Here is a question for the Canadian experts regarding these Newfoundland stamps. The stamp on the right is about two millimeters shorter than the one on the left. The PRINTED area of the stamps are identical, but the paper surrounding them differ. I’m wondering if this has to do with the machine used to perforate the sheets. If the perforator is a GRID of pins, the stamps would be consistent in size throughout the sheet. If the perforations are done ROW BY ROW, then there can be variation in the size of the stamps. Do any of our Canadian experts know if that is a plausible explanation for the variation in size or are there other possible causes? Thanks in advance for sharing your expertise!

I think that we probably discouraged a potential new member. We went into very technical terms that will discourage any new members. Have you noticed that she has not respond to any of our comments? To Zipper zipper, the answer to your question is #61. #80 as per Unitrade catalogue was released in 1898 and was Yellow Green versus #61 deep Green released in 1897.

Christmas has come early for me with these gifts to me that arrived today from Vance Auctions. I have bid on several of these items multiple times over the years and always coming up short so it was a bit of a happy surprise to see I filled these holes all at once. The February 7, 1911 John Guy Issue engraved perf. 14 set(Unitrade 98-103) has evaded me completely for years. I was surprised I have never come across even 1 from the set over the past. This set is mint and lightly hinged. The .12 Queen Victoria is a used Unitrade 29 brown. This stamp and Unitrade 28 continue to confuse me and this one may be a duplicate. I had one that I felt certain was a 28 pale red brown but not so sure now. The June 9, 1919 Alcock and Brown flight stamp is a fine mint NH Unitrade C2a with no comma after POST The last and the stamp I really wanted was the July 24, 1933 Bablo Flight Unitrade C18 mint NH. This one came with a 2021 Greene Foundation Certificate & 2 different guarantee b/s's. Forgeries are a concern with this particular stamp but I feel comfortable with the certification. This comes close to filling all I plan to add to my Newfoundland collection. I have several of the early imperf stamps but they are so tricky with forgeries that I no longer even look at the offerings in auction.

Very happy with this acquisition - I truly love Newfie Stamps and its History of our Country - that Province (slow to join Canada) was issuing some great stamps and I have my collection (as many have) and I miss (again) the presence of our expert on this, WERT (departed as everyone knows).. Good show !! René

hdm1950 - great looking condition overall. Not sure about the 12-c Victoria at the right edge. That is a light cancel mark. I am more frustrated that I may have bought a stamp I did not need but it was not pricey and I can probably move it on eBay. I will check again in day light JeffS

Another arrival today is this used copy of the Unitrade #5. As I have mentioned before I believe, I tend to stay clear of the Newfoundland imperfs due to too many forgeries. I had confidence in the source for this one and when compared to a forgery site I feel comfortable it is genuine. 4 clear margins would have been better but still a nice example.

The other items in the auction lots were these 2 used Newfoundland imperfs. The 8 pence (Unitrade 8) is very lightly cancelled with rich colour and 4 good margins. The 5 pence (Unitrade 19) has closer margins but still a very nice example. As someone who had been staying clear on the imperfs from Newfoundland I find now I am cautiosly going there. It is a matter of trusting the source.

I have been spending some time looking through my Newfoundland collection this afternoon. The 1910 John Guy Issue has never been my favourite set. The set is lithographed and looks washed out. The added stamps are perf varieties. The most interesting stamp in the set is the 6c Lord Bacon due to the backward 'Z'. They issued a correction as Unitrade 92A that I see I am missing so I guess I better start a hunt for it. The backward 'Z' (Unitrade 92) has a much higher catalogue value.

Newfoundland had so many nice stamps and sets. I particularly like this 1923 pictorial set. The only way it could have been nicer would be if they were bigger so one could see the images better.

I am wishing this lovely block of 4 Newfoundland Sealing Fleet (Unitrade 197) was still on a cover. The cancel is faint but it is a REGISTERED ST. JOHN’S N.F. dated 1936. I thought of posting this in the new thread of blocks and multiples but it really belongs here.

Very nice block, Hugh ( hdm1950 ), thanks for sharing. In response to your comment, you should feel free to post this same image in the Blocks & Multiples thread if you like. There is nothing against posting the same material in more than one thread, as long as it fits in both places, and this item clearly does. Anyway, thanks again for sharing.

These 1921 Airmail overprint stamps have many varieties. The one on the left is a mint lightly hinged Unitrade C3 that recently arrived. The one on the right I had marked in my album as a C3 b due to the period after the 1921. It is mint never hinged. Once placed side my side it was obvious that the spacing between Air and Mail was different. Back to my old catalogue and discovered it was actually a c3 iii. Originally I was only interested in the with or without period variation. Now I am thinking I should go farther. This is how we collectors get drawn down into rabbit holes.
