For the 1997 show, the organizers had a giant Dracula and Frankenstein walking around all day and the Children loved it. There was a Horror Childrens auction too, where spooky things would happen at unexpected moments. I have never seen so many young and youth at a show in the UK. When this event died, it seemed the fun stuff for kids died too. At London2010, I worked for some hours on the Stamp Active stand for kids at the big International Exhibition. Only a handful of kids passed by all day and while it was fun, there were no activities, and no atmosphere of the 'young' variety. Wembley was, and still is, sadly missed. Londonbus1

LONDON 1980. A big International Exhibition was held at Earl's Court between 6-14 May. Many of the big printing companies produced souvenirs for the event. One such item was a lovely sheet of labels that reproduced paintings from the National Gallery. Printed by Harrison & Sons on gummed paper, Perf 14½x14. The sheet was issued in a protective folder which listed all of the paintings. More from this Exhibition another time. Londonbus1

These are a couple of items that I recently picked up and relate to the London International Stamp Exhibition of 1960 that was held at the Royal Festival Hall from 9 to 16 July. They form part of my small but growing Cinderella collection

I am sure I have a box for this type of collecting.
Those 5 x 1960 World Expos are great lookers!

Philatex, Bournemouth, 1976
The sheet shows an unaccepted design for the 1969 Concorde issue, complete with the incorrect spelling of Philip [Sharland] !!

Stampex 1965. 19-27 March, Central Hall,London. Stanley Gibbons issued an interesting sheet showing possible ideas for a pictorial definitive series. What are your opinions of the designs ?? Would they have been more popular than the Machins ?? Mmmmm! All in all a nice sheet, not common and nicely printed by Harrisons with all the relevant information. The sheet was also given away later with copies of Gibbons Stamp Monthly. Londonbus1

And so to my most unexpected purchase during my recent visit to the UK. I was on my way out of the Stafford Stamp Show, but seeing the pouring rain that awaited me, decided to sit down at one more table. It was table 1, strangely enough, at least that's what it said in the programme. I spied an album of Cinderellas on the table and it turned out he had 6 albums !! I managed to spend a large chunk of my Stamp budget on this one table, and a large chunk of that chunk on the same item ! Let me explain. I came across an unusual sheet of KGV Jubilee Essay reproductions on plain card. Nothing so special but attractive nonetheless. No info, just the Essays in 6 colours, but the design looked familiar. I asked politely if he knew anything about them and it turned out he knew a lot about them....he was selling them for the organizer of a long-forgotten Philatelic Weekend and Exhibition from 1975 and this was one of the souvenirs. This one however was issued in very small quantities for visiting dignitaries. I recognized the design because I had one of the other souvenirs which was given to all visitors. The first two issues of my Catalogue did not list this sheet. I was excited. He had a few copies and I purchased them all !! My wallet was empty but I went out into the rain and sludge a happy man. For reference, the Essay shows a Vandyk head and was most likely by Barnett Freedman although I have yet to find it. The sheet was issued in very limited quantities for the 1975 North Western Philatelic Federation Weekend at the Town Hall in Hyde, Cheshire on May 10th. It commemorates the 40th Anniversary of the Silver Jubilee of KGV. Londonbus1 Edited to add one of the other sheets from this event.

JUBILEE INTERNATIONAL STAMP EXHIBITION Royal Horticultural Halls, London October 14-29, 1912. The London-based Junior Philatelic Society held a competition to find an 'Ideal' stamp to replace the Definitive of the day, The Downey Head which was much disliked. The winning design, by TS Harrison, was printed at the show and sold as souvenirs. They cost 1d each !! They were printed by Waterlow Bros and Layton in sheets of 240 by the Printex method. Many different colours exist, some more scarce than others. They are easy to find as over 24,000 labels were printed, but prices vary. Shown below are two Imperf Blocks, one marginal showing the Jubilee line.

I wonder if the bi-colour Austrian sheet, can be considered a "Black print"?
Def: A True Black Print, can be isolated from mere private reproductions in Black, because they are printed by the same printing house utilised by the Post Office for the issued stamps"
