BRITISH PHILATELIC EXHIBITION 1973. 31st October-3rd November, Seymour Hall, Marylebone, London. The souvenir sheet depicts a 1913 Seahorse design in Greenish Blue with no denomination. Printed by Bradbury Wilkinson in recess on ungummed paper with a numbered underprint in Blue-green Came together with an information sheet sporting the BPE logo and was printed in black. A second sheet was printed in Crimson with a vermilion numbered underprint. Only 640 copies exist. They were used for presentation purposes. This sheet is very scarce. Both the above are cut from larger sheets of 20 of which 7 plate blocks of 4 sheets exist in special collections, including one of each colour in the Royal Collection. One of my favourite Exhibition items. I was lucky to find a Crimson sheet some years ago and it is a prized possession ! Londonbus1

LONDON 1980 INTERNATIONAL STAMP EXHIBITION. Some items from this show have been shown previously. The next item is from the House of Questa, a souvenir sheet depicting BT Tower, Big Ben and Concorde. Printed in part litho. Designed by Clive Abbott and perforated on the Questa stand at the show [14]. Extra stocks of the sheet were needed urgently during the event for presentation purposes and this 2nd printing was accepted by the organizers without the text. This item is relatively scarce. A very popular show item.

1974 FESTIVAL OF STAMPS. May 3-6, Royal Festival Hall, London. You can be forgiven for thinking that the following item looks to be the same as my avatar ! In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. More on that in a later post. Below is a half sheet of labels reproduced from the 1923 International Stamp Exhibition Mercury air mail designs. Printed on ungummed, unwatermarked paper and Imperf. They were printed at the show in rotaprint-lithography.

LONDON INTERNATIONAL STAMP EXHIBITION, 1923. Royal Horticultural Halls, Victoria, London. May 14th-26th The Junior [now National] Philatelic Society held a competition to design an airmail stamp for Great Britain and the winning design, by J Bickerton Sefton, was used for labels for this Exhibition. Mistakenly assumed to be airmail essays down the years. They were printed in sheets of 240 [2 panes of 120] by De La Rue by Letterpress. They were printed in the colours of the then low value KGV definitive and had the Jubilee line around the edges. The De La Rue Imprint was in the bottom margin as were 'mock' control numbers D-23, M-23, O-23, T-23. Paper was by Roughway Mills of Kent and the watermark by Edwin Amies. Labels exist in Perf 14 and Perf 15x14 and Imperf. A Grover perforator was used. There are 3 types of watermarks. Multiple planes, Single planes and single planes inverted. A 4th watermark, Multiple planes inverted, is almost impossible to tell apart from the upright. All colours exist in all types so a complete collection is large and difficult to find. In addition, some colours are known without watermark. Imperf from watermarked sheets where the watermark was misplaced during production !! The labels sold for 1d at the Exhibition. Today they can be found for anything from 50c to $10 !! Shop around. Proof copies in Black were produced for attaching to the Menu of the Official show banquet held at the Cecil Hotel on May 17th. MORE TO COME........TOMORROW, MAY 18TH, A VERY SPECIAL DAY ! Londonbus1..... [Ack: British Philatelic Exhibitions [Morgan & Wilson], Other sources, My Pea-sized brain !]

I was thinking mine was darker than the typical, but seeing them on the same page, I think not. Here is my other margin copy. There wasn't enough difference to warrant posting both, but in case it looks interesting to anyone...

LONDON INTERNATIONAL STAMP EXHIBITION, 1923. May 18th, The King visits ! The show organizers ordered from De La Rue 2 special sheets to be presented to the King for his visit to the Exhibition on May 18th. 1 sheet in Royal Purple 1 sheet in Gold. I have no imformation on what papers the presentation sheets were to be printed on. It was some time after the Exhibition ended that a few copies of these two special colours were found on the open market. So it can be assumed that more than one sheet of each was printed. There seems to be no record of this. British Philatelic Exhibitions by Morgan and Wilson lists the following as seen: Royal Purple with Multiple planes watermark on Chalk surfaced paper, Imperf and ungummed. Gold with no watermark on Chalk surfaced paper, Imperf and with gum. Gold with single plane watermark, Imperf and with gum. These are my scans and the explanation and story will follow....... It may be hard to tell from my scans but the lower Gold copy has less metallic content than the upper example and in a certain light could be mistaken for a [golden] brown. The lower example is the no watermark type and [again] it can be assumed that any other copies of this type are of similar appearance. You can be forgiven for thinking that while I have listed 3 examples of these special printings, why have I shown an extra one ?! In January 2012 a member of another forum, from Croatia, posted that he had purchased some Cinderellas and offered us to view them leaving a link. When I saw what I saw, my jaw dropped. I had not previously seen these special printings nor heard of any for sale. They were just words in a book. And yet I thought I saw them at this link. To cut a long story short [and it was long], we exchanged emails and forum posts and when I was convinced it was the Gold and Royal Purple varieties, I made a deal to buy them. They arrived by registered mail and another surprise was in store. There were two purple copies and the collector from Croatia gave me a description but I believed it was just a double although I was hoping for a surprise. I got it ! The bottom copy of the scans is a Royal Purple example on Chalk surfaced paper [?], No watermark and with gum. It is therefore a new discovery and will be in any future copies of British Phialtelic Exhibitions. You may notice a tiny mark opn the top edge towards the left corner. It may well be the result of a 'chalky' test made long ago. I just do not understand how it has not been recorded and handed down.......but then again, perhaps I can ! Londonbus1 [/i]

THE LONDON INTERNATIONAL STAMP EXHIBITION, 1923. PART 3. A few other items exist for this show, most are connected with the labels covered in the first two posts. Trial printings in sheetlets of 4 exist in 5 of the colours for the 'airmail' labels and sheets of watermarked paper with both Multiple and single planes inscribed Roughway Mills are also listed. I have never seen either item. In addition, special printings of other competition designs were issued on card for publicity purposes. Later, some of these were reproduced as a fantasy series, probably by Gerald King. I will show some of these elsewhere as they are not show connected. A second set of labels, also with an 'air' theme were produced for this show. Printed in Lithography, perf 11x12, they show a plane over the London skyline. I have no information about the printer. The Magenta label was overprinted for propaganda purposes in Perth, Western Australia in 1930 as a protest at the airmail postage cost ! Londonbus1

Have we seen this one here yet? Don't think so. I don't find much on it around the interwebz, but I know I'll hear all about it here. I like the Mulready look to it. Sorry about the perfs and centering. Probably would have passed on it, if I had ever seen one before. edited to add an offering to the G@@glemonster: London Philatelic Exhibition 191 Piccadilly 22 July 5 August 1897

With respect, If you had added the text, "London Philatelic Exhibition 1897" in your post, then one day it would appear on the interwebz. As it stands it will remain lost. We all need to be cognisant that text strings will assist searches. We all fail each other, when we post an image, with lack of information. That's a lovely cinderella. Not seen before.

Here's a souvenir sheet from Stampex 1961, the British National Stamp Exhibition, showing various draft designs for a Finnish Europa issue as well as the eventual successful design. Why Finland? Why not? As can be seen, there is a serial number printed with firm resolve on the back of the sheet. Ryan

The 1934 Air Post Exhibition has been covered previously but I managed to find a missing item that had eluded me. Rod showed a strip from one of his pages in an earlier post. Here is the full Imperf sheet of 12 which I was lucky enough to find in immaculate condition.
No less interesting and [apart from some colour aging] also in super condition is this show Glassine envelope complete with logo. It came together with an item I already had but could not resist, the Institut de Gravure 'Tower bridge' set but in MNH blocks of 6 !!!!
Once I had drooled over these blocks long enough, I will be breaking them up for disposal !!
