Hi, Zipper! Nice post of the Canada QV definitives. I have always liked these two sets (Leaf Type and Numeral Type). Some of the nicest definitives ever, in my opinion. I didn't know if you realized it or not, but the date of your post in North America was 22nd January, which is a sad date in history, as it was the date that Victoria passed away in 1901. But to finish on a happier note, I should mention that this year will mark the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Queen Victoria, as she was born on 24th May 1819. To mark that occasion, I have been thinking of starting a special thread in her honor. Do you think that should be done now and let the celebration begin early, or would it be better to wait until the actual date to kick things off? What do you think? Either way, it will be fun, as I know that lots of members have great Victoria items to contribute!

Seeing the posting by renden earlier, I thought I would share a puzzle that I was able to put together consisting of four map stamps (Scott No. 85/86).
Together, the four stamps can be assigned to the centre in a complete Map Stamp sheet of 100 copies. By examining the four corners, LR - Position 55, UR - Position 65, LL - Position 56 & UL - Position 66, one can see the remnants of the original centre-cross line that was a guideline used to assist in the stamp production process.

My favourite Canadian cover - from Montreal to Kingsville - with transit stamps from the villages of Morpeth (to which it was sent by mistake and had to be re-routed) and Rondeau just a few miles down the road from me.

Looking through my city cancels, I found an even more dramatic centre line from Plate 1, Position 55
If anyone has further information about the York St. roller cancel including what the number represents, please let me know, as I am curious!
As well, note the following correction, the plate position numbers for the four-stamp block positions should be as follows, LR - Position 45, LL - Position 46, UL - Position 55 & UR - Position 56 Thanks to a fellow collector for pointing out the error; I will need to go back and update my album page... :-)

Stan, this represents a "Roller cancel", produced when a metallic cylinder is attached to a handle and the cylinder is rolled by either pushing or pulling over the surface to be cancelled (WINMILL). The author says such cancels are particularly uncommon (but not rare) on Map Stamp. In Toronto, Ontario, for York St Type VC with No. 1 was used from 1895-1898 (Period I). I do not have the definition of the various types used during that period. Note that Period II was 1898-1902, not in usage for your cancel which is Period I. René

Thanks René ( renden ); I appreciate the additional information and education! Prior to your posting, I did not understand the table(s) in Winmill's text "The Evolution of Imperial Penny Postage and the Postal History of the Canadian 1898 Map Stamp and you have opened my eyes going forward ... thank you!
As for the author and his reference to roller cancels being "distinctly ugly", I am not sure I agree; beauty is in the "eye of the beholder" and I like the cancels despite them obliterating the stamp itself. They are not crowns, fancy or necessarily clean, but I do find them interesting...

The bottom stamp in this vertical pair has the Rock in Waterfall flaw. This is the more square rock that occurs on states 10 and 11. It is slightly hidden by the cancellation but can be seen. Mike

In addition to the other images of the map stamps, mostly shared on the "Show your DIY album" & "Canada's various cancels of interest" threads, this is the largest block of the map stamp from my collection...
Canada's Imperial Penny Postage of 1898 (Scott No.85) Block of 10 with full printer's imprint & plate number '3' in top margin.

Given the block of ten map stamps in the previous posting, I think they might be better served as a block of 6 with the plate number and a block of 4 with the selvedge containing the printers imprint removed just to tidy them up.
There is already some perforation separation so I do think I am doing any harm... anyone, thoughts?

For René ( renden ) & others interested map stamp "changelings" or "muddy waters" as renden pointed out, here are a few of the more dramatic ones I have,
These changelings, thought to be a result of the oxidization of white lead present in the ocean inks creates these wonderful hues ranging from pale yellows & dark greens through to chocolate browns.

I do not know how the map stamps would respond to a peroxide bath René; paper conservation is all alchemy & black magick for me.
Some observations and questions though come to mind after reading the Stamp Smarter webpage:
The use of hydrogen peroxide is for the removal of the discolouration from a stamp that has been exposed to sulphur. Is this discolouration part of the stamp's inks or does it "float" on top of the stamp like a layer of dust? If this is the case, then the sulphur exposure and the use of a peroxide bath, cleans or removes that layer(?).
In the case of the map stamp, at least to my knowledge, it is a true oxidization of the lead in the inks used in the printing of the ocean colours and is now part of the ink itself. Any attempt to remove this would also remove the inks themselves.
Worst case scenario, given that the oxidation occurs with the inks used in the printing of the seas & oceans, we would end up with an albino stamp with pink islands ;-)
All speculation and a general rambling from me at this point and to be conclusive, we would have to give to a try!

Given the discussion of to soak or bath the map stamp in peroxide or water, I think after reading an article in "Maple Leafs" the Journal of the Canadian Philatelic Society of Great Britain, it is ill advised. There is an article in Vol. 5 No. 4, The Canadian 2 Cents Map Stamp of 1898 (Part II) where Tomlinson states "If the stamps are soaked in water, much of the colour is removed"
So far now, I do not think it even advisable to try...
PS. For anyone interested, the same issue has an interesting article on Canadian Railway Postmarks.

That is a nice piece of postal history you have there René ( renden ), I like the Jubilee stamps, the Montreal roller cancel and that one transit mark looks vaguely familiar,
Given both are from registered covers, I wonder if it helps anyone with the identification of the city in which either of the two markings were applied?
Happy collecting!
