1st July 1961 Birthday of Diana, Princess of WalesToday marks what would have been the 60th birthday for Princess Di, and I just thought it would be nice to mark the occasion with a post in this thread. She was remembered today here in the UK, as she is depicted in a new statue at Kensington Palace in London, which was unveiled by her two sons, Princes William and Harry. I like to remember her in the stamps, so I am posting one below. If other members have stamps of Diana that they like, today would be a fine day to honour her memory. Great Britain, Sc1793, 26-Pence Multi-colored Issue depicting Diana wearing a tiara (1 of a set of 4)

Barcelona, October 7th 1971 (50 years today). Issue commemorating the 400 years of Lepanto Battle between the fleets of the "Holy Leage" (Pope, Venice, Genoa, Savoy and Spain) and the Turkish Empire. The Christian victory, stopped the advance of Turks on the Central and Western Mediterranean. The Leage's flagship was buit at Barcelona's shipyard and the effective comander was the Catalan sailor Lluís de Requesens. A replica of the said ship is on Barcelona's Sea Museum (on the Old Shipyard).

6th February 1952 Accession to the Throne of Queen Elizabeth IIToday marks the 70th anniversary (jubilee) for Queen Elizabeth II, which is the longest for any British monarch. Edit: I have now returned from weekend travel, so I would like to add an image of one my favorite stamps depicting the future queen, while she was still Princess Elizabeth. This particular one was issued as part of a set on 1st December 1950. Little did anyone know at the time, in a little over a year from the time this stamp was issued, Elizabeth would ascend to the throne. Malta, Sc231, 1-Shilling Gray Black, issued to commemorate the visit of Princess Elizabeth to Malta

15th April 1947 U.S. Major League Baseball: Jackie Robinson Breaks the Modern Color BarrierThis date marks the 75th anniversary of the debut of Jackie Robinson as the first African-American player in the US major leagues in the modern era. This event turned out to be not only an important one in baseball history, but also in civil rights and social history. Jackie Robinson has now been featured on several stamps. The one below is my personal favorite. Any other members with Jackie Robinson stamps are encouraged to post them here to honor this anniversary. United States, Sc3408a, 33-Cent Multi-colored Commemorative Issue

April 29, 2022Today is the 150th anniversary of Arbor Day in the U.S. -- a day intended to encourage the planting of trees which lowers the carbon footprint, National Arbor day is celebrated on the last Friday in April; however, many states observe Arbor Day at different times during the year based upon the best tree planting times in their areas. On April 22, 1932, the U.S. issued this 2 cent, carmine rose, perf. 11x10.5, rotary press stamp (Scott 717). The stamp depicts a boy and girl planting a tree.

2nd June 1953 Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II Celebration of Platinum Jubilee, 70 YearsToday marked the 69th anniversary of the coronation of QEII, and it was also the kick-off for her 70th Jubilee celebrations here in the UK. I am very glad to have the chance to be here at this moment in history. I realize that this post is rather late in the day here, but I would encourage any members who want to join in celebrating the reign of QEII to post something in this thread over the course of the next few days. Long live the Queen! Sampling of stamps from the British Commonwealth omnibus issue to mark the Coronation of QEII

hope I'm not doubling up - haven't seen these four so fingers crossed - these I believe are the very first Commemorative issues of our current monarch's reign. Edmund Dulac's full frontal on the 1s. 3d. is about as regal as images can get - shame he wasn't allowed to design the other three - but then I'm biased toward Dulac no doubt because of his far greater fame as a book illustrator - real mouth watering stuff. The other three all carry Dorothy Wilding's head profile only, the main designs created by .......... the 2.1/2d. from E. Fuller .......... the 4d. from E. Goaman ............. and for the 1s. 6d. it's M. Farrar-Bell. SG Nos. are 161 - 164. Unfortunately, we don't issue stamps like this any more.

October 15th, 1963: The last French military forces leave Tunisia. This is known and celebrated as "Evacuation Day" in Tunisia and marks the final step in their quest for independence. Here it is remembered 20 years later on a stamp from the recent Tunisia lot I acquired.

22nd November 1963 Assassination of US President John F. KennedyToday marks the 60th anniversary of this sad event. I was very young at the time, but I remember the aftermath in particular. Many stamps have been issued by countries all over the world after JFK's death. I encourage any members who have JFK material to feel free to post your favorite examples here in this thread. USA, Sc1246, 5-cent blue gray commemorative stamp, issued on 29-May-1964.

January 28th, 1369: The remains of St. Thomas Aquinus are brought to their final resting place at the Convent of the Jacobins in Toulouse (France). Some Catholic traditions also make his birth date be 800 years ago today, in 1224, but this is not confirmed. He is shown here on three stamps from French Andorra, Italy, and West Germany.

This date in history ... On August 1, 1894 Japan and China each issued an official declaration of of war. Known as the first China-Japan war, over the next nine months the two countries fought in Korea, Manchuria and Taiwan. Wikipedia has a pretty good overview of events. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Sino-Japanese_WarIn the end, following Japanese advances on all fronts, the Treaty of Shinmonoseki brought hostilities to an end. China recognized the independence of Korea and ceded the Liaodong Peninsula, Taiwan and Penghu islands to Japan - along with 200 million taels of silver. Russia, Germany and France, however, intervened and brokered a new deal in which Japan gave up Liaodong for an additional 30 million taels of silver from the Qing government. Korea became a protectorate of Japan after the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05) and the occupied Korea was annexed by Japan in 1910. On August 1, 1895, Japan issued four stamps on the one year anniversary of the declaration of war featuring two top military leaders. Stamps:Japan - Series: Victory in Chinese-Japanese War Issued: August 1, 1895 General Yoshihisa Kitashirakawa2s Rose Sc. 87 5s Deep ultramarine Sc. 88 Field Marshall Akihito Arisugawa2s Rose Sc. 89 5s Deep ultramarine Sc. 90
