I was so happy yesterday! I finished mounting all my modern Canada. Then I move a few things around, and look what I found... a reasonably priced quarterly (or more like half) pack...
Dang! I thought I was done with them! Now Christmas is in, along with Remembrance Day & Margaret Atwood, and a few others! Once that is done... phew! That binder is bulging, and in need of a 5th red Canada binder!

So many places this could go, but I stuck with this thread.
I opened up the pack, as shown above. Talk about inconsistencies! The Christopher Plummer die-cut stamp was included, along with one water-activated gum stamp. OTOH, the Valour Road stamp came with a die-cut stamp and a mini-sheet of 5 water-activated gum stamps!
I guess they didn't want to drain the accounts of collector's too much!
I'll have to tear apart the mini-sheet, as it is huge & don't want it in my collection. That's what I should have down with the Formula one "souvenir sheet" as it too is huge! It did have one of each of the series of 5 though. But I hate these giant mini-sheets! Just issue in sheets of 50 and booklets and a souvenir sheet of just one stamp, in a reasonable size! Is that too much to ask for? When all you want is a couple stamps, they make you buy a booklet of 6-10 stamps!
Enough ranting, time to get back to stamps!

One more thing...
I was going to buy the 2022 Unitrade, but will wait for 2023 instead.
Die-cut's were given the "I" sub-number, as in 2702 for the self-adhesive and 2702i for the die-cut. Looking at Colnect, Unitrade is now using "a" instead of "i". Is there any reasoning behind the switch? When did it change? All in the 2020 catalogue, are for the most part "i".
TIA

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

I have never gone out of my way to buy the Canada Post Annual Collections but as has happened with a lot of my collecting several have found me when buying larger job lots. I always looked at them as being a source for postage. When looking at a recent auction catalogue I was surprised to learn that a few years are worth far more than the postage. For some reason 1974 has a catalogue value of over 200.00 CDN and 1975 is around 100.00. I happen to have those 2 years with original envelopes as well as 1977,1984 and 1986. 1977 and 1986 are still sealed. I am glad I have not robbed them for postage.

Another modern sheet that was too nice to use for postage is this sheet for Canada Day 1992. We were celebrating our 125th anniversary of Confederation that year. Unitrade 1431a.

Hey all... just adding my two cents worth as I visit the threads, so it'll show up in my "Participated" where I track all my favourite topics. Just curious... anyone among us collectors of Canada fortunate enough to have (or have seen) a Connell stamp? One of my particular favourite stories of Hubris Run Amok, LOL! I would LOVE to add one of those to my collection, although it won't be unless I win the lottery or something... and since I don't buy lottery tickets, the old Lottery maxim, "You Never Know..." will never apply to me!

Being from Nova Scotia originally I have been more focused on stamps from there so to be honest I had never heard or read the story of the Connell stamp till now. I see there is at least one posting about it on a New Brunswick thread. I suspect that is the appropriate area for this topic as it pre dates confederation. Sadly I do not own an example and like you I rather doubt I ever will unless a secret stash is found. I see there are lots of interesting articles on line.

Will surely never get that stamp in my New Brunswick collection - Fun to read various histories about it - They used it (not the real one !!) for a cover in 2016 - BNAPEX 2016 in Fredericton, N.B. - Why ?? I do not know

Carmen ( seegod1) & Peter ( brightonpete): If you are interested in a way to have a representative stamp for the Connell issue, you should consider looking for a die or plate proof rather than the actual stamp. I saw one on offer sometime in the past year or so at around $100-150, if memory serves me correctly. It would be a nice way to include one in your collection without having to spend thousands.

I have seen several Connells over the years. The best one was on display at Connell House in Woodstock, New Brunswick. Connell House was Connell's mansion and is now an event venue and museum. I believe the stamp is still there and I know the owner. Doubt he will ever sell it and it likely has or will be given to the venue. A noted dealer in Montreal showed me two a few years ago and I expect, if someone were seriously thinking of acquiring one, that would be a good place to begin looking. I saw one at Capex at a high but reasonable price. The dealer called me a week later and told me another one had sold at a New York auction a week after Capex at more than 4 times what he was asking. Apparently, it was an almost pristine copy whereas his has a trimmed left edge (doesn't cut into the design). I'm curious about how many are known to still exist. Cursory research suggested about 50-60 specimens, but that could be wrong. Proofs are much easier to acquire, but the prices have risen over the past few years. I bought one about seven or eight years ago at $150. If one can be found at that price (give or take), it would be a good buy as I've seen much higher asking prices. Here is my proof.

hello all ........... a charity shop purchase this morning provided more Canadian than you could shake a stick at, almost all modern unfortunately and with some FDC's included - just one or two as per attached pix. I like the Endangered Species pack which included 'The Swift Fox' - a vernacular name presumably, with the French equivalent that I like better - 'Reynard veloce' - but it's the other pair, with the home made FDC for the 5c. Beaver that has a rather personal touch. The envelope still contains the letter written in 1954 to a niece by her aunt explaining that this item is a FDC, and telling the young girl to 'tell Mummy to put it in your book.' Not that I'd have known, but apparently Kingston is a city within Ontario. I had hoped that the large bag I bought from the shop might include some C19 British, but almost nothing, and I suspect that the bulk will go back to the charity shop. René - still trying to balance up my debt for your recent gift - incidentally still not arrived, are you sure it's not coming by sea mail;-) ? - is there anything here that you would like?

Can someone tell me what this is all about please? Here is a link to Canada Post site that explains this program. It appears it will be discontinued soon. An individual or company can purchase/create personalized stamps. I have done so years ago when it was first offered. very easily done. You submit a photo, and amount of stamps required. The photo submitted is subject to approval by Canada Post. The stamp would have the value of current domestic rate. www.picturepostage.ca/en

Although not announced, it became clear at a recent seminar that Canada Post had at CAPEX in June, that the Canadian Bank Note Company is no longer going to have a contract to print Canadian stamps. Canada Post alluded to their "two printers" when in fact, they have been using three - Canadian Bank Note, Lowe-Martin, and Colour Innovations. Although new to the group, Colour Innovations have been getting more and more of the work each year. Colour Innovations was also at CAPEX and gave a really interesting seminar about their business. Lowe-Martin is the only one of the three who can currently print coil stamps. So although the Canada Post speakers would not give any more details other than the fact that they were to use only 2 printers in the future, it is pretty clear that it is the Canadian Bank Note Company who is out. In speaking with numerous industry people over the 4 day CAPEX event, I was led to understand that security issues was the main problem with the CBN.
What this does mean though, is the end to Engraved stamps, as the CBN was the only company capable, at this time anyway, of producing engraved stamps.

Canada issued this stamp on Apr 1, 1949 (shown as a PB), Unitrade Canada Spec Cat # 282 - on the occasion of Newfounland's entry into Confederation as Canada's 10th Province.
Formerly known as Newfoundland Colony and subsequently the Dominion of Newfoundland, Newfoundland surrendered its independence to the British Empire in 1933, following substantial economic suffering caused by the Great Depression and the aftermath of Newfoundland's participation in World War I. On March 31, 1949, it became the tenth and last province to join the Canadian Confederation as "Newfoundland." On December 6, 2001, the Constitution of Canada was amended to change the province's name to Newfoundland and Labrador.(Wiki) edit: Stamp shows Cabot's ship Matthew
