What I collect: Worldwide - Stamps and Postmarks - not enough time...

Post by blaamand on Aug 23, 2018 8:19:52 GMT
Thanks doug630. I do have the 2016 Maury with some info, however not too extensive on the postmarks. Luckily there are very most generous folks in here, so I got the 2009 Ceres/Dallay/Maury yesterday. I was surprised how much more details it was in there than in the 2016 Maury. Massive thanks to Nelson @falshung for helping. This forum is extraordinary in all respects

Just realized I haven't posted any books for almost a year. I've picked up a few, but here are the latest acquisitions to my library. On Track by Susan McLeod O'Reilly (1992 National Postal Museum) And an artifact of the Canadian Post Office Department, a 1940 Postal Information booklet

After being instructed to make a last-minute online holiday purchase for my son-in-law, I found that I hadn't yet met the threshold to qualify for free delivery. What better excuse to add another item to my small, philatelic library? There weren't many titles to choose from but a copy of Dr. James Mackay's "The Complete Guide to Stamps & Stamp Collecting" is now sitting on my desk! (The book was too large for my scanner's platen so I borrowed this image from the vendor)

My Brother-in-Law and I have never really got on. Pleasantries are exchanged and then we go our separate ways during my UK trips. Christmas 2018 was no different. But it was also no different in another, strangely odd way. He would on occasion give me a small gift, wrapped up for Christmas. Last Saturday I once again received a small gift. On every occasion each gift has been carefully purchased and always appreciated. Sometimes they are connected to stamps. 2018 was one of those occasions. Today I spent a little time reading some 40 pages of Simon Garfield's 'The Error World--A Memoir of Obsession and Desire'. Having read only a fifth of the book I can already highly recommend this 'book about himself' to every Stampaholic ! Witty, True, Frightening and thought-provoking, Garfield writes about his love of another woman and his obsession with Stamps (mainly errors) in such a way that will have you in fits of laughter. Some (non-collectors) might say it just takes away the seriousness of the events. That may be true. But an obsesssive Stamp Collector would understand. So I guess most of our TSF members might too !! "Little do wives know how much men spend on their hobbies. But my wife is about to find out". The first line of the book about the visit to a marriage Guidance counselor. Garfield even took in his most valuable Stamp album and then says of the Counselor, "She was bored within 30 seconds" !! I think I laughed more today during those 40 pages than I have for the rest of the year put together. A non-collector most likely would not have thought it funny. So a great read for 'Stamp Collectors only" ? Why not.

My dad gave me a set of these (2 volumes). Are these considered a major authority on Philippine stamps? Dr. Ngo Tiong Tak who is the editor is also on many groups & committees related to Philippine philately. This would be considered as THE specialized catalog of the area. Not that easy to find Also Philippine Postal Catalogue Republic Period 1946-1990 by A. Luspo is another excellent one with lots of details on each issue Postal Stationery of the Philippines United States Administration 1898-1946 (1983 by the USPS)

Maybe this should have been my 1000th post, in honour of my late grand-father, whose stamp collection forms the foundation of mine. As I showed in thestampforum.boards.net/post/68004/thread, I still use the catalog I found in his office when helping to put his affairs in order after his passing. It's the world-wide Yvert & Tellier - Champion catalog from 1938: Here's the frontispice page: And a page taken at random: At the time of course, it was still possible to have all of the world's stamps in a single catalog (though it is still hefty at 1300+ pages), but this catalog is very good in its illustrations of overprints (and almost always provides translations and explanations of the abbreviations used in them), watermarks and stamp spacings, when applicable. It is also useful that Yvert&Tellier has not changed its numbering scheme since back then 80 years ago (some varieties have been discovered and added in modern editions, of course, but the basic numbers have remained). At some point I will shell out the 80-or-so Euros necessary to get a copy of the current 1840-1940 Classics YT catalog, but this one still fits my needs for most purposes.

I received two books in the mail today that anyone interested in Rhodesian stamps or postal history should endeavor to obtain. The first is “Rhodesia: A Postal History - Its Stamps, Posts & Telegraphs” by Robert C. Smith. It was published in Salisbury, Rhodesia in 1967 by Mardon Printers (Private) Limited. The second, again by Robert C. Smith, is entitled “Supplement to Rhodesia: A Postal History- Its Stamps, Posts & Telegraphs.” It was published in Salisbury by Mardon. No date is given, but I would assume it to be around 1971 as all of the stamps for 1970 are included.

A recent addition courtesy of Uncle Bill's Giveaway -- the 1937 softcover edition of the U.S. Post Office Department's A description of United States Postage Stamps covering stamps issued by the USPOD from July 1, 1847 to December 31, 1936. It was one of the publications displayed in the Philatelic Truck during its tour.

What I am using at the moment, with several MIA catalogs and books, Yvert, Michel, Canadian specialized, and etc., that may still be boxed up from moving into a much smaller place several years ago. Otto Hornung's Stamp Collecting is the best introduction to the hobby I have ever read, and has a table in the back to determine the true value of damaged stamps, which when working with high value fillers I have found to be a lifesaver. My old Scott US Specialized and Classic catalogues both are filled with notes and serve their purpose well, the newer Scott catalogues are too heavy with the slick pages and are ok for a table reference but lugging them to a stamp show doesn't work out for me. The Minkus catalogs are invaluable at making comparisons, checking dates for EKU's, and provide extra insight into issues and varieties that Scott misses, plus they get me past 1940 on my WW material. The World Stamp Almanac comes in handy and is fun to just sit down and read, I wore out my first copy and this is it's replacement. The Overrun Countries Poland by Lichtman helps with all my reverse prints in this issue, along with plate varieties which I collect. Not pictured because it is in the mail but should arrive this week is a copy of Encyclopedia of plate varieties on US Bureau printed postage stamps by Loran Cloudy French, which should help with organizing my plate varieties I have accumulated from flyspecking over the years, especially with my 720's, and hopefully leading to finding more as I'll have a better idea of what to look for. I can't figure out how to download my picture here, so you will have to employ your imagination.

I can't figure out how to download my picture here, so you will have to employ your imagination. Have a look at this post in our FAQ section - it explains the three different ways you can choose to add an image to your posts on this forum. I'm a flyspecking fan too, and already have my own copy of the encyclopedia by French which you mention. I've stated elsewhere that I'm disappointed with the lack of such info for US stamps - the Canadian Unitrade catalogue has lots of listings for plate varieties, and German collectors support complete catalogues with nothing but plate varieties (I have some for Austria as well, and even some for Bohemia & Moravia). But other than the book by French and a small handbook for plate varieties on the Overrun Countries issue, I've never found much at all for US stamps. Too bad, it's great fun to snoop through the piles of common stamps I have in search of listed varieties. Oh well! If / when you do get picture uploads figured out, I would be very interested in seeing the stamp damage value chart in your book by Otto Hornung. I've tried my own hand at such stuff before, with varying discounts for creases, tears, short teeth, missing corners, etc. But I'd like to see something from somebody who is actually worth publishing, not just a dummy like me making up his own stuff! haha Ryan

This came in the mail this morning. If you love the 1898 Trans-Mississippi issues as much as I do, you need this book. It is profusely illustrated and very comprehensive. It’s also cheap compared to most philatelic literature. I picked up this copy on Abebooks for $5.04 postage paid.
