Following up on a small ad in the local pet shop window notice board, two of us called round expecting to find a bundle of mundane FDCs and a couple of junior albums.
Instead we were overwhelmed with a virtual shop of stockbooks, albums, bundles of coves boxes of covers , more albums , an absolute hoard of stuff that would take years to sort and identify realistically. Probably £10,000 accumulated purchases the guy had been hoovering up from auctions and eBay.
We were bamboozled and confused after an hour and a half unable to work out what his intentions were for his advert and what he wanted to do with his stuff. On the one hand he seemed he wanted to sell but on the other he was asking if we had stuff he could buy from us . All very confusing, there was good material but some of the items he was excited about we felt he had paid over the odds.
It was exhausting but we go back in a couple of days when he promises to have some 40-50: organised lots out of the chaos.

Graham ( radiocruncher ), having very recently sorted/catalogued/mounted my modest Machin collection (see posts in machin sub board), I can tell you that unfortunately sorting them into values is probably only 10% of the battle - each step is cathartic though - have fun! Kevin in London Hi Kevin I know it’s going to take ages to try and work out all the variations. I have 100’s of the NVI’s so I’m hoping I will get the majority of them. I’ve just downloaded some specialised Machin pages as well so that should help. I will check out your posts in the Machin sub board. Regards Graham

Hi René
It’s a big task but for some sadistic reason unknown to me this is what I enjoy the most. Endless searching, comparing shades, papers, bands etc. Then soaking off. Great fun.

One of my purchases from my last APS order was a set of counter coils of the 1967-1970 definitives. In the description, a CP (Campbell Paterson) catalogue was mentioned. Hmmm, I'd like to get that as both Scott's and to a lesser extent SG is somewhat sparse in details and varieties etc.
Ah, it is available, for a paltry $275NZ! Wow, and here I thought Michel was pricey. But it would be a good purchase! Now to hem & haw over whether or not to buy it! This after deciding to cut back on purchases to fill the coffers!
Decisions, decisions!

I’ve just looked that up. What a great catalogue and with loose leaf updates. I suppose like anything you get what you pay for. The decision is yours though. Graham

I have Campbell Paterson and it is worth the investment if you really want to go deep into New Zealand

Three more Samoa Express items making their way to me next week , the 1/- I bought on eBay and two from Mowbray’s auction in New Zealand , a State 1. Penny and a sixpence. I had another three bids but was beaten to the hammer.,
Still 3 out of six is not bad.

Well it’s been a hot but busy day here. I managed to find a very nice desk on Facebook marketplace and picked it up at 10pm last might. I’ve spent most of the day putting it back together and moving the living room around to accommodate it. The seller had a lazy tape measure! I now have a dedicated stamp area (and also retro Commodore computers)

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Sunny Saturday in OxfordHello again, fellow stampers! As Graham ( radiocruncher ) mentioned in his earlier post, we have been having real summer weather here in England lately: warm and sunny with clear blue skies. As this sort of weather does not happen here that often, and doesn't last very long when it does happen, it means that when it arrives, we need to take advantage of it. So, we will probably do a long walk today, and we may even stop off at a pub with a nice garden for a cool pint on our way back home. Stamp-wise, I finished soaking all of the stuck-together mint stamps from Dave ( daveg28 ), which are mainly classic Germany and Danzig, with a couple of other odds and ends in the mix. I have removed the damaged stamps and have sorted the survivors by watermark (Germany: lozenges vs. network). I will go through those today to see if any will go into the collection or if they are mainly duplicates. Initial impression is that they are mainly duplicates. The Danzig will be combined with a trade lot received from Terri ( philatelia ) some time ago, and I think that there will be more of interest there. But my Danzig is not as well organized as my Germany, so that will be a bit longer term project, but I may have an opportunity to get that done, too.... The big news is that we are going to attempt another trip! We will start by heading into London next Friday, so that I will have another visit to the Charing Cross Collectors' Market on Saturday. From there, we will head up to Scotland for two weeks of travel around the country. Since our last excursion was cut short, we are now really looking forward to this one. We know, of course, that COVID rules could change at any time, but we will "give it a go" and see how far we can make it. With a bit of luck, we hope to stay safe and make it all the way through. I have even made plans for a meet-up with Alex ( vikingeck ), which will be one of the highlights of the trip for me. Stay stampy, all!

Last night I decided to tip out a small packet of mystery stamps that I got in an auction lot. I expected it to be a few different countries but how wrong I was. Each little pile is a different country. 90% seem to be older stamps as well. I am struggling with what appears to be some Chinese stamps though. The biggest pile is early USA and there are lots of obscure countries in there.

Finished my Vatican City stamps inventory, at least for now (I may find more !!): 341 stamps with a CV of $444.52US Have no interest in completing this lot - I might put it at auction later if interest shows up ! I can print the inventory in 2 minutes if need be. René btw I did do a Vatican giveaway (small) of dups - trips etc) in the past, won by dgdecker

sorted a "pile" of France stamps into the Vario pages.... and I'm still not done, but many of the remaining are modern (>1956-1970 ) which I do not believe I will retain. And I can see by todays efforts there are some of the earlier definitive issues I need to finish and clear out the remaining 'study lots" either that or start another binder... and I have no shelf space

Great posting Graham ( radiocruncher) and I am curious to know how to took the image; I could use something similar for my own efforts as seen here - Fluorescent Papers - Locomotive SeriesAs for the UV lamp, paper fluorescence and the 4d Wildings, here are a couple of links you may find of interest:
In the meantime and all be it belated, welcome to TSF...
Happy collecting!

Hi stanley64 and thanks for the comments. I took the picture using my mobile phone with a long wave handheld UV light in total darkness. Thanks for those links. Very informative. I have been reading the Stanley Gibbons GB Specialised catalogue vol. 3 but it is a bit dated so maybe I ought to upgrade to the latest version which I believe is in colour. There’s mention of chalky paper and a silver test which I’ve yet to investigate. And thanks for the warm welcome All the best Graham

I’d think the differences in fluorescence may be due to soaking times. The longer stamps are soaked, the less the fluorescence. Just my opinion though...

I’d think the differences in fluorescence may be due to soaking times. The longer stamps are soaked, the less the fluorescence. Just my opinion though... I’ve heard that before. I don’t think this is the case with mine though as I soaked them off in one whole batch so they all had equal soaking, drying and blotting time. I’ve heard it mentioned before that detergent doesn’t do them any good as well. These were soaked off in Luke warm tap water.

In those days, optical brightening agents were not well controlled in paper from suppliers and not often noted in paper specs. Intentional coatings like tagging that were applied after printing were far more susceptible to issues due to soaking. These definitives usually had long print runs so paper variability was a factor.
