And speaking of the 1½d Boer War stamp - here is a plate proof sheet of the approved 'Khaki shade: Not sure where I got that image either! but have had it a few years now - probably from the time I was wondering about the 'Khaki' shade and what it actually looked like. Quite a 'cold' color compared to the much warmer 'Chestnut' color. A lack of red pigment I assume. Dave It is a very distinct colour. I've not seen one myself. Here are the 5 listed shades as per CP: NB : No certs, but as best I can determine from looking thru' hundreds of examples! Dave

I have only a small collection of First Pictorials, but I was happy to pick up this mint 2/- block on laid paper on eBay for £170.

Lovely block of 4 of the 2/- on 'Laid' paper there Klem. Could you please show us a back scan of it, it will show the vertical lines of the paper to the audience clearer that way (and we can see the gum too, lol) Dave

Nice! 2 examples of the Boer War 'major' re-entry. I haven't picked one up yet, although I have had many of the basic stamp go thru' my hands. It's funny, but the last stamp fair I went to here in Tauranga I was looking thru' a dealers page and saw one on it not identified as such. I looked closely at it but decided it was in too rough a state to buy, even as a basic stamp. I pointed the re-entry out to him and moved on! Dave

The vertical lines are most clearly visible in the selvage; pretty distinctive once you see it.

Dave This RE is often missed, perhaps because the design is quite "busy". I have three copies and none of them were listed as the RE by the sellers.

Thanks Klem. Yes, hard to see the vertical 'laid' lines from the back scan. They are definitely easier to see from the front, on the selvedge, as per below : and on this used example : Dave

Thats a nice used example of the early machine cancel on cover.
You often see single stamps with parts of the cancel, but nice to see it on a full cover in it's entirety.

Waterlow & Sons Ltd Specimen Sample Stamps From the Robson Lowe catalogue March 1968. It seems that it was common practice for Waterlows to produce such sheets, usually of 9, in unissued colours. Punched and overprinted diagonally Waterlow & Sons Ld.

Yes. I see these advertised for sale from time to time. I've never been tempted to purchase one yet, but, you never know. Maybe one day :-)

I was looking thru' one of my 'duplicate's' books with a magnifying glass and got intrigued by these 1903 4d Lake Taupo - bi-color stamps. SG322Not only are there various shades of the 2 colors but as these were a 2 phase printing process, the 2nd color (the center) could be found to be 'shifted' in comparison to the frame. Most of the stamps printed appear to be well centered, however, some have shifted either up or down to varying degrees. One of New Zealand's most famous of rare stamps is also found within this group: The 'Lake Taupo Inverted Lake". _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ From Wikipedia:The 1904 Pictorial 4d Lake Taupo invert is an invert error on a postage and revenue stamp issued by New Zealand which is considered to be the country's rarest stamp. The centre vignette is inverted in relation to the outer frame. The stamp was discovered in a schoolboy album in 1930 and no other copy has been found since then.
The 4d stamp depicts Lake Taupō in New Zealand's North Island. It was part of the first pictorial series originally issued in 1898 but reissued in different colors and sizes in 1899 and 1900. The same design was used for a 1d value issued in 1898.
The sole example is postally used, postmarked Picton 1904.
Previous owners
Jack Dennett (the discoverer)[2]
Marquis De Rosny[2]
Robert W. Lyman[2]
New Zealand Post[2]
In 2010 NZ Post deposited the stamp in the New Zealand national museum Te Papa on a long term loan._______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Anyway, back to the slight color shifts of the central vignette - the blue color.
Here is a 'normal' well centered example:
These ones have the 'blue' shifted NW:
And these ones (the ones that piqued my interest!) where the 'blue' color is shifted South into the frame below:

A clean and simple First Pictorial cover with a late printing of the 2½d Wakatipu, and a nice example of an early machine cancel.
