This finally arrived today. Not good too use a thin biodegradable plastic to ship it surface across the pond! Canada Post had to re-wrap it in a very sturdy plastic bag. At least it wasn't damaged, or lost without its wrapper! It is a thick book. Too bad there isn't a universal numbering system for all stamps! Michel has much clearer images and explanations, so I should be able to figure out all the differences with the Germania series.

Just received these in the mail. Wow! THICK catalogues brimming with information. How could I have tried to collect France stamps without these? Had to get a French/English dictionary too. Photo from the eBay listing.

it's more like..."What's not in your wallet, but in your book shelf"
I started with pestering people on websites --->>>Scott 2017 digital
and in the past couple of weeks I have acquired/purchased
Stanley Gibbons, Great Britain, Queen Victoria Vol 1 (1970)
Scotts combined 1949 Standard Postage & Stamp Catalogue
Encyclopedia of Philately, 1946 Standrd Postage and Stamp Catalogue - The Nations of Europe, Africa and Asia and their Colonies
and several PDF references printed out and now in binders
and the quest continues...i know not where or whence, but I now constantly peruse E-Bay and various bookl sellers for anything of possible interest...
and since my collecting stops ~ 1960's there's seems to be a wealth of reference materail available!

I'm sitting in my hotel in Harrisonburg Virginia (here on a little vacay) and couldn't resist telling you of todays purchase of a 1959 edition of the Dietz Confederate catalogue and handbook. I know I've got the 1986 edition (shown earlier on these pages) but when I saw this in an antique store I couldn't resist! Sadly I don't seem to be able to upload a picture from my phone! The irony of course is that I believe they've just released a new updated version. I seem to be going backward.

Haha, funny jamesw! However I will say you are not going backwards - just going back to the roots. I often find that the really old catalogs included some details that is no longer included in recent catalogs, some of the secrets of the old-time philatelists are getting lost along the way - unless guys like yourself keep the work and results of those "old studies" alive. Well done!

zipper - Wow - both Maury AND Yvert! That's awesome, congratulations I only have the Maury (2016), but would really like to obtain the Yvert specialized for the classics as well - some nice day.

Just got back from my trip south. A great vacation, but always good to get back home. For posterity, here's the cover of the 1959 Dietz. And blaamand, the only difference I can see between this and the 1986 version, at a quick glance, is that many of the illustrations in the 1959 version seem a bit clearer. Could be they had to scan from the old book for the new one and lost some clarity. Also picked up this 2017 Siegel catalogue of civil war and Confederate covers. Should make for great reference (of covers I will never be able to afford!) There's no place like home...click...there's no place like home...click...there's no place like home...click...

I saved a lot of money on postage as a Cousin of a friend visiting Israel posted this to me from Tel Aviv. It was free postage within the USA so it only cost me the purchase price. I was lucky. Most literature is out of my budget range due to postal charges. Sidney Rochlin completed his works in 1990 and gave the sole Publishing rights to the JNF Office in New York . The Handbook was published in 1991, celebrating the 90th Anniversary of the Jewish National Fund. In 2016, with the catalogue out of print, the JNF Office passed on the rights to the Education Fund of the Society of Israel Philatelists (SIP) and in 2017, an updated version was produced. Colour images replaced the Black & white in many cases; additional labels from affiliates were added and prices were updated. The latter was not too successful in my opinion but that is a minor detail for what is an excellent book.

I was digging through some boxes in a closet today and came across my 1975 copy of United States Stamps & Stories that my mom bought me at the post office when I was 10. I hadn’t seen it in about 20 years and thought that it was lost forever.

I received this in the mail today, just 3 days after ordering it on eBay. Not too bad for $12 shipped! As most of my collections end around 1990 and none go past 2000, with the exception of the British Virgin Islands, I have no need for current specialty catalogs. I would rather invest the price difference in stamps. Besides, I do have a complete 2018 set of Scott Catalogs that my daughter got me for Christmas.

Books occupy "space" if they are not read or consulted on a occasional basis - have also lots of them and rarely consult them (Stamp books I am talking about) - but when you need them......great !!

Nice topic/thread! I have a lot of auction catalogues, some are nearly fifty years old, oh to go back in time and place some bids for the holes in my albums! Also I have a few books from mainly US authors regarding classic US stamps, some books devoted to a single stamp or set. I also have a few Billig books from the 1950s? a bit dusty but nice varied topics, I see them a lot on ebay starting five dollars then I bid and suddenly they're up to $45 plus so I haven't added many volumes recently Jay

Mine came in a bio-degradable flimsy bag, I'm lucky it made it to me. Cheapest way to send something surface! eBay be gone! Lucky for you, coastwatcher, it was 'local'! I'm glad I am home too. Went for a short drive this aft. I don't think I should have. I'll leave the car driving for a while whilst I heal. Just short walks to the post office & grocery will be it for a couple weeks.

Yesterday at a social event, I happened to see a philatelic friend I've known for many years. He has been an inspiration philatelically, as his experience, depth, and writing skills are unmatched by anyone I know! My friend was kind enough to autograph for me his just-published book: Russia in Finland The Story of Russian Stamps and Postal Stationery Used in Finland, 1899-1918 by Jon Iverson, Morten Nårstad, and Roger P. Quimby FRPSL
If anyone would be interested and cannot find this online in the philatelic market in the near future (release is imminent, I was told) please email me and I would be happy to find out when production would be available for sale. Meantime its 204-pages, colorfully illustrated and thoroughly discussed, are further educating me in the fascinating field of Finnish philately ( FFFP!) isbn 978-0-578-47338-3suggested price US $40.00 (well worth the price!) Pick up your copy soon! Kindly yours, -J.

stainlessb, That's a good Lundy catalogue produced by a real locals fanatic !! I have seen some of his displays and his dealer tables at our Cinderella Stamp Club meetings. Nice guy too. I have just ordered the Sixth Edition which comes out in June. I don't collect Lundy but may do again one day, who knows !

I downloaded the PDF's for the Connoisseur Machin guide. Each specialty catalog groups stamps different so it is sort of a knowledge check to understand. For example, this book seems to focus by printer first. www.connoisseurcatalogue.net/

Within the last week, I received these two, “The Stamp Atlas” by Raife Wellsted, Stuart Rossiter and John Flower and “Where in the World? An Atlas for Stamp Collectors” by Kenneth A. Wood. I recently began collecting a stamp from every country using the free, downloadable album which is provided by the Smithsonian National Postal Museum and I got these books to help me with it. If anyone is looking for a stamp atlas, I would recommend “The Stamp Atlas” over “Where in the World?” It is far more comprehensive, has more numerous and more detailed maps, and is illustrated with b&w and color photos as well as color images of stamps. I only gave about $5 shipped for “Where in the World” from a used bookseller on eBay and seriously doubt that it’s worth what I paid for it. Still, it will find a home in my philatelic library.
