I won't post a scan, but today I received the full 2 volume set of Maury Ceres & Dalay (2009 NOS) as the Volume 2 which I previously purchased it not all that helpful, and thus I now have two copies of that...
and I am almost in need of another shelf for catalogues. When I returned to the hobby/obsession I was quite pleased I had an older Scott and had found some online sites (which is how I stumbled upon TSF).... my how things have changed in only 8 months

I got this in the mail today from angore...thanks Al. Although not philatelic in nature, I also received a book the other day that should be of interest to collectors of colonial African stamps. It covers the convoluted history of the European power grab in Africa during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Although I’ve only read about 50-60 pages so far, I can already recommend it to anyone interested in this area.

I've been reading old Soviet philatelic journals. This one from 1967 has an article about a woman that did her academic degree in philately. She studied economics, and her degree thesis was about the current state of stamp shops (in USSR), challenges, lack of standardization and regulation in the field etc. That's neat! I wonder if there are any other academic works on philately. I think I chose a wrong academic pathway...

My wife and I returned from a week in the British Virgin Islands last night and I found this, among other things, waiting for me. It’s fairly comprehensive and contains many maps but, if you are looking for a good stamp atlas, it might be best to look elsewhere as its diminutive size (roughly 4” X 6”) makes it hard to read.

Congratulations stainlessb with your 2019 COB catalog - neat ! That's really handy indeed. Note - you could do that before you received the hardcopy as well, with only the pdf - just open the pdf twice - and you can have 2 pages visible at the same time. Or even 3 or 4, depending on your screen size / number of screens and if your eyes are ready for it!

blaamand yes, true, but there's something about holding a book. My wife bought me a very nice Kindle tablet, but I seldom use it.... I could also load the PDF on there and have yet another copy!

What I collect: Worldwide Stamps 1840-1930

First of all, I want to offer a long belated thanks to Gavin ( feebletodix ) who gave me the first book pictured below L'Âge d'Or de la Carte Postale (The Golden Age of the Post Card) during my visit to Oxford on Easter Sunday for the auction. The book on the right is one that is titled La Poste, and which was apparently sold at the Museum of the French Postal Service. I acquired this book some months ago at the street market here in Aix. Today, as I am starting to prepare for the move to England in October, I decided that I needed to find a home here in France for these beautiful books, so I gave them to Pascal, my dealer friend at the Aix market, and he seemed genuinely pleased to get them. As he stocks and sells lots of post cards, it seemed like he would be able to make especially good use of the book from Gavin. After some additional discussion, and the purchase of a couple of classic stamps from France for my collection, Pascal decided to make a gift in return, and he gave me his Yvert & Tellier 2017 Catalogue of the Stamps of France, Volume 1, also shown below. I was very pleased to receive this, as I think that I will be able to make very good use of it going forward. What was intended to be a gift effectively turned into a trade for me, but I am very happy with the result and just wanted to share with all of you. And thanks again to Gavin, as without his kindness to me in the first place, which inspired me to pass along his book to Pascal, I suspect that things would have worked out a bit differently.

You were welcome to the book, it needed repatriation and I am glad you were able to get something (cough, err useful ) in exchange.

Well, I finally found a book that lists all the post offices in Germany. My copy is from 1940. It is in German, which I can't read, but it does have the post offices names just like the cancellation, so I am good. LOL. Come to find out, these books are really expensive, at least to me they are. Most copies sells for $80-125, but I got lucky and found one for $65 shipping included. I didn't realize there were that many post offices in Germany, they must be 8-10,000! Finding them all will be impossible. I saw a post on another site where a man has over 2000, and he didn't realize there were this many. I have covered the nazi emblem on the cover so as not offend anyone reading this. Yes, that is a Boy Scout Stamp Collecting Merit badge! I have a few stock books full of nice cancellations, but I don't think I am anywhere near the 2000 range even, so we will see how many I can find now.

I didn't realize there were that many post offices in Germany, they must be 8-10,000! With the date on the catalogue and its description of "post offices ... in the German Empire", you will probably have a listing of all of the Austrian & Czech post offices, perhaps even the Polish (General Gouvernement) offices as well. I have a couple of the later editions, one for West (or was it already unified? have to dig through my bookcase) and one for East Germany, but I've never seen a WWII-era copy. I bet the Kaiser Wilhelm-era books would be fascinating as well, including listings for the Baltics. Gumbinnen! (ha ha - my favourite old exonym formerly seen on German stamps) Ryan
