King´s funeral, issued April 29th,1961. King Sisavang Vong was born in 1885.He became King of Luang Prabang, after the death of his father in 1904. Being a lifelong supporter of french rule,he was shortly deposed by Lao nationalists in 1945,before he was
re-instated by the French in 1946,now as king of all Laos.He had to declare Laos independent, after the French withdraw from Indochina in 1954. He had about fifty children by about 15 wifes. He died on Oct.10th,1959.

King Savang Vattana (1907 - 1980(?)) was the last king of Laos. He became king in 1959 and was forced to abdicate the throne in 1975. Two years later he was detained in a "re-education camp",where he died presumably in 1980.
Set issued on April 16th,1962.

After a break of more than ten years, this was the first commemorative souvenir sheet from Laos. It is pretty scarce and not cheap.

There were four souvenir sheets issued, sold in a booklet. I show one each perforated and imperforated. The perforated are gummed, while the imperforated are printed on thick ungummed paper, reminding very much of de-luxe sheets. The set of 4 is listed by Michel with € 600.-,so by no means a cheapy !

This set,"Freedom from Hunger",issued March 21st,1963,was shown before in the first post of this thread.
There is also an imperforated souvenir sheet.(stamps are of the same size as the perforated ones). According to Michel cat.,there were two printings of this s.s.: one with yellow gum, print 5.000 and one with white gum, print 75.000. The ones I have all show a more or less yellowish gum,but none with a white gum. Most likely this is due to tropicalization. I think somewhere I read that there are also some differences in the colours of the stamps. But I do not know, which are what.
By the way,the sheet is difficult to store,because of it´s size: 220 by 101 mm.(slightly longer than a HAWID-strip)

I'd just centre the souvenir sheet in the mount and leave it like that. I'm sure no harm would come to it. But then I use page protectors, so that might make a difference. Nice looking sheet, salentin !

the missing Sc.492,issued Oct.8th,1983; I just wonder, why the stamp, what shows the french explorer Jean-Baptist Charcot (1867-1936) is inscribed "Cabot".

John Cabot (Italian: Giovanni Caboto [dʒoˈvanni kaˈbɔːto]; c. 1450 – c. 1500) was an Italian navigator and explorer. His 1497 voyage to the coast of North America under the commission of Henry VII of England is the earliest known European exploration of coastal North America since the Norse visits to Vinland in the eleventh century. (ref Wikipedia) Jean Cabot(as nown in french Canada) on the stamp is O.K. The other info (incl date) is in error. René Thanks for showing the missing stamp, salentin

René, I cannot make sence from your answer. My qestion was,how come that the stamp is inscribed "Cabot",while it shows Jean-Baptist Charcot and his ship "Pourquoi Pas?". Werner

Souvenir-sheet-stamps and "ordinary" ones for comparison. Slight colour-differences,but I suppose more accidental than of great significance. However I do not have enough duplication to be sure.

15th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, issued Dec 10th, 1963.
This is the only stamp of the kingdom, apart from stamps, cut out of souvenir sheets and some of the "Agency-Issues of 1975", that is listed by Michel as perforated and imperforate.
Many other imperforate stamps, issued together with de-luxe-sheets do exist, but those were not valid as postage. The above seems to be the only one. Michel lists the imperforate stamps at about the ten-times price of the perforated ones.

Does that mean the de-luxe sheets are Cinderellas ? I am curious because if they are you know what that means !!

If your definition of "Cinderella" includes everything, what has a resemblance to a postage stamp, but what is/was not valid for postage, you may call de-luxe sheets cinderellas.
However this would be a too far-fetched definition in my eyes.
The de-luxe sheets in combination with the imperforated stamps,were/(are?) issued in many countries of french expression. They are similar to the "specimen"-stamps in the english world,or the "Muster"-stamps in Germany (or "muestra" in castellano). Or think of the "Schwarzdrucke" of Austria. All these were given to news-papers and other interested sides, ususally in advance to the issue of the stamp, so that they could illustrate articles about new issues. However I do not know, wether and to what extent de-luxe combinations were also put on sale.
I myself had a good number of de-luxe combinations of Laos, what I had bought from a dealer in Hong-Kong,long time ago. Before moving to Paraguay I sold all,but one,to a dealer in Thailand, who also bought my Laos (P.R.) imperforated
stamps of 1976/79 and the provisionals of 1982 and 1985. However I still have several imperforated stamps of the pre-1975 periode, but not in complete blocs.

The arrangement of the set in the souvenir sheets makes the designs obvious:they form the map of Laos. The s.s. was sold also imperforated, placed in a folder. The building on the 40 Kip stamp is the King´s royal residence,- palace seems to be an exaggeration to me -,in Luang Prabang.

An imperforated souvenir sheet came with the set. S.S. without control-number come from sheets, sold in a folder. There the control-number is printed on the back-side of the folder.
