www.germanstamps.net/Edit - I tried to add the link, but it kept bouncing me back here to the forum. Admin or mod - am I making an error somehow? Is it because I am on my iPad? I get the same thing when I click on the link on PostmasterGS signature. Thanks for your help. It loads for me in like 3 seconds; link is working good. And once again PostmasterGS, "What an amazing site"!

Thanks for the kind words, all!
I've been working on trying to speed the site up. I discovered that the YouTube videos I had linked on the front page were really slowing down the page load, so I moved those to other pages. It's a little better, but at a certain point, it's an image-heavy site, and there's not a lot I can do other than dropping image quality, which I'm not inclined to do.

Today I would like to present a specialty from 1997. It is the commemorative stamp " 200th birthday of Heinrich Heine". Michel #1962, issued on November 6, 1997. The stamp itself has no special feature, but the sheet. The stamp was printed in sheets of 10 stamps. The original version has a rune mark at the top left and bottom right of the sheet. Since rune marks have similarities with Nazi symbols, the issue was stopped on 18 November 1997 and replaced by a sheet without rune marks. All collectors with subscriptions received a letter from Deutsche Post AG with the official announcement as well as the announcement of a replacement for sheet collectors. Letter from BMPT - Bonn, November 18, 1997Translation of red box:To prevent the „Heine“ commemorative stamp from being dragged into a discussion about Nazi symbols, the Federal Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Dr. Wolfgang Bötsch, has stopped issuing the sheets of these stamps and asked Deutsche Post AG to stop selling them from today. The stamps will now be printed without the symbol. Letter from Deutsche Post AG. December 5, 1997 Translation of red box:All customers receive sheets from the new edition. In view of the political implications of the criticism of the original design, we ask for your understanding that the Federal Post Ministry has stopped issuing the stamp of the first edition. You will understand that we may no longer supply sheets of the first edition.New edition without rune:(picture from ebay - not mine) Nevertheless, there were of course some sheets in circulation that had been sold between November 6 and November 18. (Letter I received yesterday in my 12,5 kg wonderbox.) correct postage of 13 DM for an insured letter (1.000 DM) in January 1998. Cara

Since the posting of the German chess stamp with matrixcode triggered some discussion, here are the other new 2021 issues with this feature, including a stamp (top left) issued just to introduce the concept of the German stamps "going digital".

Today I received the new German issues for the second quarter of 2021, and only two of the stamps, out of a dozen or so, carry the matrix code launched to great fanfare at the beginning of the year. I wonder if that means it was a short-lived experiment or if this is a way to introduce a new mail tracking rate?

I appreciate renden (Rene) has posted these previously, but I'll add just one picture with a few words as a contribution to his far more informative post. Produced in German and issued I believe in 1903 for use in Prussia, apparently as part of a process to compute the amount of postage due on Official Mail - "each set being used for twelve months in order to assess the amount of revenue owed to the imperial postal service for Government mail carried" (presumably within Prussia). I couldn't see these listed in my old SG catalogue - my info comes from Mackay's 'Philatelic Terms Illustrated (issued by SG - p. 34). These few seem remarkably clean for their age.

Hello stamp friends. I hope you are all well. One of the things I love about our hobby is how we can learn about fascinating people and events that otherwise would be unknown to us. One such story is that of Captain von Kopenick (Wilhelm Voigt), In 1906 this petty thief became a folk hero when he dressed up as a German Army officer, commandeered some soldiers, arrested the mayor of the town of Kopenick and had the town pay a fine to release the mayor from arrest! Eventually arrested, he is convicted and sentenced to prison. Eventually pardoned by the Kaiser he moved to Luxembourg, where he died in 1922. Luxembourg issued a stamp this year to commemorate the centennial of his death. I posted that in the Luxembourg stamps thread. Germany had previously issued one in 2006 to mark the centennial of his deception. Scott 2392 issued September 9, 2006. I would be interested in seeing one on a postally-used cover. Have a pleasant week everyone.

Again, part of my ongoing swap with Roland ( cara ), these higher value items from the 1940s and 50s are welcome additions to my collection and will fill some empty spots. I am especially fond of the higher values from the building definitives from the late 40s and 50s.

head on block again, this time with a Berlin postmark for RIXDORF which is, apparently, 'a rural oasis in the heart of Berlin, and the prettiest secret village you can imagine, with historic connections to the Knights Templar (makes no mention of Tom Hanks)'. This 50 PFENNIGE (with the final E) value looks to be possibly the 'grey' from the 1875 to 1879 definitive issues - possibly SG 36a - slightly later issues drop the final E. The dated post mark shows 76 (1876), and am assuming it's showing 14th June - but the digits at the base of the cancel leave some room for doubt as to their purpose. Don't think this colour is the olive or the blackish grey, but not easy to be certain with old issues. I've taken photos against both black and pale backgrounds - it might help, on the other hand might make for more confusion, as to colour. All, and any comments, corrections gratefully received and thanks for looking.

paul1The cancellation looks original (10-11 represents the time of day) This stamp has 2 numbers in Michel 36 and 37. Due to the cancellation date, only 36 remain in two color variants: a - gelgbrau (15 E used) b - dunkelgrau (450 Euro used) I have not translated the names of the colors because it is inconclusive with the names in the other catalogs - it remains for you to equate them with those in SG or Scott. I can only quote what Juergen Kraft recommends in the "stampsx.com" website: "...because it is often confused, here is an actual 36b. There are 36a that appear darker than lighter 36b. The difference is the soot admixture in the 36b. Under the magnifying glass, these become visible as small black splashes of color. The effect can also be seen well under UV-366nm as it is clearly more sooty." I hope that the German translation (with google) will help you to identify it.

many thanks gstamps for your very helpful information - much appreciated. It seems a remarkable coincidence that both Michel and SG should categorize this denomination with what appears to be an almost identical main No., and the expression "because it is often confused" - sounds like the understatement of the year;-). The 'gelgbrau' more or less translates as - 'yellow-brown' - and dunkelgrau as simply dark grey.
I will investigate further based on your helpful advice - I do in fact have an u.v. torch with what I think is a 390 - 400nm range (for uranium glass) - which may well help. These colour variations are a real problem at times, and as we've said before how we see colour, as individuals, is open to some debate. thanks again.

the idea was to use this one solely for the son postmark calendar, and I could do that without worrying much about the origin of the stamp, but then curiosity took hold - an understatement to say this has had a hard life, being cut and faded. I was never going to collect Germany, but as usual it's the classics that appeal, though this one has possibly defeated me, and my comments may well be inaccurate. The stamp reads 'DEUTSCH REICH POST' with a value that looks like 1/3 GROSCHEN (30 groschen = 1 thaler), and the postal origin is LEIPZIG with cancellation of 24th November 1872 on a centre of possibly the eagle with large shield. This might be SG 17 - yellow-green from 1872-73, and might this have originated in the Alsace & Lorraine region? thanks for looking.

this is reminiscent of a 'bantam', but am assuming it's not a valid postage stamp in view of the absence of the word Post. Sorry, no idea as to age or meaning of the Roman IV, so grateful if anyone is able to add some information - possibly a fiscal issue or postage due, or perhaps a receipt stamp - value is 30 pfennig? thanks.

There were others found doing my Google search. The ones in the link are not an exact match as they are a different value but it was a clear image of how the stamps were used.

German revenue? All I can find out is the first word "Briefverkehr" = Correspondence, google translate won't give anything for "Hammonia" or "Chemnitz" so any help as to what it is, when, why or anything at all would be helpful.
