June 14 -- Flag DayOn this date in 1777, the Continental Congress adopted a resolution establishing the flag of the newly formed United States: President Wilson (1916) and President Coolidge (1927) issued proclamations asking that June 14th be observed as National Flag Day; however, it wasn't until August 3, 1949 that the Congress approved the national observance and President Truman signed it into law. (The above stamp depicting the American flag and mountains is from the Flags of Our Nation series and was issued on April 16, 2010. It is a serpentine die cut 11 vertical self-adhesive coil stamp identified by Scott as 4303.)

Very nice Steve tomiseksj ! Canadians participated in this Apollo 11 mission and all Canada FDC have been sold by Canada Post....remaining ones are in the hands of Ebay sellers who want to sell them at 10-11 X the C$2.50 price. Canada Post never figured their printing #s. So I went through my dad's First day issues and found 2 interesting pieces, one of which is presently in direction of California Beryllium Guy - Also bought today 6 FDC involving the Apollo 11 mission and others for $15US - I love FDCs and going through these for the past 3 day - finally found a bargain in the US from a woman selling her dad's FDCs and won the auction !!! I do not bid often on Eb.......and the covers were going at a ridiculous price. Canada Post has only printed 7,000 FDCs of the Apollo Anniversary - it missed a chance to sell 14,000......and Canada post is owned by my taxes !!! Have good weekend everyone !

6th August 1944 Destruction of the Lion Bridge, Arles, FranceFirst of all, I apologize for being a week late with this post. I had the date in mind, but it slipped by without my making the planned post, so I am doing it now, one week late--sorry. Once again, in line with the 75th anniversary of major events in World War II here in France, I wanted to remember this date, which I mentioned in my article in the last TSF Newsletter. It was on this date 75 years ago that the Lion Bridge in Arles was destroyed by Allied bombing to prevent the Axis Forces from using it, and at the same time the "Yellow House", famous as a residence of Vincent Van Gogh and memorialized in one of his paintings, was also inadvertently destroyed in the same bombing. Period postcard, postmarked in 1905, showing the Lion Bridge in Arles. The metal "box bridge" construction was considered unusual, even in its time. A photo of the remains of the Lion Bridge abutments taken in June 2019, shortly after the article appeared in the TSF Newsletter. I think that this photo does a better job of capturing what is left of the structure than the one that appeared in the Newsletter, so I wanted to share it here. Recent photo of a surviving steel railway box bridge that connects Avignon and Villeneuve, similar to what the Lion Bridge originally looked like. Note the lack of ornamentation at the abutment.
