What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

After failing to buy the Canada #1 after several attempts I actually acquired this #2 just before the pandemic last year. (An elusive #1 did finally make it into my collection last month as posted earlier.)

hdm1950 - that is not a pocket change stamp (for most of us) I was not previously familiar with the expertizer or the service. The printing impression looks like it should be laid paper. I hope you have dipped this stamp to your satisfaction. Have you compared the stamp with other examples with certs. The lack of any condition statement (other than VF) is ambiguous at best. If I were to take the wording as an absolute, then the stamp should have NO faults. If me, I would take the time and expense to obtain a VGG cert if you ever think of selling in North America. If not earlier.

My Canada #1 is not certified but the laid paper is quite obvious as is the paper for the #2 in this post. I do not have any plans to sell any of my better stamps so it is not a real issue at this time. I had looked at the Greene Foundation for a few items I have without certificates but I do not see much sense in spending the money when I am not selling. My executor is aware that my collection is rather serious and has direction on the proper selling of it if something should happen suddenly.

I have both of those beauties, plus the 4-hole OHMS official perfin as well. Both 245 & O245 have been hinged before, but the aniline ink is mnh. I love all these pictorial definitives from the 20's to the Peace issue.

I love all these pictorial definitives from the 20's to the Peace issue. After I posted those two Pete I discovered my 4 hole OHMS is mnh which surprised me because the bulk of my stamps from the punched group are used. I vaguely remember buying all 3 as a lot at an auction back in the 1990's. My OHMS appears to be the aniline violet but I could be wrong on them. cv varies little so not a big deal if I am proven wrong and they are all dull violet. As you say they are beauties.

As a young collector this 1934 Jacques Cartier stamp was my favourite stamp probably thinking he was a pirate. The stamp itself does not have a high catalogue value but it is popular due to several print varieties with higher values. One variety is the ‘burr on the shoulder’ with the Unitrade number 208i. At some point I was lucky to find a used copy amongst a bunch of stamps. It has a slight edge tear but still nice to have as an example.
Your post made me pull out my collection to see if I have a variety. So far no luck. I think it is time to sift through the envelopes of duplicates and have a closer look. David

In todays mail were some varieties that I decided to add to my collection. I was never that interested in varieties but now that most the holes are full in my early Canadian stamps this is a interesting new direction. The following is a MNH King George V from the Arch issue Unitrade 166i with the extended mustache on the left side. The next is a pair of the .03 from the Imperial Economic Conference set with the broken 'E' on the stamp on the left. Unitrade 192i The broken 'E' is on the right side POSTAGE on the stamp on the left. The broken 'X' on the 1933 Grain Exhibition (Unitrade 203i) stamp is a little more subtle. It is located on the lower left stamp of the block of 4.

This Christmas present to me arrived today. This is a F-VF Unitrade 9 with a moderate grill cancel and a partial red transfer cancel. It came with a 2022 Greene Foundation Certificate of authenticity. The seller noted a trivial corner thin not mentioned on the certificate. I personally cannot see it but I commend the seller for mentioning it.

A few mint small queens arrived today as I am trying to upgrade my collection of these classics. The Unitrade 36 .02 green was one I really wanted. The colour set off (often referred to offset) on the back is quite clear. A nod to vikingeck for the proper term for this. There is a bit of hinge remnant. I already have a nice mint copy of the Unitrade 34 1/2 cent but I liked this inscription block so I threw a small bid at it and won. Re-entries were noted on the listing as well. I do not get into those at this point but it is another added feature. Only 1 of the 4 was hinged.

Our approaches to auctions may differ, but you have some real gems there Hugh( hdm1950 ) :-) The entire plate of Canadian 1/2¢ SQ is believed to have been heavily re-worked on more than one occasion, so finding the re-entries on the stamps should not be that difficult. The bonus is, with the margin inscription, you should be able to plate their positions as well. The offset on the 2¢ is a fine example and a nice addition to the collection... Have fun and happy collecting!

The 1908 Quebec Tercentenary Issue never seems to get the attention it deserves. As a group it is my favourite Canadian set although the 1929 .50 Bluenose is still my favourite individual Canadian stamp. Here is my Quebec mint set with a few being never hinged. One of the .01 copies I have marked as the 'hairline in the margins' variety. I need natural light to see the hairlines properly. Trying to capture it in artificial light has been a flop.

This image is cropped from a vertical imperforate pair. This being the top stamp. There is a very nice re-entry on this stamp and there are hairlines also present in the bottom left margin. Enjoy, Mike

This major difference in the post mark name isn't something I was aware of, until now, and possibly the same might be the case with other 'limeys' on the Europe side of the pond - just to clarify, the AIR envelope is superimposed on top of the EDMONTON cover for reasons of wanting details of the different post marks to be seen as close as possible. The green 1 Cent looks to be SG 197 - this is George V in the full 'Admiral' uniform series from the definitive issues 1911 to 1922 - I say 'looks' as Gibbons appear to recognize four shade vars. - their Nos. 196 - 199 - though I think this lacks any yellow, so will go with 197 pro tem. but stand to be corrected. The date post mark here is September 1919, and if IIRC it looks like they printed three billion two hundred and eighteen million in total!! The AIR cover dated August 1931 again shows George V, though not in Admiral dress - anyone know what uniform he's wearing? This is the 1 Cent orange SG 275 from the definitive series 1928 to 1929. But, the reason for posting is that have to admit I had no idea that ALTA was the standard abbreviation for ALBERTA - until now, and according to the internet the following may well be the explanation ............ "The abbreviation "Alta." for Alberta is a historical reference to the Latin word "altus" meaning "high" or "deep", which was used by early cartographers to describe the region. It's not necessarily intended to save letters, but rather to have a consistent naming convention with other provinces and territories that also have Latin-based abbreviations, such as "B.C." for British Columbia and "Que." for Quebec." "Apparently it's a common Canadianism of dropping letters and sounds from pronunciation of words, especially in place names For example, Edmonton is often pronounced as ed’nton, and Calgary as cal’gry. Kelowna is often “k’lona”. People often refer to Toronto as tronno or tranna, and various similar elocutions. Newfoundland is often pronounced more like Newf’nland." Perhaps this too is partly responsible.
