Hi Zipper
Your post left a lot of questions unanswered.. Just posting pictures without a question leaves your post high and dry. Maybe your title should have read something like this..
1 - What Scott number or N.S.S.C. number is this pair of NFLD stamps..?? 2 - Are these a common or slightly rare stamps..? 3 - Are there varieties in these stamps..? 4 - Etc, etc,
I could and others could answer questions for you.
Just saying Zipper. Have a good day buddy. Robert

1497 was when John Cabot discovered Newfoundland. It coincided with Queen Victoria's 60th anniversary of the ascension to the throne.

Robert ( WERT), You'll find that there are a number of threads on the Forum that display the stamps of a country/province/territory solely for the purpose of displaying those stamps. In such cases, we ask that some text be included in these posts to aid in search discovery and to add context.

Agreed Steve..good point...Without questions, there may be things missed, Even if forum members just say ""What do you think about these stamps""...They will get feedback, at least from me.

1497 is just one date of significance in the history of Newfoundland of course. Another date of significance is 1610 the year King James VI & I granted a charter to James Guy to settle a colony in Newfoundland . The print on this isssue is full of flaws some of which get recognition in SG catalogue and no doubt in Unitrade . N FWFOUNDLAND with a scratch flaw and KING JAM RS on the second stamp and whole multitude of minor green specks I don't collect Newfoundland but these stamps are in my Tobacco & Anti smoking exhibit. " A COUNTERBLASTE TO TOBACCO" was King James' world's first anti smoking treatise in 1604 on moral and health grounds! The first pipe smoked in England are said to have been taken by Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Humphrey Gilbert (The 1st Governor of Newfoundland)

Hi Robert, the flaws on this King James are too numerous to list . It really is a poorly executed print. the two flaws I mention are in the catalogue but each of the lower pair has a white flaw that does not make my catalogue . Stamp3in the block has white blemish by the P In Postage and Stamp4 has an apostrophe between ONE and CENT. and every letter in NEWFOUNDLAND on stamp2 has a green spot. Alex

Here is n interesting Newfoundland cancel on a Scott 270 "Cabot Issue" stamp..
Ernest Harmon Air Force Base in June . 1948
Newfoundland was in debt and went through several delegations to determine whether the country would join Canada, remain under British rule or regain independence. The voting for the referendums occurred on June 3 . 1948.
The voting for the referendums to become part of Canada occurred on June 3 . 1948. The cancel (dual ring) on this Scott 270 is dated June 2. 1948. Which makes it possibly the the LRD (Last Recorded Date) of this cancel before it became “Ernest Harmon Air Force Base” in June . 1948

For those of you who have never seen a doctor blade (real name is ductor) flaw. Here is my N.S.S.C. R26 "inland revenue" stamp with a doctor blade under the caribou on the right stamp.
Robert
Here is a doctor blade cleaning the aluminum plate..With a nick in the late, it will leave a line on the printed sheet.

No matter who you are, no matter how much expertise you have, you can always add to the hobby of Stamp Collecting. I am a self proclaimed FLYSPECKER ..At times it can drive you crazy, but fun.
I have described flyspecking in 2 sentences.... 1- See what is there that should not be. 2 - See what is not there that should be.
That's how i flyspeck... I found a variety on the Scott 56, 57 and 58 Newfoundland stamps, a 130 years latter. (PP 95) I found it April 4, 2015, but took till 2019 for Unitrade and N.S.S.C to place it in their catalouges.
Here is a close up on the Scott 58, notice ...It is what i nick named "Dog Scratch" because it was a Newfoundland Dog" stamp. The angle of the stamp variety is approx. 23.57 degrees.
Here are the 3 stamps with the same variety (Scott 56,57 and 58)
Here is a block with the variety on bottom right stamp.
I am working on more potential varieties as we speak
Never give up flyspecking..Who knows, YOU may find the next lost variety.

not demonetized Newfoundland stamps
Between January 1, 1857 and June 24, 1947, hundreds of Newfoundland stamps were produced These stamps were used for letters until April 01,1949
They were not demonetized when Newfoundland left the British Colony to become part of Canada. What does demonetized mean.."deprive (a coin, stamp or precious metal) of its status". That means after Newfoundland entered Canada it could still use pre Canada Newfoundland stamps as payment on a letter just as though a Canadian stamp was used.
Below are 3 examples of Newfoundland stamps used after becoming part of Canada.
Here is a letter sent from Topsail in Conception Bay South, Newfoundland...It used a Canada Scott 479 and to make up the postal rate for that year, some one also put on a Newfoundland Scott 233. This cover was canceled April.24.1969 The Scott 233 (NFLD) has a perf.13.7 x 13.
Below is another cover With Canada Scott 401 with a Newfoundland Scott 255 to make up the postal requirement for the period. Cancel on this cover is from Topsail, Newfoundland canceled March.20.1968
Here is the last cover again from Topsail Newfoundland...Canceled November.19.1966 ..Is used 3 Newfoundland Scott 233.and a Canada Scott 392 with 2 hidden Canada Scott 337 under the Scott 392...Guess he needed to add more to make up the current postal rate. NFLD Scott 233 stamps are perf. 13.7 x 13.7 and the bottom right Scott 233 is perf. 14.1 x 14.1

A couple of Newfoundland questions arose today as I was going through the stamps I removed from an old collection. The first is below. I don't have a Unitrade catalog my Canadian friends, so bear with me. This is either Scott no. 44, deep green or Scott no. 45 green but I have nothing to compare it to. My first instinct is to call it no. 44, deep green. Am I wrong? Any help would be appreciated.
