These are always fun threads, as they don't have to be country or collecting area specific. Since I've recently started collecting Denmark, I've been doing a lot of perusing on ebay. Most things I want I can't afford yet, but I did get this pair of 4sk reds from the first perforated set. Not the best condition, but they were cheap enough. They are also my first examples from this set, and I like the different shades.

I have bought two Norway lots...just for some of the engraved stamps they contain. They haven't arrived yet, although they are late. The rest will go up for sale at the next forum auction!

I like to buy the "big pile of stuff" lots, and I almost never come across any of the old German colonies that way. So I found a couple of small lots, one with a few copies of the Kaiser's yacht and another with some of the old German foreign offices. Ryan

I really get flustered sometimes at myself because I sort of wish I could get all excited about collecting another country but then I think about all the time & effort on my USA and couldn't be happier..lol

perfs14 - Don't forget to show some of them off here I myself and waiting on 5 recently purchased lots of Denmark and Sweden. I really hate the waiting game too. My postal carrier delivers right about the time I go to work, so sometimes I can get the stuff and take it to work with me and other times I have to wait until I get home at midnight to see if anything arrived.

Just got this untidy Sweden lot in the mail. Got it mainly for the early ring types, Oscars and officials, especially with regards to shades and postmarks. However, I will be able to fill quite a few more holes with the rest. Nice addition are the 5 UPU stamps (middle of 4th row, second picture), which I didn't initially notice and which I didn't have any from the set. Most of the stamps seem to be stuck together, because whoever pulled them out of albums left the entire hinge on the back and it stuck to the face of the stamp next to it, probably due to humidity. Not a big deal. Those that won't come apart immediately will get soaked and cleaned up a bit.

PostmasterGS Very nice indeed!!! Those are a couple of my favorite German stamps. The last stamps of the third Reich, the looks in their eyes tell it all. A piece I've wanted for a long time is a cover with either or both. I doubt that little dream will ever come true.

antoniusra,
Though there's still a lot of debate on the issue, the prevailing theory these days is that 909 and 910 were never legitimately used, and any covers are philatelic in origin. The BPP won't even expertise them anymore. The vast majority on the market have forged postmarks from post offices that closed days, or even hours, before the stamps were issued.
For that reason, they've actually gotten a little cheaper in recent years.

An interesting find in my Sweden lot. This stood out because all of the other ones I have from this series have circular date stamps. I can't find too much about it on the net, but what I've read is that it is actually a Danish mark. Does anybody know anything about it? I'm assuming it reads "Sverige"

Oh boy, just got both the 5k and 10k for my Christian X used set. Interesting, the archaic spelling "Kjøbenhavn" on the second stamp. Denmark had a spelling reform in 1892 that removed the silent "j", and Denmark has an orthography law that says all areas of public administration must follow them. This stamp was used 35+ years after the spelling change. Hmmm .... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RetskrivningsordbogenHere's a link to an interesting list of the boatload of orthographic rule changes in Scandinavian history. They sure like fiddling with their spellings! wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/User:LA2#Timeline_of_Scandinavian_orthographyRyan

Ryan, that's some interesting stuff. I had no idea they had so many orthographic rules and laws. I guess if I'm gonna collect the area, I'd better do some reading up on the history.
I've got many stamps from that same era that has the same "Kj" spelling.

From Mette Heindorff, Denmark 2007 Tony, Nothing much is online about the change, but after a bit of googling I found this explanation, which I have translated from a FAQ provided by the public library of the Municipality of Copenhagen bibliotek.kk.dk/bibliotekerne/findbibliotek/rhb/oss/oss_koeben... (in Danish only) Until 1938 it was a free choice to spell the name either Kjøbenhavn or København. There seems to be no official decision about when the change took place, but in official documents from the Municipality of Copenhagen the letter 'j' was removed as early as 1902/03, and the form of København introduced by 1903/04. In governmentan documents the 'j' was removed in 1929, but it still appeared in official directories as late as 1933. By 1938 the form København was in common use. Foreign names for København. English: Copenhagen. French: Copenhague. Greek: [Kopenafn]. Italian: Copenaghen. Latin: Hafnia. Romanian: Copenhaga. Russian: [Kopengagen]. Spanish: Copenhague. Swedish: Köpenhamn. German: Kopenhagen Mette

I bid on, and won, a large collection of stamps in Glassines (about 200 glassines) for 11c (plus shipping) (much rejoicing) They arrived today, the first concern was the yellowing glassines, Then I tried to open them. Must have been in a humid atmosphere, ALL are stuck together in blocks Still undecided about soaking, that's a lot of hard yakka. Gum is getting back at me, for all the bad press I afford it.

British Columbia Scott #7, but in reality is the first stamp solely for BC. I finally got a decent used copy.

So is this an intentional design feature, or just a coincidence? Found in the "V" central to the British Columbia stamp - 3 dots and a dash, Morse code for "V". Ryan

Been a little busy. I keep forgetting to post my new pickups here. Here are some of the latest ones for my Denmark collection, and 1 for Sweden. Mosty of these have not arrived yet and are cropped down sellers photo/scans. Some more to add to the Christian X set. 1904 surcharge...with a twist. This, I believe, is the "flag on 5 bent downward" variety. Not listed in Scott (natch!), but is listed in Facit. Had to get this (it was cheeeep, like me !). This one is without gum, but it's probably the only way I'll be able to afford an unused example. I'm really starting to dig these bi-colored numeral issues. I couldn't pass this little guy up. And finally, one for my budding Sweden collection.

Your 2 Skilling Royal Emblems issue, has a bounty of Cliche flaws in its family history, I'll post a part of the ID over in the Denmark dedicated thread. Not sure if I can find the book in my Library, it's all over the place at the moment, I need a Librarian.

I was going through a recent purchase of a fairly run-of-the-mill Bavaria collection on pages, and got quite a surprise when I pulled this stamp off and turned it over. Michel Specialized lists the 15pf and 30pf in this series with printing on the front and back, but not the 10pf. Don't know if I have something excessively wonderful, but it's fun to get stuff like this when you're not expecting it. Ryan

And the hits keep on coming. This isn't anything unusual in the sense of being unlisted in catalogues or anything like that - it's just an exceedingly cool design. Haida art is cool, puffins are cool, therefore puffins drawn in Haida-influenced art are exceedingly cool. Siggi Odds (Sigurður Oddsson) is an Icelandic artist who lived in Vancouver while growing up, and he uses a lot of the artistic style of Pacific Northwest Coast aboriginal people in his work. www.siggiodds.com/Ryan
