heat wave here, so out early this morning to run errands and water garden and inside most of the rest of day- over 100 right now and the next two days are expected to be hotter- They are predicting Sunday could hit 100 bu 10 in the morning... (no golf for me this week!) as long as the power doesn't go out lots of time for stamps and music!
Today I got all of the Portugal stamps I had received in a stock book offering onto Vario's somewhat sorted (Ceres with initials at the bottom have all been checked for perforations- a bit of a variety... - as to paper types , thats for another time after I get a bit more "learned" about such things.
Tomorrows task is to get the unsorted France stamps from the last soaking put away and maybe soak another batch.... (after an early morning trip to the grocery store 9as soon as they open)
and then back to making pages!

I picked up my new Brother laser printer this morning. Set up couldn't be any easier. Now to figure out how to add pages for double sided printing. It does a great job, but the cardstock curled up at both ends. I have a Brother printer and it works well. Card stock does curl but a slight back bend and it s easy to print the reverse (once you remember which way to insert the page (mine is already printed side up and top of page towards opening end of paper drawer... Still a mystery to me how it actually processes the paper through- but it works!

They mentioned to use the tray bypass for cardstock, but I wasn't happy with the results. You have to change how the page is inserted for the backside as well. It is different than the tray. I'll stick with using the tray! As the paper comes out, I place something on top of it to flatten it. Most of the curl goes away.

My desk is just not big enough. Stuff continually gets piled on to it, and just seems to sit there forever. I really need the room to work, so I'll have to take time out of real stamping and clear all these stamps off the desk! 13 minutes before I can have a coffee... Can I clear it in 13 minutes? With the vacuum cleaner exhaust, sure... but not a good idea!
I hope everyone has a good weekend!

Off & On Rainy, Stampy Saturday in OxfordGreetings, fellow stampers, far and wide! After some pretty mild weather earlier this week, we had a heavy rain last night and it's continuing off and on today. Luckily, it slowed down long enough for me to get out and about for a little while without getting too wet. Things happening: - Picked up an item for Vince (stanley64 ) and mailed it from the PO this morning
- Received a wonderful lot of classic Germany from Roland (cara ) in a trade; need to post more in subject-specific threads about that
- Also received some nice eBay & Hip Stamp items to fill gaps in my Hong Kong and Denmark collections
- Did a bit of TSF moderating this morning, renaming a thread and moving some posts into it
- Went back to the Danish West Indies thread and added all the catalogue number captions to my previous posts there
Next up: like Peter ( brightonpete ), my stamp desk has become cluttered over the past few weeks, so I really need to go through what's there and get things put where they belong. But for the moment, I am more in the mood to do some soaking, as I have an intriguing lot of stuck-together material from Dave ( daveg28 ) that will have to be soaked in order to see what's really there. I think that will be the next thing, and then I will work on the desk-clearing job a bit later. Have a good weekend, everyone, whether stampy or otherwise!

A busy day as a morning session morphed into pm!
1.todays Mail brought a Samoa Express 1877 1/-, good used, which had I negotiated at a discount from a UK Dealer. (I now have 9 of the 10 plate positions, and wonder when no. 10 will turn up.) 2.I placed 4 bids with a New Zealand Auction house for 13 July. Expensive, so bid a bit lower than estimate and may get lucky. 3.Sold 6 items on ebay which took a bit of time to pack and address to Virginia , Belgium , Germany N. Ireland and Oxford. 4.Replied to an offer on an unsold ebay lot which may or may not turn into a local sale and possible new stamp contact,
5.Squeezed in a coffee session with my neighbour who is also a stamp man. 6.Took a phone call from cousin in S Africa who has just received the birthday card I sent 3 weeks ago (arrived the day before His birthday, which is an improvement of previous mailings to S Africa which have taken 2 months !)
Now a late lunch beckons

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

This morning my wife and I spent a lot of time in the kitchen. She put together a dish called Jangjorim which is pan-fried shishito peppers which are usually combined with pan-fried whole garlic and cooked beef in a soy sauce pickle but she decided to skip the beef and just enjoy the shishito peppers and garlic on their own which is just as delicious.
I baked. I made wild black cap (black raspberry) muffins which are my second batch in the past week and a loaf of banana bread. I also am marinating thin sliced tofu in a soy sauce, lime, sriracha marinade which will be baked in the oven to be eaten on it's own or as a crumble in dishes like salads or even vegan tacos.
Meanwhile, I am about to get started with sorting and cataloging some spanish stamps which I have been soaking off paper. This was a ziploc bag of on-paper stamps that I had sorted out of a gifted accumulation from several years ago. Many of these duplicates will go into the Mystery Circuit packet to replace what I have taken for myself.

My stamping this weekend took a couple of different directions -- first, last night I worked on my neglected SAAR collection. Added a few new semipostals (Sc B9-11 and B75), and also completed the President Heuss set without the F (Sc 263-282).
Second, I had been thinking for a while about adding Mt. Athos to my collection. 3 sets should (hopefully) be coming my way from a Greek seller via HipStamp.

Finished a few custom pages for Gabon as part of my long project re: French Colonies/protectorates in Africa. Preparing for Ubangi-Charri and from now on I am not doing the Countries' classics in their entirety.......too big an investment and repetition. Have shifted to Postal History with as many samples as I can find.

Preparing for Ubangi-Charri and from now on I am not doing the Countries' classics in their entirety.......too big an investment and repetition. Have shifted to Postal History with as many samples as I can find. Hello Rene, I completely agree. I've almost completed mainstream Cameroun. From 1916 to when it became Autonomous in 1956 I have every stamp except 4; the Spitfire Overprints from 1940 (YT 236-239). However; the earlier Cameroun stamps from 1915 and 1916, YT 38-66 the Military Occupation stamps, are made out of unobtanium, I can neither afford nor even find these stamps, I doubt that I ever will, which quickly diminishes my interest in trying to complete some countries.
That also brings up the slippery slope of what does "Completion" mean? In reality, there are very few countries that most of us will ever "Complete". Why, because there are many, many variations of the stamps listed in the various catalogues and not all of the possible varieties are even listed. God knows Scott is out of its element when it gets into in-depth coverage for countries outside of the US. Then there's the consideration of what comprises "Complete"? Just commemoratives and Regular Issues? What about Airmails, Postage Due, Revenues and Official Stamps? Should I include Coils? Cut Squares, Full envelopes, Stationery? What about Plate numbers or tabs? Will my collection be incomplete if I skip them? Should it include First Day of Issue covers for every stamp? First Flights? Packet Mail? Cinderella's? Etc. Etc. Etc.
There are a lot of decisions to be made when choosing a country to collect. It's a good idea to have a comprehensive view of a countries entire Postal activity for one to have an idea of what they want to collect and then decide what's even possible within the financial reach and interests of the collector?
Having said this, I decided long ago to collect only the Issues that appeal to me and ignore any idea of completion because it's just unrealistic.

Thanks Rob REL1948 - you were more eloquent than me in explaining my thoughts since I decided to do all French Colonies/protectorates in Africa (Continent) so that would eliminate Madagascar (for now !!) and do it in my native "french" - Appreciate your philosophy René just posted in GABON thread

Rene, I really like your Gabon approach. Just providing spaces for the stamps you have and including a description works very well.
Trying to assemble all of the stamps in the French African colonies long sets is challenging and at times can be quite frustrating. Take Chad for example, it took me 2 years to find 4 of the stamps in the first series (inexpensive low values). Recently, I've seen those same elusive stamps on eBay several times. It can be really frustrating if you find yourself in a crunch for a display or article you're working on and the key stamps are unavailable or lost in the mail somewhere.

ROB REL1948 The only way I could have the series was to buy it as a lot on Delcampe and I was the only bidder LOL !! René btw, having one's name at the bottom is the greatest way to know our member friends - some have been posting for years and I still do not have their name in memory (my problem with names !!)

Yes, I agree with your comments about René's ( renden ) pages, Rob. I also like what he has done with them. Another way to address the issue of unwanted open spaces is to use stock pages, like I have been doing. I have been very happy since I switched away from pre-printed album pages to the stock sheets, which give me lots of flexibility. The one downside is the lack of any description on the page with the stamps, which can be included on a custom-printed one. I am not overly fond of sticking little bits of paper into the stock pages, but it may eventually come to that. I know I could also do a separate sheet opposite from the stock page, with written info on it. I am still trying to decide on that....

I totally agree Beryllium Guy I also am in the process of using stock sheets instead of pre-printed album pages, but I also have my collection online which I can access at anytime with my mobile phone or PC it not only gives me full information of each individual stamp including all the big catalogues reference numbers , variant's etc. but also what stamps I am trying to collect and there values.

In the past few days I have been looking through my US envelopes. I don't have many (unfortunately), but the following envelope caught my eye. The franking is certainly nothing special, but I really liked the picture on the postcard. Unfortunately, the colors don't really come out on the scan. I immediately had to think of JeffS , even though there is not a single orange to be seen. cara

There always is more, or there always is better! More pragmatically, completion means I cannot/will not afford more of whatever they are. Then it's time to move on.
