I just received a letter from Canada. From a vendor there I bought some stamps via eBay. Everything was fine with the delivery, only the way the stamps were cancelled surprised me a bit. Maybe a German postal worker (or even a Canadian one) wanted to cancel them by hand when he saw that they had not been officially cancelled. So at least the illustrations on the stamps remained visible...

Today's Mail Postmarked 26th October in Port Saint Lucie, Florida Received 28th October in Ontario, CaliforniaBelow is a cropped image of all the stamps used by Terri ( philatelia) for the recent shipment of stock books that she sent me. It is an eclectic mix to say the least! Condition is generally good, although 2-3 stamps got damaged, and I note that the red-ink hand postmarks are very light. That's fine with me, but I suspect that the hardcore postmark collectors would be a bit disappointed in that. Anyway, thanks to Terri for a nice job on franking this package!

I did frank a bit like that for a mailing to India - it was stolen - never reached destination. Now, more prudent in certain Countries....a simple P.O. label (no stamps) does the trick - René

I agree, Chris, those faint red postmarks aren’t the best, but better than nothing or <shudder> sharpies. Those are the ONLY hand cancels our post office has, ditto for other local offices. Oh well. Oh boy - it sure is an eclectic mix! I am trying to use up all of the odd rates like 57c and so on. What a mishmash, eh?

Looks like a soaking party is to be scheduled to get the stamps off and added to your collection. Or give those you already have to the Boy Scout or the Wounded Vets. I bet just a standard soak will them all floating off, at least you won't have to deal with the awful glue on FOREVER stamps. Or you could just put in your album of special stuff. Nick

Here's a cover that arrived in the mail today from the Netherlands, carrying a few stamps purchased from a fellow collector on Colnect. I like the stamp — if I'm seeing it correctly, is that a sliced herring carrying a Dutch flag? I had some very tasty herring when I visited that country about a decade ago. But now I'm getting off-topic. Interesting postmark, too.

I received the scanned Machin N.V.I.'s this morning. They are mainly from various commemorative booklets, Windsor Castle, Star Trek, James Bond, Elton John, Sustainable Fish. With the odd one out (top stamp) on the scan being SG U3021 M15L/MBIL with dull phosphor from business sheets.

Received today, a good example of modern German stamps, with 2-D barcodes, all nicely cancelled (with a roller cancel?) in blue so that the 2-D barcoding can still be read by the appropriate devices. Also, note that, in Germany, they are still able to use stamps for International Registered items.

This came to my office earlier this week, and the office manager saved it for me. Political solicitation, so I’m surprised they used a bunch of older stamps.

Received today, a good example of modern German stamps, with 2-D barcodes, all nicely cancelled (with a roller cancel?) This are the usual spray-cancellations,applied by sorting-machines. Round c.d.s. are applied by hand only in post-shops.

Just got back from my local stamp auction where I was lucky enough to win 2 lots. The scanned booklet is the Stamps for Cooks booklet SG ZP1 issued by Royal Mail in 1969 (1st of December). The first booklet issued in this format. 150 x 72mm. The booklet has a full colour cover showing baked, stuffed haddock. There are 12 recipes on interleaving pages & se-tenant labels attached to booklet panes. The booklet is stapled @ left as opposed to ZP1a booklet which is stitched. The current Gibbons cat value is at £325 sterling. The other lot consisted of more Machin stamps which I am about to start checking this evening.

I don't call this a sort as the stamps have been identified, (the dealer likes to cut album pages for shipping but that is another topic) but they still need to be confirmed. I do find NSW very challenging with the several perforation varieties and faint at best watermarks. With me luck!
