What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Good morning Sherlocks! I slept in again - sorry ‘bout that Chief! So here is your answer;
Rene renden wrote; CANADA C5 (Scott/Unitrade) "Daedalus in Flight" Jun 1 1935 issue Perf 12
In Greek mythology, Daedalus was a skillful architect and craftsman, seen as a symbol of wisdom, knowledge, and power. Among his most famous creations are the wooden cow for Pasiphaë, the Labyrinth for King Minos of Crete which imprisoned the Minotaur, and the wings that he and his son Icarus used to escape Crete.
Correct answers were supplied by; stanley64 mberry hrdoktorx salentin renden rednaxela
and enjoy that beach vacation, hdm1950 .
FYI - The overwhelming response to yesterday’s mystery stamp was to admire its beauty. I wish this copy were mine, but it actually is a pic from Colnect which I often use when I don’t own a copy. stanley64 Added that: the stamp you have shared is a known variety, i.e. 'moulting feather flaw' which can be clearly seen in the scratches across left wing of Icarus. (Scott n.º C5ii or Stanley Gibbons n.º 355b)
There was also a bit of disagreement about whether the stamp depicted Daedalus or Icarus. The Colnect data for the stamp used has conflicting names;
In any case, well done everyone especially those who caught the plate flaw! Here is your trophy hat - wear it proudly!

Attention please Daily Mystery Stamp fans;
The latest IOS update is creating havoc with my ability to do text editing. Cut and paste, insert and other simple functions are highly erratic so creating the posts have taken 2 or 3 times as long to complete. This is cutting into the time I set aside to do Colnect volunteer work, too.
I’m sure Apple will release further updates to correct many of these glitches, but in the meantime I am reducing the frequency to three times a week; Monday, Wednesday, and then Friday will start the weekend challenge. If this schedule works out adequately I may keep it. Prize drawings will now be monthly.
Sorry ‘bout that, Chief!

Congratulations to our talented Sherlock’s who correctly identified the Weekend Challenge mystery stamp!
rednaxela wrote: It is a stamp from the former Ottoman Empire (Turkey) from 1865, depicting a star and a crescent as a symbol of the Ottoman Empire. It is the 2 piastre stamp in blue in the first overprint variant of this issue and thus Michel # 8 and Scott # 11.
The overprint reads in Turkish with Arabic characters as "Postai devleti Osmaniye", i.e. "Post of the Ottoman Empire" with an indication of the respective denomination.
The stamp series with this design is known as the Duloz issue. The background to this is that the Ottoman Empire commissioned the printing of these stamps to France (the Poitevin company in Paris printed them initially). A Mr. Pierre Edelestan Stanislas Dulos [his real name, not Duloz!] engraved the printing plate based on a design that had come from the Ottoman Ministry of Finance. Mr. Dulos was a highly skilled technical French engraver and inventor of a chemical process for the production of relief engraving plates and engraved many French revenue stamps.

WOW! Impressive response to the Wednesday mystery stamp challenge! The answers contained a gold mine of information about this historic issue. Well done. Sherlock’s! rednaxela wrote; representation of the sun, but with a slightly different drawing of the face, bears the catalog number 4. The series of 4 stamps in total is called "Diligencia(s)". This has the following background: Uruguay's first stamps were not issued by the state, but by private companies (and only for internal use within Uruguay). They were therefore not recognized by the UPU. Correspondence in the interior was effected by means of the diligencias, which were stagecoaches, charged not only with the forwarding of correspondence but also travelers and their baggage. These "Diligencias" (stagecoach stamp) were issued by the stagecoach companies.stanley64 also added more about the pictured copy - To be more precise, the stamp you have shown is a 60c. dark blue, Uruguay issue - 1856 (01 Oct), "El Sol de Mayo". Despite its lack of 4 perfect margins, this copy, from position 24 on the sheet of 35 based on the plating efforts of Mr. E. J. Our clever team of Sherlocks solved the weekend mystery stamp challenge with gusto and alacrity. The answers poured in within a few hours - impressive! The first answer was sent in by a new member, franoise , who succinctly wrote; Official stamp from Afghanistan,Michel # 1. Hugh, hdm1950 , added; It as in use till 1927 with various papers and shades.
rednaxela noted; this is a (the first) official stamp of Afghanistan, issued in 1909, depicting the coat of arms of Afghanistan. There are two color variants of this issue, the one in carmine and the one (the one in question here) in red. It has the catalog numbers Michel # D1a and Scott # O1.Gene, djcmh , provided this link to the Colnect data. BTW - a copy is listed for sale there. colnect.com/en/stamps/list/variant/652075
