Here is the latest addition to the library shelf that arrived in today's post,
A well written text with plenty of details covering the entire Ceres series of Portugal and its eight printings (1912-1931)...
Happy collecting!

Last Fall, coastwatcher alerted me that this book was available at Abe Books. So I ordered it. Their receipt stated delivery by January 9, 2 months distant. Almost a month late, it finally arrived. And that was after I had complained that it wasn't here 1-½ weeks ago. Figures, Abe Books is in the US, the book store that said they had it too, but the package was mailed from Sweden! Good grief. And neither book dealer could confirm the the book was actually mailed & that they must have not had it in stock! They refunded my money & stated that should it arrive, not to worry, the book is yours - gratis! Thanks Abe Books, but I don't think I'll order from you again. It is quite a hefty tome! 567 pages. Here I thought it was a few pages in a softcover. I hardly have the numbers to do a proper study of this series, but I should know what I have!

What I collect: Worldwide Stamps 1840-1930

Today I spent a little time reading some 40 pages of Simon Garfield's 'The Error World--A Memoir of Obsession and Desire'. Having read only a fifth of the book I can already highly recommend this 'book about himself' to every Stampaholic ! Witty, True, Frightening and thought-provoking, Garfield writes about his love of another woman and his obsession with Stamps (mainly errors) in such a way that will have you in fits of laughter. Some (non-collectors) might say it just takes away the seriousness of the events. That may be true. But an obsessive Stamp Collector would understand. So I guess most of our TSF members might too !! "Little do wives know how much men spend on their hobbies. But my wife is about to find out". The first line of the book about the visit to a marriage Guidance counselor. Garfield even took in his most valuable Stamp album and then says of the Counselor, "She was bored within 30 seconds" !! I think I laughed more today during those 40 pages than I have for the rest of the year put together. A non-collector most likely would not have thought it funny. So a great read for 'Stamp Collectors only"? Why not? Why not, indeed! Just wanted to give a shout-out of thanks to LB1 for passing along the referenced book to me. I also really enjoyed it, but would tend to agree that it will take a collector or someone connected to the activity of collecting to fully appreciate it. My personal favorite quote in the book is: Based on my visits to stamp shops back in the 1970s when I was growing up, I definitely had these same feelings. As for the porn shop, well, I couldn't really say..... What I can say is that with LB1's agreement (already secured), I am planning to pass along this book to another interested party. If anyone is interested, and particularly if you are planning to attend the London 2020 show, please let me know, and I will see what we can work out. Thanks again for sharing, Michael, great stuff!

Beryllium Guy - I would love that book! I certainly recognize the feelings you've described above, haha. Will read it out loud for my wife...and finally I will laugh at something she might not find funny at all Thanks to Londonbus1 for presenting the book in the first place, by your comments it seems to me perfect for minds like us

Thanks to the posts by Londonbus1 and @beryllium Guy, I decided that I needed to read “The Error World.” I immediately found one on eBay and was about to hit the Buy It Now button when something stopped me. As I have quite a few philatelic books that I’ve yet to read, I decided to check my library before ordering one and guess what I found?

Placed my order today for this text and am currently thinking about adding examples of the stamps, or at least facsimiles of them to my Penguin collection,
Take a look as time and interests permit...
Happy collecting!

Received today. Whoever previoulsy owned this put a line through those stamps in his/her collection (I guess) fortunately it looks like they mainly collected modern as the classics are pretty much free of marks! There is some additional details here (as I hoped) - I think (for now) I have enough reference material for Early France!

I’ve had On the Road: The Quest for Stamps by Stephen R. Datz for quite awhile now, but only recently got around to reading it. Before I was even halfway through, I liked it so well that I ordered a copy of another one of his books, The Wild Side: Philatelic Mischief, Murder & Intrigue, which arrived today. If you like the writings of Herman “Pat” Herst, you will like Datz’s books as well. A longtime dealer, he reminisces about his many years in the business with interesting and humorous tales. Although I have yet to read The Wild Side, I’m sure that I’ll be able to recommend it as highly as I do On the Road!

With dank 's new member introduction, I was reminded of the artist Donald Evans and his miniature watercolours depicting the stamps of fantasy lands with their inhabitants, events and other interests. The text, now out of print, is a welcome escape and does get pulled from the shelf from time-to-time...
Eisenhart, Willy. The World of Donald Evans. Abbeville Press, 1994.
Happy collecting!
PS. I recall reading the Dutch government had commissioned Mr. Evans to do a real postage stamp, but can find no reference to it ever being produced.

Because of the virus I'm in a different house at the moment, and I have with me a very small part of my philatelic library. I don't remenber everything I have . I must say that I am very fussy about philatelic books, I do not borrow and do not dispose of the old catalogs, I find them even richer in explanations of the new ones sometimes . So I keep everything. I think Enzo Diena use to say ....first the books, then the stamps, and then postal history .
