US slogan cancels has been one of my closet collections for a couple decades.
I likely have a couple thousand sleeved, organized by type - state, illustrated, topic, etc. -
and I am curious if any other slogan collectors visit here.
To kick things off, here is an example of the DELAWARE STATE FAIR, WILMINGTON, 1923 which I picked up today.

Anyone ever see a kangaroo illustrated in a US slogan cancel?
Until a few weeks ago I certainly hadn't.
Looks like "Parky" was used only in Los Angeles, paired with dater hub 10, listed as 1954 - 1955 use, then no more.
Bye-Bye Parky!

By 1933, most people would have known that "Airmail Saves Time." But, apparently, some in Boston still didn't know that they needed to "Address Your Mail to Street and Number."

But, apparently, some in Boston still didn't know that they needed to "Address Your Mail to Street and Number." The post office instructional slogans have a lot of potential for collecting. The ADDRESS YOUR MAIL slogan came out in January of 1921 at a time when I suppose correspondents still addressed to a person or company and the town/city name. I counted 19 basic cities using the International machine slogan as you showed, not counting stations and die numbers which really increase collecting choices. Here are the two latest usages I have.
edit: I came across a reference which states that Boston is known used 1920 as well as a couple Universals.

It is curious to me that the USPOD never promoted Special Delivery service with a slogan postmark.

Perhaps because the service was well-established, having begun in October 1885.

With the advent of the War Savings program, the slogan changed to "Buy War Savings Bonds and Stamps."

Hi Jeff:
As a cover collector who doesn't collect slogan cancels, I am enjoyed the thread. A couple of questions from one who knows nothing about the history of slogan cancels:
When and where did the Post Office Department begin the use of these cancels?
Could organizations and/or individuals request the authorization of a specific cancel calling attention to their mission or cause?
Interesting stuff. I hope you will keep digging in your backlog for more cancels.

stamphingerGlad you are enjoying the thread. I am too! In general terms - machine slogan postmarks in the US go back to the late 1890s, promoting the the likes of the Buffalo Exposition, Philadelphia Exposition and a Dallas Exposition. These were formatted for what are called "Barry" cancelling machines manufactured by a company of the same name. Yes, it was a common occurrence for organizations to purchase slogan dies for event promotions. This could be for as few as one for a local celebration or anniversary or for large numbers for such organizations as United Way. I believe the steel die slogans have come to their end with the current use of ink-jet or spray-on postmarks, text and pictorial. Regrettably these latter are often indecipherable due to faulty patterns, thin ink and dark stamps. I save every clear impression that comes in today's mail. The Postal Bulletins of the time, sent to each postmaster, would inform offices of when and for how long to put a particular postmark into use. The area is a lot of fun, lots of bang for the buck, although there are some slogans which command several dollars. The preferred collecting method is on full small cover, followed by government postal cards, then PPCs. The old 2x4 rectangle cuts aren't popular so much today. Many one sees are roughly hacked and not very attractive. They are useful, though, if conduction a study of die deterioration, or impression study of multiple dies of the same slogan. Jeff

tomiseksj You inspired me to dig out my ADDRESS piles and do something with them. 3 pages so far... This is a wonderful thread. I read JeffS’s and tomiseksj’s curious slogans—the obvious for the oblivious—as adjustment to changing practices. Little reminders to postal patrons to leave the nineteenth century behind and get with twentieth century habits. Do your job they say: street addresses are helpful, air mail works, wait ‘till we stick with zip codes. Above all; no more general delivery!
I also am very impressed at the depth of your collections and your recall.

The Post Office Department's Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP) Code was introduced in 1963 -- it became mandatory for large mailers in 1967. This "ALWAYS USE ZIP CODE" slogan cancel on a reply card postmarked in December 1966 was part of the USPOD's effort to encourage its use.

Interesting to see that the Epoxylite Corp hadn't caught up yet! The stamp shows an example of a stamp from a miscut booklet, see the right margin.

ADDRESS YOUR MAIL TO STREET AND NUMBER
HUDSON TERMINAL STATION NY
International Dater Dial 10 Slogan Die D 1925
The illustrated advertising on the front of this card makes this especially nice. And, the slogan's instructions were followed.

This is an image of a cover sent to me from a friend who states, "Found this gem in our family safe recently. Addressee is my father in law, just after his birth, 12/27/1920." I thought the Join the Army Training-Travel slogan cancel would fit nicely in this thread. I would be very interested in any input regarding the 2c Washington coil on this cover. Is it possible it is Sc. no. 491? I always err on the side of caution when making these determinations and I haven't had time to look closer at the image as to type but if anyone has more experience with these issues than I have please let me know your thoughts. The owner of this cover is interested to know too.

darkormex - it is an uncommon slogan, that particular wording used only at Grand Rapids, known late November 1920 through middle of March 1921. I don't know about the stamp.
