This morning, while making my coffee, I asked Alexa "What happened today in history?" Alexa answered "King George III wrote in his journal on July 4th 1776 "nothing happened today." Not sure how Alexa confused November 12th with the 4th of July, but she did make me laugh!

Thanks for your Cary Grant post, coastwatcher! I am also a big Cary Grant fan, although my personal all-time favorite actor is Humphrey Bogart. In any case, I just wanted to mention that I recently re-watched one of my favorite Cary Grant movies titled The Bishop's Wife, a 1947 Samuel Goldwyn production. My wife and I enjoy watching old Christmas movies during the holiday season, and this one is up near the top of our annual list. Anyway, thanks again for your great post, and happy birthday to Cary!

April 23, 1616 - William Shakespeare dies. Shakespeare has a place in postal history because, in 1964, he became the first commoner ever to be featured on a British stamp. Scott #s 402-406 issued in 1964 in Britain:

May 1, 1840 - Though not to be used until May 6, Great Britain introduces the world’s first postage stamp, the Penny Black. The brainchild of Sir Rowland Hill, it would revolutionize how mail was sent around the world.

In any case, I just wanted to mention that I recently re-watched one of my favorite Cary Grant movies titled The Bishop's Wife, a 1947 Samuel Goldwyn production. Beryllium Guy, It’s been awhile since you posted this, but I thought I’d tell you that I ordered a copy of “The Bishop’s Wife” on eBay today after seeing your post when reading back through this thread. I’ve got a pretty good collection of DVDs covering the Golden Age of Hollywood, but, for some reason, I had never gotten this one. Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for reminding me of it! As a fellow Cary Grant fan, you might like to know that I also ordered a copy of “That Touch of Mink” with Grant and Doris Day.

( wish the Mystic hingeless (not that it was hingeless but printed on better paper and numbers outside frame) was available when I moved to Mystic.
The Bishop's Wife is on our Christmas watch plus we also watch the remake with Denzel Washington.

It was seen as a "Day of Infamy!" and a German atrocity .The unarmed passenger liner LUSITANIA was torpedoed off the Irish coast on 7 May 1915,by a German U-Boat. Women and children lost their lives, and the presence of some neutral American passengers amongst the casualties was instrumental in persuading America to enter the WW1 on the Allied side

8th May 1945 WWII Victory in Europe Day 75th Anniversary (2020) Sorry to report that I could not find any stamps in my current holdings that honor VE Day, but I am sure that there must be some members who have suitable material. Xavier ( hrdoktorx) or Alex ( vikingeck) or Michael ( Londonbus1) or others would have something I imagine. So, to put an image into this post, below is a photo of the front page of the Cleveland Press, my hometown newspaper marking this date in history. I have a framed copy of this front page hanging in my stamp room back in the US, but I don't even have a photo of that, so I found this one on the Internet. I will try to upgrade this at some point.
