Two of my favorites (faulty though they are). I love the seals. This one possibly has broken perf pins lower right.

Hello michael, The SG equivalent of Unitrade 15a is SG32b. Rob
Thanks REL1948 but there is no SG32b and SG32 is a cent issue? A Scott equivalent would also do. The UNITRADE Canada Specialized lists the 15A as: 1d violet brown with varieties: c=chocolate brown; ii=watermarked; iii=major re-entry illustrated; iv=major re-entry in I NEWFOUND Let me look in WALSH NFLD Specialized - the bible of stamps from this Newfoundland (only) René

My apologies René and Michael. I got off on the wrong track. I thought you were referring to Canada rather than Newfoundland. Senior moment. Rob

Thanks renden for the two catalogue scans. There were only two printings of the 1d value, the 1st on Sep 27th 1856 and the 2nd on Nov 23rd 1861. This is therefore the 2nd printing which I now presume is SG16 chocolate-brown and in my Scott 2009 is 15A violet-brown. From your post, the Scott specialised and Walsh split this into 2 colours, violet-brown and chocolate-brown, with the violet brown being 21.75 x 21.75. Im guessing there is very little difference in these two colours especially after 160 years! I originally asked because my SG16 is approx. 22mm by 22mm, the die size and therefore I wondered what your 21.75 x 21.75 was. I know its to do with the wetting of the paper and shrinkage but they were all printed on the same day by the same person.

Here's my 1d. I bought it as SG1, brown-purple (1st printing) but it looks the same colour as the 5d I have from the second printing so currently think its SG16, chocolate-brown.
Can't see a "mesh" but there again I don't know what a "mesh" is...
Luckily I currently only want one of each value so it doesn't matter too much

Nice !! The Unitrade/Scott # 1 - 1d is brown violet, dry printed, and measures 22mmX22.5mm According to Walsh NFLD Specialized (the bible) it is 1d brownish claret (22 x 22.5 mm); Cheers René

Note the claw-like flippers of the seal. This is a favorite design flaw which exists in both this forgery as well as the real stamp.

That's a very good point, JeffS . Antonio ( smauggie ), I hate to be the one to say it, but I think that both of the ones you have shown in your post are forgeries. Sorry. Note the typical generic-sort of cancel that is used on both. It seems the same as what I have seen on examples of Cape Triangles and Danish West Indies, which I think has been attributed to Spiro. You may want to have a look at this website: www.jacestamps.com/e-books/Newfoundland_Stamps_Fakes_and_Forgeries.pdf

I'm very confused about Scott/Unitrade using the words "dry printed" to describe the Newfoundland 1857 1d stamp. There was no such thing as dry printing in 1857. This printing technique of using dry paper instead of damp paper required high pressure presses and was only used from the 1920s or 1930s as far as I have read. Prior to 1930, Perkins Bacon only printed on damp paper which tended to shrink slightly when dried. The slight variation in dimensions with these Newfoundland stamps is I believe open to much discusssion but could have been caused by different types of paper having different shrinkage rates and also perhaps by the humidity when printing and the ammount of dampness of the paper. PS Thanks renden for this as looking into this issue of dry printing, I found some really nice articles in the latest BNAPs newsletters.

michaelI have taken note of your comments on dry printing (listed as by Unitrade Canada) I have also looked in Walsh (the bible) Newfoundland Specialized, who notes: AS you note, Walsh does not mention dry printing. Therefore I sent a communication to Mr. Robin Harris, Editor of Unitrade, to try to get his views When recceived, I will be back - Thanks René

You don't often see the Sir Humphrey Gilbert 1933 set in blocks of 4 so was surprised when I was the only bidder.
Looking forward to scanning and mounting these.
