Out & About in San DiegoGreetings, all! This is just a short post to explain my low level of participation in the recent days. My wife and I are on a short trip to San Diego this week, returning home tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon. This past weekend, I did a major clearing of my desk, which felt good to get done before our little trip. It was a combination of both philatelic and non-philatelic items that had piled up while I was preoccupied with other things. Before leaving I sent off a small package to Stan ( stainlessb ) for some upcoming color shade work. I am also working with Hugh ( hdm1950 ) on a little transaction that I should be able to finish up tomorrow when I get home. Sorry for the delay, Hugh! Ok, that’s it for now. Stay stampy, all!

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

I had no sooner finished picking 3 stock books my antique dealer friend had dropped off a few weeks ago and he texted me that he was dropping off another box of stuff today. The curb side swap had this assortment. A quick look suggests there will be very little staying with me. Once again there is several hundred dollars face value worth of Canada 1980’s era mint that I no longer want or need. A bit more interesting is that well over half the material is mint 1970-90 Korea. It is newer than I collect. Based on stationary found it appears there was a connection with the Consulate General office here in Toronto. Too bad there are not more Forum members close by that might be interested in this stuff.

I finished emptying out my to be mounted binder by dispersing them to the country specific album. Most are still on Vario pages though because they are beyond my year range (when I print out an album page).

I thought I was done but found some more. I have my first French Morocco stamps on pages. Interestingly, Scott and SG have French Morocco but Michel/Yvert just list under Morocco so if you go to Colnect there is no French Morocco.

I've had a bit of time for stamps the last few days as the dreaded 'Long Covid' has come back to haunt me again ! Suffering my 5th bout of Flu this winter.......except it's spring now so really not fair. It has meant a bit less babysitting and the way I feel all I want to do is sit and drink tea and water. Energy levels are almost zero !! But playing with stamps has helped relieve the pain and discomfort. My armoured car stamps arrived in two days from Tel Aviv, something of a record. Still no news from the other lots missing since October 7th. Looking forward to another sleepless night and a few more hours sorting stamp mess. Wonderful. Londonbus1

All, Just started going thru' another recent auction lot purchase. A quantity of UK Benham First Day covers, ( 1980- through to 2002) full set of issued stamps on the covers and most of the 270 have special postmarks. Aware there will be a few duplicates to what I already have in the collection, but interestingly on a quick check of the first album a different postmark on one cover to to that already in the collection. I've always been curious about the Minkus worldwide albums and have considered purchasing the early parts from Amos on a number of occasions. So far I've held off because I'm not sure that's where I want to focus my efforts. I actually enjoy collecting anything and everything, so using an album feels wrong for me. That said, about a month or so ago I picked up a 1965 copy of the Minkus Master. Per the seller it was listed as new, but so far I've run into a hundred or so stamps hinged into it. The seller didn't know if it was complete, so I've been slowly working through it, counting the spaces on each page. I haven't noticed any glaring omissions so far. Once I am finished, I plan to develop a "virtual" Minkus Master collection, using my duplicates as the source material at least initially. Yesterday I finished going through the album. I'm happy to say it appears complete, based on both page and space counts as shown on the outer dust jacket for the binder. My final tally of spaces is 60,071 with 2,268 blank spaces. The other spaces typically contain an illustration and/or a Minkus catalog number.
My next step will be to begin making a checklist. Initially I'll be sticking with the Minkus numbers. Not sure at this point how worthwhile it would be to add a crosswalk to Scott numbers. I could see the value if I were looking to actively fill spaces by purchasing individual stamps, but that point is likely a long way off. I have a 1965 set of Minkus WW catalogs plus an early 1970s US catalog. Those should allow me to figure out what goes where.

No stamping for me as I have been away for three weeks. Getting anxious to see what has arrived in the meantime. It might be just like Christmas as I tend not to remember what I have bought. So all might be a surprise. Then it will be deciding what task will be the newest priority.

Last week-end, WE had the spring Barnafil'24. Bought a few items and chat a little. On Sunday, I went to the Sunday stamp market and bought just a cover. Last week, a friend brought me three interesting covers with cinderellas on them (already show) as well as some other items. Some weeks ago, I bought many Greenland, Norway and Iceland used stamps. A good addition to my collection of this area.

I continue picking through old collections everyday filling lots of spots with rather common stamps. While doing this I keep trying to decide what direction to go with another stamping issue. To get expertization or not? I have progressed to the point of filling out the forms for a Nova Scotia cover and for a rare trial colour specimen overprint. I have even called a highly respected provider of the service located close to me here in Toronto to see if I can drop the items off rather than mail them. The service is pricey, 70.00 CDN for the cover (covers are hard to value but catalogues in the 4 figure range) and 50.00 CDN for the single stamp (it has a catalogue value of 500.00 and bought well below 10% of that). That money would buy some nice stamps . I think my mind is made up, that I will do nothing unless I decide it is time to sell my collection.

I finally finished picking the large Senior Statesman World Stamp Album last night so a few hours ago I posted it for sale on Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace for a modest price. Within 15 minutes I had a buyer and 30 minutes later the young guy (30's is young to me) showed up on his bicycle and pedaled away with his heavy purchase in his backpack. Now on to the next group of stock books to pick through.

Over the past couple weeks I've been replacing the original US pages I printed with Steiner pages, and adding duplicate pages so I can have mint stamps on one page and used stamps on the other.

Today my library grew significantly, courtesy of recent purchases from Michel and a seller on Amazon. All volumes are Michel catalogues.
From Amazon:
Eastern Europe 2014/2015 Central America 2019 Scandinavia 2021/2022
From Michel:
Caribbean Islands 2015/2016 Part 1 (A-J) Caribbean Islands 2015/2016 Part 2 (K-Z) South Asia 2016 Iberian Peninsula 2022 Baltics and Finland 2022/2023 Benelux 2022/2023 British Isles 2022/2023
Over the weekend I hope to decide on the design for the database I'll use to track my collection. Right now part of me wants to do it properly, but the more practical side wants something that isn't so elaborate it's a pain to maintain. We'll see who wins.

Looking in a chocolate box and came across a bundle of these 1960's era approval envelopes. This sure brings back memories of early collecting days where a lot of my paper route money went. Rarely did any of the approvals go back. These are early enough that they are before the flooding of the market of CTO's from the eastern block countries. my

Alas, none of the material on my wishlist magically fell from the pages and I will need to pare the initial list done to wants and then 'needs'.
Plenty of items to choose from, but will need to consult with the accountant...
Have fun and happy collecting!

hdm1950 There must have been a lot of labor involved in packaging and marking the glassines to send them out. These were not prepared in low wage third world country.

hdm1950....The glassines are great, memories of a time past. it wasn't so long ago that I was a collector of Glassine envelopes with dealer notation or other advertising. Still got them, some have stamps. Nice to see. Not much with stamps the last couple of days as I try to arrange my UK trip and get ready for Passover tonight and all week. The cooking went well and the table is full of it waiting to load in the car !! Some good news is that mail from the UK is getting through here with the experimental sending of an eBay item. It arrived !! The seller is well pleased. Been trying fit in a stamp event or two during July in the UK but it seems York might just be out of reach. With not much in the way of stamp fairs around in our vicinity, it means the Glasgow Stamp Shop will be the only Philatelic offering ! But I heard it's a good shop and made the news recently. I don't know of any other stamp shops in Scotland or Buckinghamshire........just loads of antique and 2nd hand shops ! Still searching....... Londonbus1

Back Home After a Week Away Maybe a Little Stamping Today....Greetings, stampers far and wide! I hope this post finds you all happy and doing as well as you can be. I have been in Tennessee on business travel from Sunday through Thursday, and I am still a bit in recovery mode after all that. The good news: before leaving on the trip, I was able to clear my desk, which included a fair amount of stamps that I had pulled out. Thanks to an unexpected and amazing gift from my dear friend René ( renden), I was inspired to get my classic Canada collection organized. I have some nice early Canada, but I just never took the time to organize and display them properly. That is now underway, and I should be able to post some images soon. I also received a nice eBay purchase of some official stamps from Hawaii, which has completed my set. The less-than-good news: I made two other eBay purchases from sellers in Europe back in mid-March, and those have still not arrived. One from the UK had international tracking on it, and it was received in Los Angeles on 1st April, but no movement since then. The seller told me that he thinks it's being held by U.S. Customs for further inspection. Hmmmm....... Ah well, not much I can do about those items that haven't arrived. I just hope they will get here in the not-too-distant future. Still trying to decide if I will have any time for stamps today, as this weekend is an alumni open house at a nearby college where my wife went to school, and she really wants us to attend some events over there. I could opt out, but as I have been gone all week, I should probably agree to go. Stay stampy, all!
