100 years of the Kachin Pilot School. The Kachinsky Higher Military Aviation School of Pilots is the first military pilot school in Russia. It was created with the assistance of Grand Duke A.M. Romanov on November 21, 1910, using voluntary donations from citizens. The first graduation from the Sevastopol Aviation Officer School (the school’s original name) took place on October 26, 1911. And in 1912, the school was relocated to its own air camp on the Kacha River, subsequently receiving the name Kachinskaya. The school is rightfully proud of its illustrious graduates: three times Hero of the Soviet Union, Air Marshal A.I. Pokryshkin; Heroes of the Soviet Union - cosmonaut V.M. Afanasyev, test pilot S.A. Mikoyan; Honored Test Pilot B.L. Bucholz and many others. The school trained about 17,000 pilots. Among them: 329 Heroes of the Soviet Union, 29 Heroes of Russia, 126 Honored Pilots, 12 Air Marshals. In honor of the Kachinsky Pilot School, airplane monuments were erected in Volgograd and the city of Kotelnikovo, Volgograd Region. The postage stamp is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the founding of the school. The stamp depicts the 1938 college graduate badge.

Balkan Ту-154B LZ-TBMOn 29 June 1977, Bulgaria issued a 35 st. stamp commemorating 30 years of civil aviation in Bulgaria. It also issued a miniature sheet with six stamps in two columns of three, divided by a column of three labels. The labels are inscribed ‘thirty years Bulgarian civil aviation 1947 – Balkan - 1977.' In 1946, Bulgaria’s Ministry for Transport and Communication established the administration for aerial communication (DVS). Under the name Balgarski vazdushni linii (Bulgarian airlines), the DVS made its first flight from Sofia via Plovdiv to Burgas, on 29 June 1947. The Russian occupier took control of the airline and renamed it TABSO (Bulgarian-Soviet Transport Aviation Corporation). On 1 January 1968, TABSO was renamed Balkan - Balgarski vazdushni linii. The company went bankrupt in 2002 and was acquired by Bulgaria Air. The stamps depict the tail of a Tupolev Tu-154B with registration LZ-BTM in the livery of Bulgaria’s national air carrier ‘Balkan Bulgarian Airlines.’ Balkan was the first air carrier outside the Soviet Union to fly Tupolev 154 aeroplanes, including the Tu-154B. The aeroplane with registration LZ-BTM was delivered to Balkan 1977. It remained in service until 1996. 29 June 1977, Bulgaria, 30 Years of Bulgarian Civil Aviation, Michel nr. BG 2616KBOn a personal note: I flew on this type of aeroplane with Balkan between Amsterdam and Varna. How ignorance was bliss! They have always been dangerous. We bought this miniature sheet in a stamp shop during our stay in Bulgaria. 35 years passed before I returned there.

Aer Lingus Boeing 747-100On 27 May 1986, An Post issued two stamps to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Ireland’s national air carrier, Aer Lingus. The carrier’s name means ‘air fleet.’ (I wonder how this translates into Russian). The word ‘lingus’ is the anglicised version of the Gaeilge ‘loingeas’ that means ship or fleet. The 28p stamp depicts a Boeing 747-100 in the livery of Aer Lingus over the North Atlantic. The carrier’s network is represented by red arches originating from its Dublin hub. Aer Lingus operated two Boeing 747-100 in its transatlantic fleet between 1971 and 1995. These had registrations EI-ASI (St, Patrick) and EI-ASJ. 27 May 1986, Éire, 50th Anniversary of Aer Lingus, 'Boeing 747-100' (Hibernian nr. C432).

Aer Lingus De Havilland DH.84 Dragon EI-ABIThe 46p stamp issued on 27 May 1986 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Aer Lingus depicts the De Havilland DH.84 Dragon ‘Iolar’ with registration EI-ABI. The Gaeilge ‘Iolar’ means ‘eagle.’ Aer Lingus operated its first flight with this aeroplane, on 27 May 1936. The flight took off from Baldonnel Airfield near Dublin. Its destination was Whitchurch Airport near Bristol, England. 27 May 1986, Éire, 50th Anniversary of Aer Lingus, ‘De Havilland DH.84 Dragon’ (Hibernian nr. C433).

IBERIA Rohrbach Ro-VIII Roland (M-CBBB) and McDonnell Douglas DC10-30 (EC-CBN)On 8 November 1977, Correos issued a 12 pta stamp commemorating the 50th anniversary of IBERIA Lineas Aéreas de España. Iberia operated its inaugural flight on 14 December 1927. The flight was to depart from the airport at Carabanchel near Madrid, currently ‘Cuatro Vientos.’ King Alfonso XIII would be aboard the flight to Barcelona. The actual first flight took place two hours earlier between Barcelona and Madrid so the King could witness its landing at Carabanchel. The stamp depicts the Rohrbach Ro-VIII Roland with registration M-CBBB that was IBERIA’s first aeroplane. The second plane depicted on the stamp is IBERIA’s first McDonnell Douglas DC10-30 ‘Costa Brava’ with registration EC-CBN in the livery of IBERIA at the time the stamp was issued. IBERIA took delivery of this aeroplane in 1973. It made its maiden flight for the airline on 20 March 1973. On 17 December 1973, during a landing in bad weather at Boston, the aeroplane was damaged beyond repair. 8 November 1977, España, 50th Anniversary of IBERIA, ‘Rohrbach Ro-VIII Roland and McDonnell Douglas DC10-30’ (Edifil nr. 2448).

Here's my latest first flight cover with a fine array of cachets. It was flown from Shanghai with China National Aviation Company (CNAC) and then transferred to the China Clipper service of Pan American Airways (FAM14) at Hong Kong. It was then flown on its long journey to San Francisco. Leaving Shanghai on 26th April 1937, it reached San Francisco on 4th May and took a further 3 days to Maplewood, New Jersey. It would be interesting to establish which type of aircraft flew the Shanghai-Hong Kong leg and also the San Francisco-New Jersey leg. CNAC apparently used Douglas DC2's (or DC3's), for internal flights, although other aircraft were in service. I think the Chinese PAA cachet is somewhat misleading as it shows an image of a clipper, which would only have been used for the Pacific leg of the journey. From the little information I have so far found about CNAC, it appears to have quite a history worth looking into including being 45% owned by Pan AM. CNAC utilized Douglas Dolphin and Sikorsky S-42/S-43 flying boats on the Shanghai-Hong Kong route. Chin Yun Gi (Sampan Annie) was in charge of Pan American's maritime fleet in Hong Kong. As for the letter on the San Francisco-New Jersey leg, my best guess for that time period was United Air Lines. Book Reference: Airlines of Pan American since 1927 by Gene Banning (2001)
