A slow stamp day today- outside chores getting ready for fall planting- Did manage to complete a France rRes Cross page (1957 - and I'm going in no particular order)- sorted and put a way a few more stamps and scanned some things I thought some friends might be interested in, but so far, nothing unique, so set off for the 3000 post giveaway (getting closer every day!)
at best, the next two days will have little more than windows of time to stamp- they say a chance of rain- I can't wait- colder temps, shorter days, rasny weather and a fire in the fireplace! Perfect stamping season!

Did a big stamp soaking batch today, with the help of one my sons who always enjoys that part. I had a backlog of many months of envelopes from stamp dealers and TSF friends. I ended up with five planks worth once the stamps were all spread out to dry. By the way, please note that the ink on some of Beryllium Guy 's COGH triangle Cinderellas can bleed! This was particularly true of the blue ones.

Thanks for letting me know about that, Xavier ( hrdoktorx). I am sorry to hear it, though, and hope that it didn’t cause damage to anything else. Now that you have said it, I may run some tests at home. To be honest, I never thought that anyone would bother to soak them, so I am flattered that you thought that they were worth the effort!

Beryllium Guy- just thought of one thing, that there is a type of paper that is waterproof, I have seen it once at the paper mart when I went looking for acid free paper, I suppose it must be available on Amazon etc? Just a thought.

I bought a lot of about 500 French stamps a little bit ago and finally decided to start sorting the modern issues. They’re very colorful, and I don’t mind them, but stamps from the same set having different numeral placement is infuriating. I decided to leave the decimals unsorted for now.

Thanks for letting me know about that, Xavier ( hrdoktorx ). I am sorry to hear it, though, and hope that it didn’t cause damage to anything else. No worries. When I do the soaking with my son, he's always in a hurry to separate the stamps from the paper, so they don't stay in the water very long. I actually have to temper his enthusiasm sometimes to make sure he is not going to fast and separating se-tenant pieces (or stamps from their tabs), or folding them before they are laid down to dry.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

So I have had a bag of stamps on paper sitting on the desk for months so I figured today to do a soaking. How is it that what looks like maybe 50-60 pieces turns into hundreds when they hit the water? I see a give away in my future. Nothing special, mostly contemporary Great Britain, but lots of Machins for a variety hunter.

More sorting today, mainly just "bulk" lots without much close attention- For now I need to get them off my desk and into the Varios before i resume taking a closer look and trying to organize into envelopes the stamps that I have completed pages (and if not an upgrade, then into envelopes as my 4" binder with Varios is about to fall apart (I have duct taped the cover where it is starting to separate at the fold....)
It is slow going, but I see no short cuts here
It was a lovely fall weekend here on the US west coast- the fires are still burning but now seem to be more consuming what fuel was missed and not expanding too much- October is supposedly the 'peak" of the fire season, so I'm hopeful things do not get too much more crazy- so many have lost the homes and most all belongings
Stay safe everyone!

Beryllium Guy - just thought of one thing, that there is a type of paper that is waterproof, I have seen it once at the paper mart when I went looking for acid free paper, I suppose it must be available on Amazon etc? Just a thought. Thanks for your comment, Nikhil. I have not investigated waterproof paper up until now. I may consider it, but I noticed from a quick search that it is a bit pricey. When I first made the COGH Triangle labels, I tested the concept on ordinary white paper and after I adjusted the images a bit, I then used old album pages, which have a nice ivory color to them, and I figured that they might also be acid free, although that is not a guarantee, of course. It may be that the one that Xavier ( hrdoktorx) soaked was one of those early ones printed on ordinary paper. Based on this feedback, I will find other uses for those, and I will not put them on mailings to other members in the future. I printed up some new labels this weekend on some high-quality, ivory-colored stock, and I will stick a couple of those in water when I next soak a batch to see how they do. Thanks for your comments, in any case.

DIY Stamp Projects over the Weekend More Travel Soon!Hello again, everyone: Sorry for my general lack of making posts over the weekend, but I was busy getting things organized and ready to mail. I was behind on the Three-Sided Giveaway lots, but those have now been packaged up and taken to the Post Office headed to Steve ( tomiseksj), Vince ( stanley64), and Werner ( salentin). I hope you will all be pleased with them, and that they arrive soon and in good condition. I also sent out a couple of long overdue packets, one to Xavier ( hrdoktorx) with some Nigerian stamps that I had added to one of René's auctions months ago, along with some bonus items that I hope he will like, and the other to Jon ( blaamand) with a couple of items that I also promised to him many months ago. Sorry for the delay on those, guys. Hopefully, it's a case of better late than never, and I hope that they will arrive in good condition for you both. As I mentioned at the top, I have some travel coming up, as we leave later this week first for Southampton, and then on to the Isle of Wight. With that in mind, I spent a day this past weekend preparing some covers for special posting while on that trip. I read somewhere that there is a postbox at Osborne House, Queen Victoria's old home on the island, and that if you mail something from there, the item will get a special cancel. I hope it is true, as I invested more time than I had planned in preparing those envelopes.... we shall see! I also organized a few, recent small acquisitions from Denmark, Danish West Indies, Hong Kong, and Southern Nigeria. OK, back to work for now. Stay stampy, all!

Aha, Beryllium Guy! You print your own labels. I could do that too! But what do you use as gum/glue/paste? I am certain that most of what I have seen would not hold up to mailing!
I'm just a dummy with no clue!

Yes, Peter ( brightonpete ), I have been doing my own Cinderella labels on our new home printer. The COGH Triangle labels have turned out pretty well, but some others I tried recently didn't look as good, so I probably won't be doing them again. As for how I stick them to the envelopes, I use glue-stick. Perhaps not the greatest choice, but it seems to work pretty well, and I noted that at the Oxford PO today that the clerks use glue-stick when the gum on stamps doesn't completely do the job, so perhaps it's not such a poor choice after all. I was pleased to see that Stan ( stainlessb ) was able to soak a couple of the labels off of an envelope I sent him, so I guess glue-stick is water soluble? Frankly, I wasn't really sure.

I wrote a post earlier about receiving not only 6 new stamps today but also a message from the customs. The most important part is of course what I am working with right now, the new additions. They were all drug related stamps, 4 in anti-drug (narcotics) category, 2 in anti-smoking. The Chile stamp is interesting, it is a stamp recognizing a new drug law, a law which doesnt prohibit drug consumption. In Norway and Sweden this is very much a hot topic right now with a lot of debate and also a failed attempt in Norway to decriminalize consumption. A day with new stamps is a good day - I am happy! Now time to update my website with these new stamps!

I’ve at long last sorted through the Mystery packet, restocked it from my albums and sent it in its way. It’s now time to start organising the ones I’ve kept. See this thread for more info: thestampforum.boards.net/post/128792/thread . I’ve removed all the German stamps to 1945 from my albums and have started mounting them in album pages. I have huge gaps though. I spent some time researching and found some great pages from www.germanstamps.net. I’ve printed a selection of pages out and they look great. Here’s the only page I have a full set of attached.

I am anticipating the arrival on Thursday of my recent purchases from the USA,over 12lbs in weight. There is still no prospect of mail service to Ecuador,so I will have to continue this method of purchasing new material. It is frustrating, but also very enjoyable when I eventually receive a shipment. This is just part of my purchases..............

Today I got another delivery, three Panama anti-drug stamps I bought on Delcampe sept 12th. The stamps are probably not interesting to you guys, but once again I cant help to think about the delivery. This time the customs office wasnt worried though. I bought 3 "drug stamps" for EUR 1.17 and the seller sends an envelope with Filatelia cancel AND used a stamp in the drug area, the Italian anti-alcoholism stamp from 1987. I am intrigued. Did the seller put in the extra time not only to bother with the Filatelia cancel but also with finding a drug related stamp? I think so, I am very impressed by the sellers effort.

Tonight's night off work was mostly spent with Colnect, updating new issues. Also have worked with a contributor to flesh out listings for Austrian POs in Turkey and Crete, and another editor adding listings for Hong Kong (esp Postage Dues).
Picked up a couple new catalogues (well two new and one set of old). Will post images in the What's In Your Library thread. Got the 2021 AFA Denmark catalog (covers Denmark, Faroes and Greenland). Holding off on the AFA Denmark Specialized for now, last edition was 2016 and the catalog is usually updated every 6-8 years so figured best to wait til new edition comes out
Also picked up the 2021 edition of Phila-India's India catalogue. It's the main Indian-produced stamp catalogue on the market today, and while it is still much more basic compared to say Gibbons India catalogue, it does give insight on how Indian collectors collect their country.
Also picked up on the cheap copies of Yang's Catalogues for People's Republic of China. Picked up both the 1930-1950 Liberated Area issues catalog and the post-1949 main PRC catalog. Yang appears now to be out of business, as the latest edition I have found for the PRC catalog is 2019 (and for Hong Kong 2015).

Completed Zimbabwe this week - identified, mounted, and entered into Colnect. I think I'll be doing some of my smaller countries this week as I only have a few nights to work on them. I'm headed to Kansas City on Friday to meet my daughter and see the Holocaust exhibit that they have at the train station.

Not much stamping going on tonight. I won two *bay auction lots of Canadian stamps that might start arriving at the end of the week. In the meantime, another (non-philatelic) auction win pertinent to the book I am writing spent two weeks in the purgatory known as Northampton, Mass. Today it made its way to New Jersey, where my friends at the local PO told me the latest hurricane blew the roof off the distribution center. To top it off, Steam refuses to connect with my account, so there will be no playing of Wingspan or Transport Fever 2 tonight. Good thing I stocked up on Chilean wine tonight.

I didn't sleep and my brain was at about Brussels sprout level today, so I went through an abandoned Romania collection I'd picked up at a stamp show back when stamp shows were a thing. And I carefully avoided anything with the barest hint of inscrutable watermarks. A few pages in, I got discouraged and bored. If I was missing a common stamp, so was the adopted collection. If my copy was a placeholder, so was that one's. I was about to put it aside and, I dunno, go wash dishes or vacuum something; and then I found three stamps in a Carol II series that I didn't have, and I filled a page! I hope that by filling this page I'm guaranteed a spot in the highest pantheon of legendary philatelists. After all, this set is crucial to any distinguished and top-rankin' Romania collection, don't you agree? But even if I'm not destined to be a legend, I like filling pages, just like when I was a mere boy. And, as a bonus ... that hat! I mean, what's up with that thing? Whose idea was it? Where can I get one??

Quiet day on all fronts. Rearranged a couple of items in my Tobacco exhibit, tidied my office upstairs . Closed my albums and file boxes, and shut down the computer for a week or two .I have to get by with my iPad and no printer . Knee replacement surgery scheduled for Friday morning and I don’t expect to handle the staircase in the immediate future.
Sun shining and light breeze on the Autumnal Equinox,! Some leaves have already fallen so Checked the garden and lifted begonias etc for winter storage. Early this year but we may get a frost before I am fit again. Picked the last pound or two of plums to cook and freeze.

Cooler weather has arrived for a while as it is fall.
I have settled into a routine...stamps in the morning and non-philatelic reading in the afternoon plus a few household chores during the day such as fixing the deck on the lawn mower (required drilling a new hole to re-attach the wheel bracket to the deck).
I finished mounting all the issues from Nigeria and in the process I discovered an issue with my album page numbering. In the process as a good philatelic citizen, I made additions to StampManage and submitted an addition to Colnect.
I also found a way to deal with some of the approval books on Stamporama. A few good sellers there do not add catalog numbers so you have to look them up yourself. Thjs can be expect for something selling for USD$0.08? Since I collect worldwide there is no way I can remember what I need.
To check these books, I have the following active: SOR website, StampManage (where I keep my inventory), Colnect website. For Colnect, I select the country then select to show all images, The images are displayed in chronological order and then visually match the SOR. This does not work for the countries with lots of issues (do not know cut off point but over 1000).
This is usually faster than scanning through StampManage and StampManage is not as complete with images as Colnect. The sellers I frequent usually have the issues in a quasi-chronological order. It helps to have a 3 display setup so no need to minimize and maximize programs.

Hey Alex vikingeck - I just read about your coming knee surgery. While I have not had it, a friend has, and it went very well. I saw him at the show this weekend and he is quite chipper about it. I am still "recovering" from 4 days on my feet judging etc., and have not yet had time to view your smoking posts here. (on anyone else's) I look forward to settling in at my desktop and giving it a good exam. Best wishes, JeffS
