I wish I had not stumbled across this thread as I have drooled from the first picture to the last Damn you Mr Bus I am now officially stuck and hooked on British Philatelic Exhibitions cinderellas and sheets I have even set up a Folder to hold my growing collection of these type of items along with a spreadsheet to catalogue and document them This is what I love about stamp collecting - someone elses passion can easily become yours I look forward to being able to contribute meaningfully to this thread sometime in the near future Hang loose and keep on stamping good people

I've been hooked on the US Exhibition Cinderellas for awhile now but when I look at some of the British Exhibition items out there like this one I'm pretty sure I'm going to be expanding my collection once again. This is one of my favorites. London International Air Post Exhibition May 7-12, 1934 I was trying to find some relevant information before making this post and I came across this image (which I pilfered) from one collector's blog. I didn't realize these had been issued in 5 more additional colors. Now I want them as well. I'll have to start hunting. The collector from which I borrowed that scan from raised a good question in that the Samuel Jones company was a London based paper supplier and the images are for a London Exhibition but in the lower margin its printed "Institut De Gravure - Paris" Would that be a French printing company that did these or maybe just a French artist that designed the image? I was trying to find out some more info about Samuel Jones & Co. Ltd and found a couple more Cinderellas which I thought were neat. This is an item for sale on Delcampe. Not really sure what "Bale Packaging" refers to, maybe a form of packing large quantities of paper products? Here's a link to another item that I thought was really nice but this site is attempting to sell the rights to using the image so I didn't think I should borrow it. www.lookandlearn.com/history-images/XJ123342/Gummed-Paper-made-by-Samuel-Jones-Co-Ltd-London?img=1&search=Gummed+Paper+madeI also found a interesting discussion on the SCF which was about a postcard sent from Samuel Jones regarding the fact that his company supplied the paper for Sierra Leone's first free form self adhesive stamp in 1964. It was the map shaped one. www.stampcommunity.org/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=27848With the Air Exhibition being in 1934 and the Sierra Leone stamp in 1964, a thirty year spread, I'd really be interested in finding out the dates for when the Samuel Jones company was in business. Still looking. Rick

CREDIT/blame....it's such a fine line. Actually I have to admit a very large portion of my enjoyment/attraction and inevitable collections to these and other Cinderellas is truly due to Londonbus's postings here and on other numerous forums. So a big thank you to him, if he hadn't shared as much as he has I wouldn't have been aware of even a small portion of whats out there. Rick

Yeah, but LB likes credit better so we'll pass comfort his way. Thanks Locos and Frog........I do like a bit of credit now and then ! But you can blame me if you like. In fact you can say anything, I have just won an amazing lot of Cinderellas on eBay so nothing can dampen my mood !! Now back to those Air post labels. The Apex International Air Post Exhibition was held at the Royal Horticultural Society Hall in London between May 7th-12th. A number of very interesting items were produced including these beautiful labels. They were indeed printed at the Gravure Institute in Paris in sheets of 25 with left and right Tabs. The Blue and Red labels also exist Imperforate. A small quantity of labels were overprinted for the Zucker Rocket post [Sussex Downs, June 6th 1934] and are extremely scarce. The regular labels are also quite scarce and I do not see them often. I have a right Tab set which I will scan tomorrow and post up here. Now let's see........who else can we get hooked on Cinderellas.......... Londonbus1

I forgot to confirm that the paper was supplied by Samuel Jones...but I guess you all had that figured out by now !! Also, I forgot to say a big 'Thanks' to tomiseksj for the excellent link to Samuel Jones. Some very important info was gleaned from it.

THE APEX INTERNATIONAL AIR POST EXHIBITION, 1934. Here is the set of labels with Tab to the right advertising the paper supplier, Samuel Jones & Co. Ltd. They were printed in sheets of 5x5 so it can be assumed that there are 5 right and left Tabs to each sheet. They sold for 5/- a sheet or 1/6d for a set of 6. I have no information about the quantities produced. It really is a beautiful design. As stated in an earlier post, there exists overprints for a Rocket Post by Zucker. Also, the design was used as a Cachet for a quantity of Exhibition envelopes in black. Covers from this Exhibition are highly sought after as can be confirmed by auction prices. Just to give an example of the strength of Cinderellas and in particular Philatelic Exhibition material, I have only found a small number of these labels on offer today and all are at DOUBLE the catalogue market price !!! Edited to show the type of label on the left of sheet (and label). A second label was also produced for publicity purposes. I have no information regarding the printer/designer. Produced in sheets of 12 by Lithography, both perf [11x10] and Imperf. Outer edges are Imperforate. I have a Perforated example which I show here. These too most often sell for over the catalogue/market price. Londonbus1

Based on what I'm reading there, the link I gave that shows a postcard signed by Samuel Jones in 1964 must have been signed as "the company" rather than as the individual as by my calculations he would be well over 100 years old by then. Thanks for showing those large clear scans Mr. Bus. Excellent! In that posting you mentioned that both of the two types of Cinderellas for that show are being offered or sell for double the catalog/market price. Could you share what that catalog value is please and with the sheet being printed 5x5 that would mean that 15 of the stamps from the sheet wouldn't have any tabs attached, does that make much of a difference in their value as I would assume most would wants copies including the tab. I was also wondering if you had any contact info for Mr. Morgan's CD and if you might be able to send it to me. I've been searching for info on how to obtain the catalog but everything I've found has been outdated and the only contact I found was for Mr. Wilson. I attempted to contact him via the email supplied for purchasing the CD but it was bounced back as undeliverable.
Thanks, Rick

Rod.....not sure exactly what you were asking for clarification on. Did you mean about the outdated contact info I had mentioned for obtaining the CD. If so, the only references I have found so far were, I believe, from 2006 and 2009 which gave a contact email for a Mr. Wilson, which was the co-author of the 2006 edition of the catalog, CD's were supposed to be available through him. I attempted to use that email but the message I sent him got bounced backed as undeliverable after a couple of days. I have found a website that shows an example 'page' from the CD www.stampprinters.info/BSE.htmbut couldn't find any info on how to obtain it. Everything else I've found has only referenced the catalog but again no info on actually purchasing one. Could be that I'm also just overlooking something obvious, that's been known to happen now and again. Rick

Let me see what I can do regarding the CD Catalogue. I have contact addresses for Graham Wilson's wife too as she sells on ebay and has her own webpage. I will try to contact today or tomorrow. Rick, send me your email address via the messages. The 2010 catalogue has the set of 6 labels at £12 [$20] and £17.50 [$29] with Tab. Mostly these go today for around double that or more. The only ones I found yesterday were £5 per label [£30 a set] with Tab. As the tab is an 'extra' and the beautiful part is the design of the label, all types are desirable, in my opinion. The Tab is a bonus I guess, albeit a pricey one !! [£1 a Tab ! ] I'll get back to you on the catalogue. Londonbus1

My apologies for not being around much these last weeks. Work, family, health and the odd disaster at home took up my time and energy. But today I am inspired. Work took a back seat and the adrenalin and excitement came rushing back. An Olympic-style ebay auction took hold of me. Central Hall, Westminster, London Gummed sheets of 12 with margins all round, Harrison & Sons imprint twice in bottom margin. 6 ship and 6 plane designs, sold in sets of 6 without margins. 4 colours. Photogravure Perf 14½x14 Very scarce. Catalogue value for 1 sheet of 12 is a low £20. Rarely seen [twice by yours truly, once on display]. Occasionally seen in sets of 6 or in singles. Now look what arrived today in a sleepy English City..... Unlisted in the catalogue in this format. In a few hours of searching, phoning, emails and digging, I have found absolutely no mention or trace of these sheets. I am at a dead end and need to get to the NPS Library in London. I have written to the keeper of the books. But it may have to wait until September !! Yes, I am still shaking..........they cost me less than £60 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1950 LONDON INTERNATIONAL STAMP EXHIBITION. 6-13 May, Grosvenor House, London. A number of very desirable souvenirs were produced including the one below which was produced in the USA by John W Nicklin of New York under authority of the show organizers. Both perf [15] and Imperf, depicting St.George slaying the Dragon. The sheets were discusssed [by me] on a thread about eBay ! Below are the complete sheet set of 4 colours. Imperf set of singles. A gift from a very kind member of another forum. Another souvenir depicting St.George and the Dragon was also produced. I have not been able to find out if there was any connection or why two items for one show were produced on the same subject. Coincidence ? The sheet below is one of 5 sheets of the same design but printed on different coloured papers. One label in the sheet is printed upside down. Sold at the show for 2/6 for a set of 5 labels. Sheets were printed by lithography and rouletted. Sheet printed on pale lemon paper. A further sheet was printed by Waterlow in the Collotype process and was shown by Rod222 in an earlier post. This sheet was sold together with a sheet of Blue Interleaving paper in an Exhibition envelope for 1/-. Londonbus1 Ack: British Stamp Exhibitions, Morgan & Wilson.

BRITISH PHILATELIC EXHIBITION, 1982 6-10 October, Wembley Conference Centre, London. Sheets without gum showing the 1882 QV £5 Orange [100 years before]. Printed by Harrison & Sons in Letterpress, numbered on reverse. A number of varieties/presentation issues exist in small quantities, some are shown below. A small quantity were underprinted 'TRADE SAMPLE' This is the only copy I have seen thus far with part-missing text at the top [only]. Unlisted. The item below is also unlisted in the catalogue and is the only example I have seen. Handstamped on the reverse 'British Philatelic Exhibition, 6 sept 1982', fully one month BEFORE the show !! An error of date ? Or a pre-show publicity item ? Or something else ? 'SPECIMEN' overprint by Typography on unnumbered sheets. Presentation item on thin card in Black only. Another of those scarce items one hardly ever sees. I wonder where they all are ? Londonbus1........ Ack: British Stamp Exhibitions, Morgan & Wilson.

Pietro Annigoni's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is my favourite, so this item commemorating Stampex 1963 is one I like. A bit dinged up, unfortunately. Ryan It's my favourite portrait of the Queen too. the sheet showing the colour seperations has always been one of my favourite GB Exhibition sheets too. Just to add a bit of info. 50,000 sheets were printed in photogravure and they sold for 2/6 at the show. I would say that was not cheap for the ordinary collector !! It is still popular today and often sells for above it's market value. Pietro Annigoni opened the show on the morning of the 15th and signed a small but unknown number of copies of this sheet. A 1995 valuation of £5 was given to the sheet by Glenn Morgan for the excellent British Philatelic Exhibitions catalogue. 3 years ago a signed copy as well as the 'Multiple' SPECIMEN overprint version were on offer at eBay. I bid 10 times OVER the catalogue price for the signed sheet and 5 times for Specimen sheet and was left standing on both counts !! They sold for £86 and £79 respectively. I have never seen them anywhere since. [But I never give up hope]. Here is the single SPECIMEN sheet. Londonbus1 I have been chewing my fingers all day at the prospect of me losing another bidding war for something I thought I would never add to my British Philatelic Exhibition collection...........but I did it !! Without the war too ! It is only the second time I have seen the Multiple 'SPECIMEN' overprint and if you read the quote you will see what happened on the only other occasion I have seen one offered. I won this one for a jaw-dropping £16 !!! [$27]. I had luck and someone was smiling on me.........I'll post it when it comes. Now where's that dancing banana ? Londonbus1.........

It's arrived !! The sheet was in the most superb condition...like it had just left the printers. Amazing. The first time I have ever seen one in the flesh and only the 2nd time in all [see previous post]. Note the sans-serif overprint compared to the Serifed type on the single overprinted sheet. Well made up this morning. Now where's that dancing banana ? Londonbus1........he made it ! Albeit in Blue

I have written to the keeper of the books. But it may have to wait until September !! Yes, I am still shaking..........they cost me less than £60 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I never thought I'd see the day. Londonbus1 [/i][/quote] I have just returned from a very difficult UK trip and am glad to sit at my desk and read through the posts. I did not manage to get to visit my friend who was holding these super-looking Exhibition sheets but he did send them by post and they are now sitting in front of me. They are more beautiful than I had imagined and I will be studying them hard in the days ahead for clues of how they came about. I managed a little searching whilst in London but drew the expected blank. There is just no mention of these sheets of 18 anywhere !! So let's see what I can find out in the weeks ahead. I may have to guess !! I will be writing to De La Rue to see if they can can help with any archive info from the Harrison sale of 1997, although I understand much of it was sold off. Fingers crossed. Good to be back. Londonbus1
