I purchased this copy of Mellone's Planty Photo Encyclopedia of Cacheted First Day Covers, Volume VIII because of my growing collection of the U.S.' first China Clipper stamp (Scott C20).

I'm amazed at the specialization of these books. This is my one and only (so far); it has been quite helpful in untangling all the various Cordobas and Balboas:

What I have found to be my favorite part of this thread is the fact that I learn of Stamp Catalogs that I didn't even know existed. I learned from "tomiseksj" what Mallone's is. This is good for me since we collect First Day Covers. I have seen several other books that I have now added to my want list, or better known as "what I will buy the next day I work overtime list". LOL. Thanks everyone for sharing you libraries so the rest of us can learn more about the books that are available to us. Mike.

Steve does things every day that benefit all of us on TSF. Seeing these latest posts also reminds me that I have neglected to post an image of the cover of a very nice book that my wife gave me for Christmas: Every Stamp Tells a Story. Sounds a bit like a thread that madbaker started a few months back!

Yes he does Chris, I have learned so much since being on TSF in the last few months. I actually look forward to reading what people wrote today, every morning at 4:30 - 5am, before work. I usually read the recent posts or threads from the top bar, just to see what interests me today. This thread has me going back and reading old posts so that I can see what other reference books are out there. I live in Savannah, Ga and we don't have anything for stamps here worth speaking of. I get all my stuff online, so this site is a great help to me. I thank everyone for their help and information i have received here. I have been concentrated on my Ohio tax stamps lately just before I bought 20,000+ of them and it takes time to get through that many. LOL. Hopefully I will be back to my postage stamps soon. Steve has helped me probably more than anyone and even got me buying new stuff. He is always quick to look things up that people ask about, answer questions, or offer his opinion to anyone in need. I have learned this in just a few short months. I had actually bought some Ohio Tax Stamps from him the middle of last year before I even knew about TSF. It is a pleasure to know him as it is you and all the others who regularly post new stuff on here every day. I only wish I had found this site years ago.
Semper Fi! Mike.

Three more additions arrived today via media mail from Altoona, Pennsylvania (I took advantage of a recent sale by Subway Stamp Shop). They are still cocooned in their shrink wrap while I try to decide which to open first.

A few years ago, I was shocked when I realized that in the 50 years since I started collecting stamps that I had read only one—yes, one—book about stamps. That was a beginner’s guide that I read when I started out in the hobby.
And the only stamps books in my large home library (about 3600 volumes) were just two stamp catalogs.
I don’t know why I hadn’t read more about stamps. It seems I was interested only in filling spaces in an album and not learning more about the stamps and postal history.
I started remedying that in 2015, when I read Encyclopedia of United States Stamps and Stamp Collecting, edited by Rodney A. Juell and Steven J. Reed. It’s a fascinating book.
After reading that book, I started almost voraciously reading about stamps and postal history, and in the process, appreciating stamps and covers all the more and getting even more out of the hobby as I increased my knowledge.
Since reading that encyclopedia, I read 28 stamp books, and there are a few more that I’m still working through. I now have 39 physical books and many electronic books about stamps.

I have five catalogs... - 2016 Unitrade Canada (BNA)
- 2017 Prifix Michel Luxembourg
- 1st Edition Stanley Gibbons Denmark and Norway (also including Faroe Islands, Greenland and Iceland)
- 1st Edition Stanley Gibbons Belgium and Luxembourg
- Faroe Islands Stamps and Postal History (DAKA GF10 2017 Edition)
As far as other books on philately, I can't think of any off hand that I ever had. I did have around 750 or so other books, but I donated most of them to the "Friends of the Brighton Public Library" prior to my last move. Their numbers are increasing again though!

Lately, I've been purchasing more books than I have time to read. There are so many books with so much detailed information, often widely scattered across time and space. I think there is a lot of opportunity for current collectors who have the interest to update and condense much of the information into newer volumes. For example, one of my goals/ideas, for the future, is to extract the information specific to a state (my interest happens to be Missouri, right now), and pile it all into a book (or, more likely, books) as sort of a grand collecting reference for a specific geographic area. As someone who is interested in many different subjects (and somewhat undisciplined at times), this kind of collecting (i.e. state specific) is very appealing--brings a kind of cohesion to one's collection (it is easy to get lost in the general, non-postal, history as well). This is surely a challenging and daunting task, but, I hope, not totally unrealistic with time.
In any case, we are all standing on the shoulders of giants, and we owe a great debt to those who studied all of this before us (and took the time to write it down). We owe it to them to continue the work.

It's not often I come across books or journals that I need or want. On those rare occasions that I do, I am either outbid by a country mile or the Postage charges are just overly excessive !!
But I have finally found a place to get something for my Library with very little postage to pay when sent to a UK address. So I have ordered the following for collection during my upcoming trip to Europe !!
1). Phantom Philately, Fred Melville 2). Images of the Great War, Vol II, W.Schmidt 3). Images of the Great War, Vol 5, Charles Kiddle 4). The Cinderella Philatelist Vols.12-16, Williams
Plenty to read on all those Plane, Bus and Train journeys !!

Are the good times gone for really Specialized Books?
Aside from newer editions of Specialized Catalogs which in many cases are not all that specialized. the best books written by Philatelists who collected specific countries were written in year dates with a "19XX". Most between 1930 and 1980 by collectors/philatelists who spent 40-60 years amassing their specific knowledge and collections. Even modern Specialized catalogs generally depend on the works of past philatelists.
I can think of 2 specific one that I communicated with and are gone. Their massive holdings were put on auction by lots and dispersed. DR. Ceresa (Russia & Eastern Europe), Graus (Spain). Websites they maintained are no longer accessible as they were member protected.
Prior to that Philatelists who studied and wrote about their findings like Faberge, Lichtenstein, Chapman, Smythies, their collections were long ago dispersed
When they wrote their articles and books, the stamps, even early ones were still available and affordable. Now most major collections are in museums, philatelic societies or with "collectors".
The real problem for collectors is that these Specialized books are now getting very difficult and expensive to find.

As sherro , I am also curious about your Checklist for French Numeral Cancellations zipper !! Seems very interesting You might take a look at the one-off 2009 super-specialized Ceres (France) catalogs, 2 volumes. It has an immense amount of information (in letters about 3mm high on very glossy paper ). It was printed and im-perfectly bound in Greece , and my copy has already separated into about ten mini-volumes after ten years.

If interested, just PM me.

Thanks Chris, if I would use it in my collective habits, I would get it shipped to Madawaska, Maine (across the bridge) - hope real collectors are able to accept your kind offer.......shipping costs around the World do represent some $$$$ (in any currency except the $US)- I do not mind if it is something I need, but just to put it in the Library, no - Enjoy your travels and thanks for sharing !!
