Hello all, this is my first visit to TSF in many many days. I've been preoccupied with work (and a big side project my wife has needed much help with). Stamps unfortunately lately have been relegated to the "when I get a chance" priority. My stamp room lately has basically been visited maybe every other day for as little as a few minutes only, sadly, but that hopefully may change soon. The best thing about stamps collecting (and the philatelic friends we all make) is there is always an abundance of patience. No true hobby should dictate or demand attention unnecessarily when other obligations suck up any free time one may have been used to spending on it. I even opened up some of my stamp album pages to make sure.....Yup, the stamps are all still there, waiting patiently for me! And TSF luckily has not disappeared either! In the meantime I have become a proud owner of the latest Brusden White catalogue of (Australian) Kangaroo stamps. Or more accurately known as The Australian Commonwealth Specialist's Catalogue Kangaroos, sixth edition (2017).A few years ago I took the plunge and delved into "flyspecking" some of the Kangaroo issues I have been putting aside--basically searching for varieties, plate flaws etc. in what little spare time I had. Needless to say it has been an endeavor much neglected but perhaps having the ultimate "authority" in book form, at least, might spur me to wade deeper into the swirling rushing waves of philatelic phun from down under. Now to search TSF for some relevant threads.....when my workload lightens somewhat. Stay save y'all :-) Jim from Georgia

brightonpete That is the model I have. I guess I am not getting the same results as you. In thinking about it, I do not like how it washes out light areas.

angoreYou can always adjust the lighting, or turn it off altogether & use a flashlight, or natural light instead. It can be very bright, but tone it down and the results will look better.

I have a request to make for all members who post in this amazing topic. The request is made after comments made privately by others. As this topic is a general one, one that many will not look back on and will not be used in a search function, I kindly request that images, diagrams, latest buys etc be posted in their relevant topics rather than here where they will most likely be lost forever. Which would be a shame because there are some nice and interesting additions here. By all means write about them but then send others to the rightful venue where it will be viewed and enjoyed for a long time (we hope). Back in early June, LB1 made the above post here in this well-read thread. I will admit to being one of the people who made private comments to him on this subject. I would like to make a comment now about a separate, but related subject: best practices for image posting here on the Forum. I am not going to single out any one member, as I have truthfully noticed a few who have a tendency to do this, but I feel compelled to mention it now, as it seems to be happening with greater frequency recently. As LB1 mentioned in his earlier post, one of the valuable aspects of TSF is that it is a good resource for finding stamp-related information. One of the key elements as a resource is that information needs to be searchable. What I have noticed recently is that images are being posted, but either there is no text in the post at all, or the accompanying text will be something like: "This is self-explanatory" or "It's obvious what this is" or something similar. The unfortunate problem with this is that without any caption for the image giving a description or country & catalogue number, etc., the item will not show up in a search. In some cases, there is even descriptive information that would make a good caption contained in the image. While that is a fine thing in its own way, because it is part of the image, it is still not searchable. So, when posting images of all of these great items that you want to share (and there are many excellent ones out there!), please add a caption that contains a description with some keywords in it, so that if someone wanted to find that item on our site, or even in a general web search, it will come up. If we want our Forum to be not just friendly, but also "user friendly", I think that making this small adjustment to our image posting practices will really enhance the resource value of the site. My thanks to all for your consideration of this request. P.S. I realize that this thread may not be the best location for this information, but I have chosen to post it here initially since I know that this is one of the most popular threads on the Forum, and I want to reach as many members as possible. I will probably re-post this info in a subject appropriate thread as well, sometime in the next day or so. Thanks again.

It was another hot one yesterday. I spend some time creating a want list for GB as I try to take advantage of the time invested in inventorying my collection in Stamp Manage inventory program. The program has a "Need to complete" function so if you have it inventoried it will identify what is missing from the database so you can put it in a want collection. It took more time than I thought it should and in the process since I had to then remove varieties that I did not want plus a few errors that I had to correct.
All my Machins (spares) on Vario pages will be moved to some 102 cards I plan to move all spares to there and this will free up some Vario pages for worldwide spares.
My motto has been when in a lull organize something!

Spent the evening tonight sorting down several thousand US cut squares, into basic types. Will require much more attention at some point, to sort them down to individual die and paper types. Another winter project?

Been working on my Ohio Sales Tax Stamp pages again this week. But got in a few new books yesterday along with a great stockbook, which I will show contents soon. The books are a 1960 Hubbard catalog which I have been trying to find for some time now and 3 1980's The State Revenuer magazines as a bonus. Not a bad day.
Everyone have a great day.
Mike.

That Hubbard catalog is a nice piece of philatelic history -- congratulations. I can't recall if you already have its successor, the Malehorn & Dean. I'm still waiting for the next revision of the State Revenue catalog -- it seems as if it has been in work for some time now.

I have been updating Scott values for my Finland collection from 2017 to 2021. (see my post in the Finland thread). Not many changes so far, but I did find a few errors *I* made. (I will post results [with highlights as applicable] as I get them in each country's thread.) I am 2/3 way through.

To that end I will be sending out packets to Beryllium Guy , coastwatcher , brightonpete and cjoprey in the coming days which were from the Giveaways I ran at the wrong time (Coronavirus) !! Well not really wrong, just unfortunate. Anyway, they will all be on their way shortly together with a couple of promised packets for daveg28 and angore . Recently I have had little time for stamps and I have been disappointed once again with the Postal Services. I sent 7 packets out as long ago as a month+ and it appears only two have arrived which is very sad. I had made some test postings beforehand with 'dummy' contents and they all arrived. It will be pretty heartbreaking if all those nice stamps have disappeared. To show how annoying it is, I posted TWO registered packets to Beryllium Guy at the same time. One arrived very quickly while the other has gone AWOL !! Will the world ever get back to normal ? Londonbus1

I have only been able to pop on TSF occasionally. Summer is my work time and it’s been a crazy gardening season. Too many new gardeners out there who are trying to grow veggies or plant a flower bed. I have little time tof stamping.
i have been able to get a few countries catalogued and added to inventory : Monaco, Liechtenstein, SAN Marino, Andorra, and some Canada. I have up to 1970 done for Luxembourg. All of these had been mounted and placed in albums. So much more to go.
Have made a few purchases on Ebay. I have been finding good postal service. Things are arriving from US within a reasonable. Things coming from Europe are a bit slower but they get here. Things from Australia take over a month to get here.
I may not be posting I have been reading some amazing things on this forum. Getting bettered educated on many new areas. A big thank you to all who have kept me learning with great articles and superb photos. That’s why I am here.
HAPPY stamping and keep well.

I am working on Curacao (Netherlands Antilles). In one of the giveaways I received this year there were a number of Curacao stamps that will fill several spaces in what is still a meager collection but every little bit helps. My Netherlands collection is housed on Scott Specialty series pages and in one of the old green (leather-like) binders, 2-post. The pages are part 1, 1852-1948 and include spots for the Netherlands, Netherlands Indies, Netherlands Antilles and Surinam.

I've been dropping in on TSF several times a day, but have been remiss about posting an update.
A few days ago a nice folding camp table arrived at the house, and it has been conscripted as a "temporary" stamping table. No more stamping on the dining table for a while!
I've been working through mounting a nice collection of Colombian stamps that I won at auction a few weeks ago.
Today, a collection of PNG stamps showed up - I'm off to see what it holds right now!

Today i finished putting away the last "soaking" batch. I have France caught up (for the moment), and there's more Germany, Belgium, and Austria on pages to contend with. the Belgie is all in the cellophane wrapped clear mounts, so no hinges, but a bit tedious cutting them all open. Still waiting on one more item for my Yugolslav Government-in-Exile pages, which may be all of Yugoslavia i may collect - undecided, whether to try and "fill in the earlier issues" I don't really need another 'targeted area" My wife ha accused me of being a stamp hoarder!?! She obviously does nt understand my methodology. I've offered to show her how to scan, ID and post on E-bay... but she's resisting me

well, I keep saying "no more new collecting areas", and then I see something where I say "oooh, I like THAT". That happened this morning starting on where I was doing some editing on Colnect, and there were a few AUSTRALIAN ANTARCTIC TERRITORY stamps someone asked to make corrections in the listings. So I started looking.. on EBay and HipStamp. Saw an EBay listing for a MNH collection originally listed for $275, but seller had a 37% off sale for the month. I could not resist, and therefore, a new collecting area has been added to Bob's list.

The other day I did an exchange with someone on another online group and tried to arrange some stamps nicely on the cover. I'll have to upload a photo sometime soon. I also bought a couple more sheets of the First Moon Landing stamps the other day, fearing that they would be discontinued after the 51st anniversary passed. (To my pleasant surprise they haven't been pulled yet.)
On a somewhat related note, I am currently scanning all the letters (covers and actual notes) that I sent to my partner during the 3.5 months that we were apart due to pandemic restrictions. I want to have them in digital form in case anything should happen to them. This project is what got me into stamp collecting, as I needed stamps to send him mail and discovered the wide variety available.

Hello “whatcha been stampin’” gang!
I’ve been busy drumming up some packet trades for all of my packets and mountains of duplicates. I posted my trade blurb on a few sites - I’ll let you know which ones generated the most responses. I’m still holding off on trading by catalog value until the mail system returns to pre-Covid service levels. Posted a new, simplified trade offer here.
And ... we’re back to Construction mode. Month EIGHT on this bathroom remodel - ugh!

Before the stamp chat call, I was doing tests on scanning album pages to decide resolution and jpg quality. The results will go into a PDF as country file Since I typically print on demand since I use Steiner pages, I will merge blank Steiner page PDFs from the master deck to create a complete album. I still need to deciding how to file, file names, page numbers, etc.
One motivation was to use as a quick when looking at collections on ebay.

I get a phone call today from a gentlemen who identifies himself as a member of the local philateic society (of which I am a member), and he got my contact info from him. An acquaintance of his wife, her husband had passed away. He was a stamp collector and this gentlemen had taken on the task of dissolving the collection. The widow was not looking for big pay-outs, just a donation made in her husband's name. He called me as among my interests is France. A stock book of new and used, mainly circa 1930-1970. A few photo's, nothing really stands out and I can see lots of common stamps. It turns out he lives 5 minutes away! I relay my observations, but add it's hard to know from a couple of photos, so maybe there is a gem in the sand. He say's I can come and take the album home look through it and decide.
There were some other stock books, but from the sound of things common post war Germany, and a small "box" of mixed /unsorted, some still on paper......
Looking through, a fair amount of post WWII mint stamps, thopugh nothing high CV, and not a graet deal to fill holes or upgrade (that I can see)... but admittedly, I'm focued in later 1800's and very early 1900's at the moment.
Still, I find myself self thinking after my passing, what will my wife do with the stamps? will she at least be treated fairly?(I would like to think so)... so I am now pondering a donation (likely generous based on the stamps)... but maybe a little bit of paying karma forward?

I too am wondering what might happen to my collection. It isn't very big, but still... no one I know collects stamps. A donation to the local stamp club and/or the RPSC will probably be what I choose to do.

Today was a slow day from the working remotely, so I got a lot stamp sorting done!! I thought Austria was all done but found a double sided stock page, and 3 more stock pages of Germany...then all I have remaining is A WHOLE LOT OF FRANCE to put away.... and I am trying very hard to not go on Decampe, HipStamp, or EBay. As long as I have unsorted stamps around I have a hard time focusing on page building and mounting... because.... well, what if discover a very different shade, or a superb cancellation and no place on the page for it.... do-overs are never fun. or it's latent OCD..... but, when the day comes to go into page mode, I will also need to get rid of the remainder of the study lots not used. Some will be E-Bay, others will be give-aways, or selective trades. My wife may be retiring if the school district insists on re-opening before this pandemic is under control, and I almost have her convinced she can scan, list and manage e-Bay! I think she may agree just to retire! Can't say I blame her.

Just kind of in the dumps right now, not sure if the company I've worked for the past 26 years is going to survive the rest of the year or not. But still, I have stamps to lift me up a bit. Tonight I was able to add 25 stamps to my small, but growing, Austrian revenue pages. I have some more on the way to me right now that will add some interest to the same pages, with a batch still on document pieces (love them).
Also, recently won a couple lots of philatelic reference books in an "off the beaten path" online auction. Looks like there will be some great books in these lots, at a surprisingly cheap price too. Can't beat that. Should be here next week I'm guessing.
