Here is that Woodville dated Wakatipu Michael. Quite clearly it is 28 JE 98 - so Retroreveal not required for this one. That is still about 7 weeks after the official release date published so there must be earlier examples out there ! But for now, on this board, the one to beat ..... Dave So going through my Wakatipu stamps today I found this Wakatipu dated 21 May 98. Palmerston N. 1 Month before the Woodville example dated 28 JE 98.

So here is what I think a very nice 1898 Pictorial 21/2d. Wakitipu cancelled 14 JE 98 at SHERRY RIVER. A little resource; it’s in the Tasman district. If somebody has more information; please share this.

Another favourite item I like to share with all 1898 Pictorial collectors. The 5d. Otira on piece cancelled on April 7th 1898. Two dates after being issued. Has someone seen an April 5th or 6th 1898 Otira?

I have looked at my 1898 5d Pictorials, for early dates, and report that I cannot beat the 7th April 1898. But, For interests sake here is an image of a recently concluded sale, on Trademe, of the rare 'Deep Sepia' shade of the 5d 'London' print: It sold for NZ$282. It is a very nice copy of it. I don't have one!! Dave

I'd personally want a dated copy of the deep sepia shade to be sure it wasn't a latter CTO example. Used catalogue higher than mint. CP says the sepia shades are not known genuinely used in 1898 but a date in the first few years would be acceptable. These mint examples are chocolate, deep sepia and sepia, the last with R5 No11 re-entry. Philip

I hadn't noticed that comment in the CP Philip. Interesting! They feel that the Sepia supplies were only available in England, where they were printed. Here is what CP states about it: Dave

What do you think that 'A' class postmark office is?
It looks like 'Parakai' - which is a very small village Northwest of Auckland.
Interestingly 'Parakai' opened on 1/1/1907 !

Here are a couple of my 5d Otira. I am no good with the colors and it is hard to tell from scans. The first is probably Wellington sometime in 1903. Looks like a reversed watermark sideways. The perforations are a bit rough. My guess is SG 311a Deep brown The next is Timaru 7 June 1899. No watermark. My guess is SG 253a Purple-brown (CP E13a(2) Red Chocolate). The final one looks like Sometime in February 1899. Probably Paeroa (lucky for me). My guess is SG 253a Purple-brown (CP E13a(2) Red Chocolate).

The 5d. Otira issued 1899-1903 with all the shades. CP E13a(1) to (5) CP E13b(1) to (3) CP E13c(1) to (4) All fine UHM. Shades much easier to distinguish then with the 2,5d Wakitipu.

Very nice Michael.
And nicely presented too :-)
I am looking forward very much to seeing more of your 1898 Pictorial collection. If that page is anything to go by it should be excellent.
Well done

Does anyone know if a 5d Otira is listed in CP with a reversed watermark. It is not listed in the SG that I have.
Thanks,
Mark

For the 5d there is no difference in price (value), relatively, whether the wmk is normal, sideways inverted, sideways reversed or sideways inverted reversed.
Of course that applies only to the 2nd & 3rd local printings. As both the 'London' & 1st local were printed on unwatermarked paper.
NB Some of the other values do have that distinction. The 4d blue & brown 'Lake Taupo' for example. There is a premium on that watermark being 'reversed', although I have a number of copies of it in that form so I believe that it is overpriced as 'reversed'.

While looking for the illusive CP W4 7mm watermark on my 1s I found this with blocked letters. I assume from "New Zealand Postage" and probably the top of the "W" in New and the "Z" in Zealand. SG 065 orange-red.

CP doesn't say too much about the 'letters' wmk found on the locally printed watermarked paper. They do not add any price value - but are certainly a nice variety to have and show. CP states on Permanent page E3 in the notes for the 1898 Pictorials: "...... these same stamps are occassionally found with 'letter' watermarks or without watermark, these being from the edges of the sheets. ....." I believe that the edge watermark, in block letters says "New Zealand Postage". Here are some on SG309 CP E9c (1) (2) (3) :The first one is UHM hence the gum! Dave

Another interesting variety found on these 'locally' printed stamps is 'Imperf at top'. These are listed and enhance the cat value. Found in 3 or four of the mid to higher values (3d, 6d, 8d & 1/-) I believe. Dave

That will be a proof of the 1907 printing from Perkins Bacon & Co. Ltd. on their own watermarked paper. I have a similar watermark (mirror image) on a block of the ½d value.

I am new to New Zealand stamps. Can someone share with us the color shade difference for SG.254- the Kiwi stamp. SG catalog says SG.254 is green, and SG.254a is grass-green. I can't find any examples of 254a right now in online auctions. Somewhere around here I have a SG color gauge, but not sure where I put it. There's no telling whether grass-green is in it anyway. For whatever it's worth, the Scott Classic catalog also says that Sc.78 is green and 78a is grass green. The Michel catalog says that Mi.73a is dunkelgrün and 73b is grasgrün. I have a Michel Farbenführer, and of course it has dunkelgrün but not grasgrün. And their color chip for dunkelgrün doesn't look anything remotely like this stamp. Here are the two shades I found online that are the farthest apart, but neither one is identified as the 254"a" variant. Obviously scanned on two different scanners, so I can't put much credence in the images. The second one does seem to have a hint of olive in it.
