Last Issue of Rum to the Royal Navy The tradition of giving alcohol to sailors goes back centuries and was originally beer. It was later changed to spirits since beer could go off and rum was chosen in its place. However, alcohol was always a problem and in 1740 Admiral Vernon ordered that the ration should be watered down. If you didn't drink you were given 3d a day instead. By 1970 it was decided to do away with the tradition altogether since it was thought that sailors would fail breathalyser tests! Here is a cover to mark the last day of the rum ration, 31st July 1979.

A Paquebot First Day Cover Day Cover for the Centenary of Sir Rowland Hill's Death 22nd August 1979 A clever contrivance, sending the cover on a Sealink ship, the MV Senlac travelling from New Haven, England to Dieppe, France and thus receiving French postmarks for Dieppe, Seine-Maritime on the British stamps.

Ok daniel, I am a bit puzzled at that Dieppe cancel. The cover has no address so where would the French PO mail it to? A contrivance , with the connivance of the Senlac Purser and an operative at La Poste in Dieppe. I speculate the ship’s officer delivered onboard posted mail to La Poste and waited while it was cancelled and returned by hand over the counter.

I should have mentioned that there are signs of an address sticker which must have fallen off after 40 plus years. This is is not untypical for such covers of this age.
