alymegoli Those are worth conserving. A serious collector or exhibitor of one of those stamps would certainly appreciate adding a folder to their holdings.

Hey everyone! I was just on Canada Post's website to see about Quarterly Pack Number 2 (Apr-Jun) and 3 (Jul-Sep) and am seeing nothing there as available. No 3 I get cause I guess they wait to the end of September, but #2? Anyone else seen this/got it? I'm not a subscriber to them although I used to be and am reconsidering doing that but for now...
Or have they decided to no longer issue them in Quarterlies or something and I'm not aware of it?
Anyone? Thanks!

Aw thanks hdm1950 ! Yes it's been a quiet few months, usually because I'm out and about far more than I'm in during our beautiful summers and was really not doing much with my stamps other than lurking in the groups every now and then to see what was going on after attending CAPEX.

One of the new stamps issued by Canada Post depicts Wallace Rupert Turnbull (1870-1954), inventor of the variable pitch propeller. He was from Rothesay, New Brunswick (my town) and his grandson, also Wallace Turnbull, was a business associate and friend of mine. Unfortunately, Wally is quite ill and I was speaking with his son today. I hope to have a couple of covers autographed by a member of the family.

"Canada Post said the stamp shows the Beaver’s popularity far beyond the country’s borders."
And a Prize-Winning Save by Canada Post! "Yeah that's it, people, we'll tell 'em it's because it shows... uh... *worldwide success*... sure, that's it!"
LOL!

December 6th is the 105th anniversary of the Halifax Explosion. Until the dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan in WWII it was the largest man made explosion ever. It left around 2000 dead and over 9000 injured. It was devastating to the city and was followed shortly by a blizzard that made the human tragedy even worse. Nova Scotia sends a giant Christmas tree to Boston every year to thank them for all their assistance in the aftermath. There are many sites that document the disaster. Here is a link for a short report. www.warmuseum.ca/firstworldwar/history/life-at-home-during-the-war/wartime-tragedies/the-halifax-explosion/ I do not collect modern Canadian stamps and so I do not have the stamp issued to commemorate the sad event on the 100th anniversary. There is a memorial service there today. I do not recall there being any impact on my immediate family but for sure everyone in the province was touched in some way. Here is an image of the stamp.

hdm1950 , thanks for that post. I knew about the NS-tree-to-Boston thing, but had never known why. I just thought it was some long-standing tradition...

these are from a recent purchase of a small Canada collection, which includes some worthwhile and clean labels, which should encourage me to get on with some useful work on this part of the world. The first page showing in the attached pix is headed 'Pre-cancels and shows def. issues from the '40s and '50s of U.K. monarchs George VI and QE II. I've a lot of U.S. pre-cancels with, usually, two horizontal bars, between which the town or city of purchase is printed, but seeing Nos. only is new for me - in other respects these are all very common heads. Presumably the Nos. showing on the 2c. sepia indicate the places of purchase, but I'm guessing, so very grateful if someone might have the time to put some flesh on the bones and give a little information on these, plus why the other stamps here show triple double lines without a No., and what we should make of the WARNING. Other stamps that came in with this album are a few of the 'small head' QV definitives SG 46 to 52 issued 1870 - 1893, including a lovely 1/2 cent black SG 46 - almost a bantam in size compared to the others in the set - if it's a bona fide example then not to be sniffed at. thanks for looking.

The photo below will explain the 2 with numbers. The other information I am afraid would require a lot of reading to fully answer your questions. The Warning is mentioned on one page but no specific information. I would assume the precancels were for specific commercial use and not for regular consumers.

thanks for taking the time to photograph and post this list - so, these Nos. were allocated to Winnipeg and Vancouver - interesting to know. These few are unused, clean and mostly hinged on the selvedge, so despite being common are welcome - plus, for me, unusual. I did spend some time collecting States pre-cancel issues - I seem to have dozens, but have moved on for now and don't see them so often. thanks again.
On one occasion Brendan Behan was seen topping up his scotch with ginger ale - boozing yet again said one observer - well, said Brendan, you know what the adverts say 'Drink Canada Dry' - so I'm just making a start.

I really like the textile/embroidery-style design of these two new stamps issued by Canada last week. The theme is "Animal Mothers & Babies," showing some happy sea otters and red-necked grebes. Here they are as a souvenir sheet; I believe they're also available as a regular self-adhesive booklet.

I do believe pre cancels were use by companies that had large mailings and perhaps the use was more “ controlled “ by post office. I am new to collecting these stamps. There is a catalogue out there for pre cancels. I know it is not badly priced and I think I have a couple of copies. I will locate them and if you have questions send me a message and I will try to help you out. David

Hi David (dgdecker) - many thanks for the generous offer of help re these issues. You'll have seen the very informative link from hdm1950, showing list of precancel cities for the various 'numbers', which very helpful, and will come back to your offer as and when I dig a little deeper into these things. thanks again.

Permanent stamps bought today while mailing my giveaway to mberryThe modern Commonwealth is a values-based association of 56 countries, most with historic links to the United Kingdom and home to over 2.5 billion people over five continents. Canada first joined the British Commonwealth as an independent state in 1931. The modern Commonwealth came into existence in 1949 with the London Declaration, and Canada has played an important role in its evolution. Queen Elizabeth II served as the Head of Commonwealth during her 70-year reign. The role of Head has now passed to King Charles III, who attended the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in June 2022 in Kigali, Rwanda.

very 'definitive' Rene - thanks for posting. In view of the absence of a value, are these what might be termed 'first class' stamps?

very 'definitive' Rene - thanks for posting. In view of the absence of a value, are these what might be termed 'first class' stamps? these are 92 ¢ - (+ tax) and their value will never change (even is Canada Post changes value for the purpose) 1st class ? Have not heard that word in a while - they are for inland posting up to 30g and/but may be combined 92 ¢ + 92¢ etc etc for any letter (value remains as is) - very popular to send a card or small envelope (less than 30 g) - anywhere in Canada and in the World !! staying with a country I know little about - so here are two commonplace items - the Northern Gannet is SG 474 from April '54, and the Inuit Hunter is SG 477 from February '55 - I was about to soak off which would have lost part of the date stamp which reads 9477 - NAMU - MAR 10 1956, so kept intact. Apparently Namu is a former abandoned cannery and small fishing port/ghost town on an obscure part of the coast of B.C. - seems Namu means place of high winds - and possibly the oldest known site on the B.C. coast - inhabited K10 years ago. Another tit bit of obscure information is .......... Namu was the namesake of the Killer whale NAMU who was captured nearby in 1965, and was only the second Orca ever displayed in captivity. The date stamp presumably indicates the item was posted at Namu on 10th March '56, and I assumed 9477 was the area code for this location - don't think it's one of the known precancel numbers - but I stand to be corrected of course, and if anyone knows more please do shout which will add interest. thanks.

I believe this style of postmark with data in 4 lines, headed with a 4-digit number, are called MOON cancels - the MOON representing Money Order Office Number. I suggest that this little scrap with postmark and stamps would be desired by BC MOON (or town cancel) collectors. Mr. Google might put you in contact with the appropriate study group or interested party.

It's possible this is another ............ the same sort of purple ink used to create rectangular blocked information, which reads .... 'KLEMTU - APR 15 1952 - B.C.' - on a 50 cent 'Oil Wells in Alberta', first issued in March 1950 - S.G. 431. Klemtu - so Wiki says - is a small village in B.C. coastal mountains in the heart of Great Bear Rainforest region - with access restricted to boat or float plane - or possibly Shanks's Pony - it's home to Kitasoo and Xai'ais people.
