Or.......
How about poorly stored Chalons being stuck together!
The 2d Orange Vermillion is mint with gum. Perhaps a few mint Chalons were left together in a glassine and over time the gum on the 2d has sweated a little to make it stick to the 1d brown below it!
I bet you that if you soaked that 2d that not only would the gum be removed..... but also the brown ink attached to it.

There are no Chalons, that I know of, that have anything close to your 1898 2/- offset Mark. The example of ink transfer - from other sheets as per your 6d Brown above - are about as good as it comes. There are of course early ones with the 'blueing' effect - SG2 & SG3. There are some 'thin' paper examples that show the design through from the front - 'Pelure' paper ones for example. But nothing like your 2/- in your avatar. Dave There is one in the CP Newsletter

That is an interesting one Mark.
From a CP newsletter from 21 years ago - I hadn't seen that before!
But if it IS related to the problem Richardson gave himself of having to use overlapping sheets then yes, very interesting indeed.

Does anyone know where I can get an electronic copy of "the new zealand stamp specialist" June and July issues or have a copy they could scan and send to me. I am looking for an article of Forgeries and Reprints of Chalons.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark( skid ), if you are referring to The Royal Philatelic Society of New Zealand Journal, "The New Zealand Stamp Collector", no doubt, both current and earlier issues are available to their members. Given that membership is open to anyone over the age of 18 and costs just $69 per year, it might be worth exploring further,
At the same time, the organisation's on-line library looks rather extensive for the collector of postage stamp from lands down under...
Happy collecting!

Thanks, This is a different one. It is mentioned on page 23 of Ken Lynch's Sixth edition of the Chalon Issues of New Zealand Volume 2. Its started in 1987, had not dates or page numbers, was probably very informal and may not have lasted long. (I am a recent member of RPSNZ and have found their electronic library invaluable)

Thanks for the reminder re the RPSNZ membership stanley64 That is NZ$69 per year (@us$50) so very good value - especially considering their discounts on their expertizing service and their digital library etc. I have just applied for membership this morning actually (fingers crossed they accept my request - rather embarrasing if they don't!!) :-) I have been a 'lone wolf' for 50yrs so its about time I did something about that .... I may even check out our local Society in Tauranga as well. Dave PS I cannot assist you with your request for information re the journal you are after Mark. Sorry about that.

Hi Mark Well, you aren't going crazy, as I did a search on google and found a reference to that journal. So it exists!! However, There were only 2 entries I could find and both for lots in Sparks Auctions (Canada) for New Zealand Stamp Literature This one was in their auction #11 November 13-15, 2012 Lot 1370 But to date I have not found anything else. I shall keep my eyes and ears open for you. Dave

Great cover Grant. As fresh as they come :-) It has been well cared for during the past 157yrs !!
As I am not near my reference books currently - when was the CH.CH duplex cancellation first in use? Must have been around that time! hmmmm

Wow, wow, wow Philip!
So lucky that it is in nice condition. So often you get a lucky find and you find it has a fault. Apart from the rounded corner perf. it looks very good.
Great find. So, that makes 6 known now?

Being a casual collector, I never really went for the classics. New Zealand was my first foreign country I collected, besides Canada when I was a kid. Loved their stamps from the mid 70's. Unfortunately I sold off my collection years ago, but it has been recently revived. Mostly modern with a few older issues. I always liked NZ and never thought I'd bother with the Chalon's. I just can't see spending 1,000's on them. But I did end up getting 3 for the collection. Nothing special. but nice to have examples of these Classic stamps!

Hi Pete
Nice one!
Those are Scott #'s you show there.
Scott 14d = SG41 Scott 32a = SG113 Scott 33 = SG117
Your Sc14d has a PB BN '15' of Nelson The Sc32a has an Invercargill CDS The Sc33 has an Auckland '1' in diamond in oval of 11 bars obliterator
The Sc32a 2d blue is plate I (very worn) and is a nice example of it. Quite well centered for these!

Earlier I showed a lovely pair of SG117 with an 'SR' m/s of South Rakaia (Christchurch PO District). Here is a copy of 'LR' for Little River (Christchurch PO District) on a 2d orange of 1871. It shouldnt be imperf as this was only issued perf 12.5 or 10x12.5. Presumably it has been cut imperf due to perforating issues (perfs evident on top). There were numerous breakdowns of the perforating machines and 1871 was one of those time periods. According to Wooders 'Little River' opened on 1 August 1867. He rates the m/s as '?' - presumably he isnt sure of its existance - or - rarity! Dave

What are you thinking it is Grant? Pelure paper?
I took Peters Sc41d as correct as there are shades within the black-brown SG41 range.
Perhaps Peter, you could also check that Sc32a as well then in case it has an NZ watermark ....

I pulled out the fluid & tray, then flipped the stamps over. No need for fluid, as the watermarks are clearly visible. The TWO PENCE is a bit harder to see, but it is there...
Don't you love it when people write on the backs of the stamps?

Thanks Peter :-)
Large star wmk - 6d black-brown (grey-brown) SG41 / Sc14d
And that 2d blue is very clean!! Now the only thing to confirm is the perforation. 12.5 or 13 ? It is probably 12.5 but may pay to check while we're at this :-)
