As I understand it, it was initially considered an error, (seal with claws) then that type of seal was discovered as being existant, then the seal was subsequently misidentified within philatelic circles. I don't imbibe, but I do suffer from normal human foibles, so I may have it wrong as well.

Stampgeezer wheezed : "Pulitzer air races, October 1925. A souvenir card with a pair of imperf 1 1/2 ¢ Sc#576 Hardings." Do you think the postmark is "Signal Branch" ? From Domestic United States Military Facilities of the First World War 1917-1919

Do you think the postmark is "Signal Branch" ? It may very well be. This article regarding the race indicates that soldiers were guarding the aircraft so the postmark.

Nice one Steve. "The guards with fixed bayonets were obdurate" hehehe.
So lovely to read old fashioned journalism, where good, polite and respectful speech is the currency.

Thanks for that link and information on the Signal Branch, Rod & Steve. I liked the part about the British pilots appreciating the sandwiches and especially the etc. Does this mean that folks actually imbibed alcohol during prohibition? I did rescan the postmark @ 2400dpi and it certainly looks like Signal Branch. Interestingly, I also found a postcard from 1927 to Czechoslovakia to a Rudolph Dinnebier that was sold on Ebay. I also found one purportedly from Charles Lindbergh addressed to the same name in Chicago. Anyone able to research him?

Rudolph Dinnebier, was apparently a prominent Cachet maker of the time, followed Lindbergh extensively. Some of his work, here: www.philat.com/FIL/Collections/SPOO9210.pdfPrepared by Rudolph Dinnebier, an active collector-dealer of air mail covers, this cover mentions Hadley Field prominently in both the cachet and the address. I believe Dinnebier’s idea here was to pick up the covers at the air field where they would receive an air field back stamp and avoid having them forwarded to New York City with the commercial mail and risk an overstrike cancel. The following information is from the U.S. Highway Post Office Cover Catalog by the Mobile Post Office Society March 2004. www.njpostalhistory.org/august12featuredcover.html

After the latest Maresch auction, I've blown my stamp budget for quite a while, I think. I picked up 3 of the major numbers missing from my Canada collection and now my wallet is much thinner, oh well. Canada #8 MNG, #19 MNG and #40 MH - not really hinged but it looks like it has a small spot of redistributed gum. Ryan

Those are beautiful Ryan! I have yet to get to a Maresch auction, though I did get the catalogues for the last couple. For me joy today is finding a new stamp store, and not far from work. There is the guy I've mentioned around the corner, and there I can get supplies cheap, but stamps? Fuget-abut-it! If you ask whether he has something, he'll mumble, "I don't think so". You look around at the room that looks like a scene from 'Hoarders' and just KNOW there's got to be something there. But why bother. This new place is bright, cheerful, organized, inexpensive (so far) and my lunch hour can be wisely wasted. Here's what I picked up today. 1. Canada War Savings stamp 1940-41 #FWS7 (I already have two others from this booklet pane. My WWI Canada War Tax project is branching out to other wars and other countries) 2. Mozambique War Tax 1918 (See? Purchased some Spanish 1879s and 1890s as well as British Empire overprint war tax off ebay the other day as well) 3. 1984 MNH British Columbia Private Courier 4. 20¢ and 30¢ Rattlesnake Island Bird stamps Fun? Wow!

Except, they should have made the Roo stamp bi-coloured, being a high value, in my opinion. Here are last nights picks on eBay. Can hardly believe how cheap I got the triangle for. For the Bahamas overprint I paid 22 pounds ($US35), expectable price for a missing corner spacefiller, but the 6d Slate triangle, on blued paper, I won for $US15.50. I tell you, if you see something you need, and it is still within your budget, don't not bid for thinking it will go too high for you. Make sure you have your "cry price" riding on it. Like tomiseksj's score with those two GB for $2. Nice bargain. Did you get those on eBay Tom? (If not, I want to know where you get bargains like that Philatelic happiness `Paul

Like tomiseksj's score with those two GB for $2. Nice bargain. Did you get those on eBay Tom? Paul, yes I did. My ebay excursions are typically unplanned drive-bys. I saw those two items just minutes before closing and couldn't resist the urge to bid as both were missing from my collection. Making the deal even better, the seller agreed to give me a combined shipping discount!

Today I won a couple lots of Monaco that really helped out that collection. The first one was a small lot of imperfs, which value better than the more common perf varieties. Out of the 7 stamps, I needed the 30fr of the monte Carlo radio issue and the block of 4 ovpts. These 5 stamps complete my Monaco regular issues thru 1963 The next lot had 22 early stamps but I was only interested in the 5 Semi postals shown in the second scan. It is a complete set (#'s B9-13) for THIS PAGE . These little buggers are pretty highly prized and get quite expensive. The B13 cats for $6,500 and $1,000 for the B8. I never thought I get but a few of them but a couple months ago I picked up the B6 and B7 NH which cat for around $800, more or less hidden in an auction lot Happy Campin! Antonius-Ra.com

Such a great feeling when you get that bargain, or find a sleeper. That's when all those hours of browsing pay off. I had to look in my catalogue, Mitch, which is an old Scott (1997), and it values B9-B13 at $30 ea, mint or used. It says that B18 (the 5fr + 5fr) is the expensive one, at $5,000 mint or used. Tried your link to "this page", but it just gives me a blank window. ~~~~`` Just have to show off my latest procurement, won on eBay last night. Can't get over the fact that I won it for a measly $15 (seems to be my lucky winning amount this week). Because it was described as having a small thin, but have you ever seen a better looking used single? Christmas come early `Paul

I won a small lot of Jamaica and Australian States the other day on ebay in another one of my "drive-bys." I don't even know if I need any of these stamps...but hey looked good in the listing and they look even better now that I have them in hand and they are off of the album pages.

And I really like the Jamaican 2-1/2d engraved bicolour with the nice complementary shades (2nd row, far right). Reminds me of many of the nice Spanish engravings of the Franco era or the Beautiful Austria definitives of the late '70s.

Some more, recently acquired acquisitions in my growing, and expanding War Tax quest. I've gone international. Here are some Spanish War Tax stamps. L to R, 1874 MR1 and MR2 and two shades of the 1875 MR3. Then King Alfonso XII appears on MR5 and MR6 from 1876 and an MR10 from 1875. Finally an 1898 MR23 and King Afonso XIII on an MR27 also dated 1898. Although the last one doesn't have the words IMPUESTO DE GUERRA written on it, it is listed with the war tax stamps.
