15th May 1960 Launch of Sputnik-4Today marks the 60th anniversary of the launch of the first Russian satellite that was used to simulate manned spaceflight. It was a very important step in the "space race" of the 1960s, and was commemorated on the stamp shown below. I welcome other members to post any other material related to this historic event. kosmo , do you have any souvenirs or memorabilia from Russia? 29th May 1790 230th Anniversary of Rhode Island's Ratification of the U.S. ConstitutionOn this date in 1790, Rhode Island became the last of the original 13 colonies to ratify the United States Constitution. Rhode Island apparently delayed their ratification until the Bill of Rights was passed. In any case, today marks an important day in US history, and I invite any TSF members with any philatelic items to honor Rhode Island to post them here. United States, Sc 2348 25-cent multi-colored stamp issued in 1990

2nd June 1953 Coronation of Queen Elizabeth IIYesterday marked the 67th anniversary of the coronation of QEII. I apologize for missing this by a day, but I somehow got it into my mind that it was 3rd June.... not sure how I managed to do that. Anyway, from Wikipedia: Sampling of stamps from the British Commonwealth omnibus issue to mark the Coronation of QEII

A big thanks to Chris Beryllium Guy for his Post on the Queen's Coronation as seen with stamps. Here is Canada's stamp issued 1953, Jun 1 for the commemoration of Queen Elizabeth II 's June 2 Coronation. Both examples show a MNH-VF and a Used slightly postmarked in Quebec Province René

Here's the beautiful Blackprint set of the 1953 Coronation set from Great Britain. Given away in the Penrose Annual in December of that year, in a full sheet. Scarce and lovely !! The sheet in the image above is not mine (sadly). The issue is scarce but I do have the set. Londonbus1.......God Save the Queen !

I just looked again at the post by renden and have come to the conclusion that the image of the Queen is not very flattering !! Something Canada repeated in 2012 with the Diamond Jubilee issue !! Off to crawl into my corner...........

nbstamper The sheet was inserted as a gift into the Penrose Annual of 1954. The Annual was a Graphic Arts/Printing book published annually from 1895. 1954 was issue No.48 and had a Gold dust cover. The sheet was printed by Harrison & Sons. Each label is backprinted 'Reproduction Only. No Philatelic or Postal Value' !! I wonder if they realised what the prices might be 50 years down the line. Would make a mockery of the backprint !! One of my favourite British Cinderella issues. You can see the backprint on page 2 here: thestampforum.boards.net/thread/1094/forgeries-facsimiles-reproductions-blackprints?page=2

P.S. I have just found a sheet for sale. This is a rare occasion. The price is a little over £100. The last time I bid on one (one of two occasions I found them) I was outbid at £85. I am tempted but the pot is dry. Yikes !!!!!!

14th July 1789 Bastille Day in FranceAlthough I am no longer living in France, I remember well my days there, so I want to be sure to recognize this most important of French holidays. I don't have a lot of material related to the French Revolution or the Bastille, but one of my favorite items is this Cinderella from the Tourist Sites of France series, this example in blue. I acquired this stamp during my time in Aix, and I am pretty sure that this copy now resides with LB1 ( Londonbus1 ) in Israel. I hope that others will post something today to commemorate this important day. Vive la France! La Place de la Bastille: Poster stamp from the 1930s and photo taken on trip to Paris in Aug-2019 This is a monument which was erected in the location where the Bastille prison once stood. It is named "La Colonne de Juillet" (the July Column), and it was officially inaugurated in 1840.

Did the Marines use mottled color fatigues at Guadalcanal? I thought they were using single color fatigues until around the Tarawa landing.

Thanks to coastwatcher for your post today. It is a significant day in US Marine Corps history! Interesting question, Al ( angore )! Like tomiseksj and mikeclevenger , I am also a USMC veteran, so I tried to check on your point. I didn't spend a lot of time on it, but it appears that the Marines did not start wearing camouflage uniforms until 1943. Just as an aside, and to the best of my knowledge, the word "fatigues" is considered an Army term. In the Marine Corps, working/fighting uniforms were always referred to as "utilities". I do recall from WWII photos that initially, Marines wore camouflage helmet covers, but still had the solid color olive-drab green uniforms. During my time in the Marine Corps, the solid green uniforms were referred to as "sateens". In looking at the image on the stamp, it is difficult for me to tell if the uniforms shown are camouflage or just solid OD green with some shadowing on them. Whatever the answer, it is an interesting historical point!

The Battle of the Guadalcanal has been an interest area for me for many years as well as the War in the Pacific as well. I am an Army brat so mostly know the Army terms.

In looking at the image on the stamp, it is difficult for me to tell if the uniforms shown are camouflage or just solid OD green with some shadowing on them. Whatever the answer, it is an interesting historical point! The Marines , in general, wore utilities, some with camouflage, or netting helmet covers, throughout the entire Island hopping campaign in the Pacific campaign in WWII. But, the Marine Raider & Parachute Regiments wore camouflage. So, you will see pictures of both utilities and camouflage uniforms being worn in WWII by Marines. "Utilities" was the normal uniform worn by the majority of Marines in the Pacific. They say it actually blended in pretty good on the islands, once the original sheen was wore off, which probably too several minutes on Guadalcanal. LOL.
I am not quite as old as you, so I wore camouflage when I was in the Marine Corps (1981-89). I think they phased out the sateens, a few years before me. I still like the old "Woodland" pattern camo, even though they say the new digital colors blend in better. The new uniforms just don't look right to me.
Have a great day.

Did the Marines use mottled color fatigues at Guadalcanal? I thought they were using single color fatigues until around the Tarawa landing. The sage green (or olive drab) uniform was a solid color made of herring-bone twill cotton -- it's first use in combat was on Guadalcanal. This excerpt was taken from Henry I. Shaw's " FIRST OFFENSIVE: The Marine Campaign for Guadalcanal," which was part of the Marines in World War II Commemorative Series. The complete text of that work is found on here the National Park Service's website.
