1st September 1853 Day of Issue of the World's First Triangle Postage StampBased on some of my recent posts and stamping activities, you must all know by now that I am smitten with the Cape of Good Hope triangle stamps, and I have been doing a bit of research on them. I wasn't sure if these stamps were the first triangles or not, but at least according to Wikipedia, it seems that they are: I always felt that there was something special about these iconic stamps, and now it seems that it may be in part because they were the first triangles. If anyone knows of an earlier triangle stamp, I am happy to be set straight on that. So, to celebrate this day, I encourage everyone to post an image of a triangle stamp today, either in this thread or in any subject appropriate thread. Cape of Good Hope, Sc1 1-Penny Brick Red on Bluish Paper issued in 1853

More Musings on Early Triangular StampsMany thanks to Jon ( blaamand ) for your kind comments as always, and to others such as cursus , anglobob , ameis33 , and daniel , who participated in "Triangle Stamp Day" by posting some images of other triangle stamps. After thinking about it more, while it seems clear that the Wikipedia assertion that the Cape of Good Hope stamps of 1853 were the first triangle postage stamps, I wondered which stamps were next? The best possibility I could come up with is Newfoundland, Sc3 3-pence green issued in 1857, just 4 years after the COGH. I also note the similarities in design between this one from Newfoundland and its COGH predecessors. I don't have the Newfoundland Sc3 to show, but I have its first cousin, a stamp which is virtually identical in appearance: Newfoundland, Sc11A 3-Pence Green issued in 1860 If anyone can think of any other early triangle issues which might contend for the number two spot after COGH, I would love to hear about it.... I tried to think about France or French Colonies, and I thought of early Obock, but their first triangle was Sc44A issued in 1893, 40 years after the COGH.

More Musings on Early Triangular Stamps Beryllium Guy there's a great little book which I have entitled Triangular Philatelics by Chris Green (krause publications, ISBN 9780873415880) which also covers Cinderellas. According to Green, these are the countries that issued triangular postage stamps in the 19th century (note that for 1894, Obock, Liberia and Somali Coast, I don't have precise issue dates): Cape of Good Hope 1853 1855 Newfoundland 1857 1860 Cape of Good Hope 1861 1863 Colombia 1865 1869 Obock 1893 1894 Liberia 1894 imperforate and rouletted 1894 Official overprints on above Somali Coast 1894 1894

29th September Feast Day of the Archangel Gabriel Patron Saint of Stamp CollectingWell, I must admit that before today I had never heard about this tradition, so many thanks to Joan ( cursus ) for posting about it in two other threads. This is an important day for stamp collectors, indeed. So, Joan's posts led me to do a little research. From Wikipedia: Austria, ScB329, 4+1-Shilling Maroon Semi-Postal issued for Stamp Day 1973 The depiction is Gabriel by Austrian sculptor Lorenz Luchsperger from 1490.

In Mediaeval times Michaelmas was one of the four "Quarter Days" These were roughly 3months apart and had significance as the dates for payment of rents, loans, and debts and also the dates on which servants' employment periods began or ended . Nowadays much less significant but still referred to in some legal documents regarding rentals.
Lady Day (25 March) Midsummer Day (24 June) Michaelmas (29 September) Christmas (25 December)
Scotland, to be different, had our quarter days more aligned to the old Celtic calendar.

On October 28th 1848, it was built the first railway of the Iberian peninsula. it went between the Catalan cities of Barcelona and Mataró (about 30 km). 150 years later, special postmarks were used in all stations of the route. On the pms you can see a 1948 replica of the original 1848 English-built "Mataró" locomotive (now, at Vilanova i la Geltrú Railway Museum).

November 9th, 1970: "Un chêne s'est brisé, il n'a pas plié, il entre dans l'Histoire" ("An oak has broken, he did not bend, he enters history"). That's how the death of Général Charles de Gaulle was announced in France 50 years ago today. Many countries then promptly issued memorial issues, like this example from Mauritania:

11th November 1918 End of World War IHere in the UK, today is known as "Remembrance Day", and in the US, it is called "Veterans' Day". We commemorate this date in history to mark the official end of World War I. From Wikipedia: 11:00 Paris time passed a couple of hours ago now, but we should pause and take a moment to remember the history behind this date and time, and to think about all those who have served their countries, and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice. I would like to encourage all members to post something in honor of the end of WWI or for those who served their countries. Although they were not allowed to form a separate corps (like Czechs) many Democracy-loving Catalans enlisted the French army and fought alonside their camarades on the Western front. The pro-allied feeling was majorutary among Catalans, while Spanish (with theit king Alfonso) sided with Central Empires. Cinderella, issued by the Catalan Comittee pro-Allies, remembring Verdun. I remember when I read an article int the newspaper: "seventy years of the canons of August" and times has passed so fast that we have oveertaken 100 years of both the beginning and the end of the War... From 2014 to 2018 I always tried to read something about what those guys were doing in the trenches exactly 100 years from that date. It is amazyng how young they were...

14th November 1973 Wedding of Princess Anne & Mark PhillipsOn this date 47 years ago, there was a Royal Wedding here in the UK. Per Wikipedia: Sadly, the couple separated in 1989 and eventually divorced in 1992, and Princess Anne remarried shortly thereafter. Great Britain, Sc707, 3½-pence Violet & Silver Commemorative Stamp This example was postmarked on 16-Nov-1973 in Bedford, England.

On February 25th 1975, there was issued a stamp showing the portrait of the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí i Cornet (Reus/Riudoms, 1852 - Barcelona, 1926) alongside one of his best known works: the Casa Milà, on Barcelona's Passeig de Gràcia, that we have ever called "la Pedrera" (The quarry), because of its shape.
For this reason, two stamp exhibitions were held: one ("Gaudí's week") in a boot located just in front of la Pedrera, with a postmark showing Gaudi´s portrait.
And another one ("Gaudí's Exhibitin") at Catalonia and Balearic Islands Architecture Achademy, showing another well known Gaudí's work: the Bassilica de la Sagrada Familia
Both covers, slightly different, were privately produced by "Alfil" (Eliseu Alert) printing works, that give a special texture. On the back of the covers there was a text about Gaudí by the head of Gaudí Dpt. of Catalonia's University.
All texts were written on Spanish language, as it was compulsory by franco's dictatorship, that we were still undergoing
I was on my early collecting years, and I can remember going to both exhibitions and buying the covers and some cards. They were not cheap at all for a 15 years student pocket.
On the Architecture Achademy, there was also used a very nicely engraved cover, the offiicial ones, showing La Pedrera. There were two versions spanish and Catalan. I recall, being surprised as seeing our language for the first time on my 15 years, used on a "official" print.

Somewhat oudated: FDC of the Casa Vicens (1883) the first work by Antoni Gaudí. It's in Gràcia (Barcelona). The iron-cast garden's wall, has the shape of the leave of the only palm tree indigenous to Catalonia (Chamaerops humilis). I pass quite often near it.

On April 23rd 1994, Spanish PO issued a stamp devoted to the Catalan writer Joseo Pla (1897-1981), who died 13 years ago that day . In coincidence with the issue of the stamp it was held in Girona (North of Catalonia) a National Catalan Stamp Exhibition.

15th May 1921 Founding of the Royal British LegionToday marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Royal British Legion (RBL). From Wikipedia: There have been some stamps issued to honor the RBL, and I encourage members to post anything that you might have along these lines. To get the ball rolling, here is a very nice-looking set issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the RBL: Jersey, Sc53-56, complete set of 4, issued in 1971 for the 50th Anniversary of the British Legion
