What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

That pane of 20 stamps which you show has a bit of a history to it. Those were originally sold as Cello Paqs (or Cello Paks, or Cello-Packs, or whatever it was - black cat is on my arm as I type & the catalogue is not at hand right now). A number of Canadian definitive & Christmas issues were sold in small panes wrapped in a cellophane packet ("for pocket or purse" - imagine how crumpled your stamps would get if you carried them in your pocket...). The 5 cent stamps were sold in panes of 20 so the total price would be $1, whereas 4 cent stamps came in a pane of 25 to also sell for $1. 2 cent & 3 cent issues exist as well - those were sold with two panes in a packet. Here's an image of the 5 cent Cameo in its Cello Paq, nabbed from an eBay listing. Ryan philatelia I thought for sure I had seen the block in the wrapper on TSF before and here it is from 2019.

Yes! I thought I’d remember seeing those, too. That label “for pocket or purse” is odd. Pocket??

Yes! I thought I’d remember seeing those, too. That label “for pocket or purse” is odd. Pocket?? In all fairness, I'm sure I've kept far stranger things in my pockets at times over the years! Joking aside, maybe it could mean the pocket of a bag, and purse as in wallet? Potentially slightly lost in translation and oddly phrased, but I like it.

Unitrade numbers it as # 405bi (Cello paq) while #405b (shown in another thread) is without Cello - René

Yes! I thought I’d remember seeing those, too. That label “for pocket or purse” is odd. Pocket?? One has to think of the era of these sheets when men were wearing suits and sports coats more often with good size pockets on the side and women’s purses were a good size.

Back in July these Cameo miniature panes came up for discussion again featuring the 5 cent value in the cello paq. I knew I had one of those but had forgotten I also had the 4 cent pane still in the packaging. The Unitrade number is 404b for this one. I would be a little excited if it was the 404bi which has florescent paper. My black light needs batteries so I am not able to check it.

Today is the 3rd National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. It is a time to reflect and honour the 1000’s of children placed in residential schools, many of whom never made it home. It is not a proud moment in our history. Canada Post has issued 4 new stamps today as a remembrance of this sad past. The following images are from their Instagram posting today.

Thank you for sharing the TRC stamps, hdm1950. I'll be sure to purchase some in the coming days, although the images of the schools chill my heart. I haven't been following Canada new issues for several years now, though I just purchased some Indigneous leader booklets after seeing the George Manuel stamps at the post office. I didn't know Canada Post was offering stamps around the day of Truth and Reconciliation. I'm off to two gatherings today - one with Residential School survivors and later to the South Island Powwow. It promises to be a powerful and emotionally moving day, for sure.

These 2 annual collection books were at the bottom of one of the boxes I bought yesterday. I had cut off my Canada collection at 1990 but it appears now I have advanced to 1992. This is the first time I have seen the annual collections of this era and I must say I am impressed with the coffee table quality with hard covers and dust jackets. 1992 is still in it’s plastic although a bit tattered.

I must say I am impressed with the coffee table quality with hard covers and dust jackets. Once upon a time I bought a mint Canadian collection and it came in a Lindner hingeless album (volumes 1 & 2, up to 1974 or so), so later on I started looking for later volumes of the Lindner hingeless albums. A dealer told to me to not bother beyond volume whatever it was, because the Canada Post yearbooks were so vastly better in value - hardly any more costly than the mint stamps themselves and packaged in such nicely illustrated books. I did eventually buy another collection that contained even more Lindner pages so now I have them up to about 2014 or so, but I kept buying the Canada Post yearbooks up to about 2015 too, and they are certainly far more informative and nicer to look at. The High cost of modern Philately The cost to secure a full pane of Cinderellas with a retail value of just cents. (Nonetheless, desired by moi) Must say, I prefer the Modern Canadian Ring Postmarks, against the large Oblong impressions I am presuming the ring has the Postcode?

<snip> I am presuming the ring has the Postcode? Hi rod222, That is definitely not the postal code. It is the numeric identifier of the post office.

Cancellations with those 6-digit numbers are known as POCON cancellations - Post Office Computer Organization Number. They were introduced in 1973 and replaced the older 4-digit numbers (and sometimes 5-digit, for tiny post offices) seen on MOON cancellations, with that acronym standing for Money Order Office Number. Apart from postal cancellations, you can also see those on old Canadian precancelled stamps where they were used to represent the city. Here's an example of that, my city of Calgary (image nabbed from a HipStamp seller). For the non-tiny offices which used the 4-digit numbers, Maritime provinces in the east started with an X, then Quebec starting with 0 or 1, Ontario with 2, 3 or 4, Manitoba with 5, Saskatchewan with 7, Alberta with 8 and British Columbia with 9. Hugh Canadian Contingents Anglo-Boer War 1899 - 1902 The contingent handstamp, affords the free transit of mail to Canada. PS: The Postal Service of the Canadians was astonishing ! Quote " I have seen 15 lorry loads of mail at one time being unloaded at the Post Office" Seems you have Type ll of the Contingent hammer.

Year 2002
Picture from Colnect
It is interesting to pick one of Canada's issues that span from Year 2000 to Year 2005 on the National Hockey League (NHL) All-Stars, in 6 issues. I thought your post would stimulate me to post all 6 issues, with scans of panes (minus booklets). This in a Canadian thread wich I will create (if not already there....have to check) - these scans I do have in my CANADA collection. Thanks franoise !! René p.s. there will be a delay in presenting the 6 scans as I cannot locate Scan # 2017 (even though my inventory says I have the 6 !!)

Taking me away from stamping this week was the annual Wolfe Island Plowing match. An exciting feature of this year's event was that is was being held together with the 2024 Canadian Plowing Championship. Wolfe Island was the host this year. The top two champions will represent Canada at the World Contest next year in the Czech Republic. However, my favourite memory will be the eight-year old who won his age group event. His prize was $80 and a pie. His joy was infectious and his smile was amazing ... I suspect he was more enamoured with the pie than the money. Wouldn't you be? (smile).
Anyway to celebrate the last day of the event, here is a wonderful Canadian stamp featuring a plow, two horse and a couple of farmworkers. (How many plowing stamps are there? I wonder. Not harvesting but plowing.]
Here's the straight and narrow on the stamp:
Canada - King George VI - Peace Series (following WW2) 8c, Red-Brown, engraved by Warrell Hauck Issued on September 16, 1946 Unitrade 268

... the annual Wolfe Island Plowing match. On a Canada-related note and a plowing-related note, but not a Canadian plowing stamp-related note ... I'm currently finishing up another Margaret Atwood book, this time The Blind Assassin, a Booker Prize winner. While reading during my exercise bike session tonight, I came across the word "snowplough", which got me thinking - what is the correct Canadian English spelling, "plow" or "plough"? My copy of the book is an edition under the Emblem / McClelland & Stewart imprint, a Canadian company, and Atwood uses Canadian English spellings elsewhere in words like "humour" or "colour", but I've always used the word "plow" in my own Canadian English writing, like Hugh does above, not "plough", as I was surprised to find in this Atwood book. According to what I can find, "plow" is in fact the common usage for us Canucks, and for the Yanks, but not the Brits or the Aussies (or, I assume by extension, Kiwis). And on an even more tangential note - what's an acre? It was supposedly originally defined as the amount of land one man with one horse should be able to plow / plough in one day. Any student of the metric system with middling knowledge knows what a hectare is (100m x 100m or 10,000m 2). But what's an acre? A furlong by a chain! What's a furlong? 10 chains! What's a chain? 4 rods! What's a rod? 25 links! What's a link? 7.92 inches! And let's not even go into the differences between a survey inch, or an international inch, or a pre-1959 imperial inch ... (fortunately, there's not much need to go into the differences there, as the differences are pretty tiny.) Ryan

RyanHi Ryan, Both are English origin, Plow is used mainly by US, Plough By Australia, New Zealand Language cannot be perfect, being constantly evolving. I have trouble understanding the young folk. 1 x Hectare is 10,000 square metres (2.471 Acres) Local parlance, I live on a "quarter acre" but in truth I think it's approx 1200 - 1400 square metres The United States owns 8 million Hectares of our land.
