It is almost assuredly a "Q" as PQ was the postal code for Quebec.

I haven't done any research on it yet as it just showed up in my mailbox yesterday. This and a few others was a gift from an old friend! I'm not positive but the Regiment marking I suspect is a G.A.R. reference? Anybody want to take a stab at it?

So "Reg. no.4" indicates Registered mail then?

Yes. At the time of your cover's mailing, prepayment of the registry fee was compulsory and the domestic letter rate was 2c. Registered mail was accounted for and sent in special pouches under special locks. Here is another example of a registry marking.

Speaking of google I just learned how to more efficiently use it and it's amazing how one can narrow down a search with the brackets and quotations! [] tell google it's a search query and the quotations take out the invisible and between words. Google has things going on in the background that most people don't know about. For instance if you just write something simple like: Jersey Shore Pa. It is looking for any page with Jersey and Shore and Pa. on them and in no particular order. if you put ["Jersey Shore Pa."] it takes those invisible ands out and narrows things down by a lot! Now it's looking for every page with the phrase "Jersey Shore Pa." in them.

I found this Yakima, Wa., Airmail Special Delivery to Los Angeles on ebay. December 30, 1927. I'm a sucker for almost anything postmarked in Yakima.

I recently got a box from Denmark with a number of bags filled with some mixtures from countries that aren't often seen in bulk like this. Not seen by me, at least. These will fill some holes in my collection and will leave me lots of trading stock, I'm sure. Mostly bags of around 1000 stamps, here are some from Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Syria and Venezuela. There were plenty of other countries in the box too. Yay for bulk piles of stamps! Ryan

Scott #148 National Banknote Company printing-A marble bust by Volk became the model for the portrait of Lincoln on the six cent bank notes which were printed by all three companies. The without grill version is known to have been used as early as 28 March 1870. Over 27 million were issued in carmine with dark carmine and rose and brown carmine shades also identified. Cancellations in black, blue, purple, violet, brown, red, ultramarine and green are known. Scott #162P4 Continental Banknote Co. Printing -
The model for the twelve cent Clay was a bust by Hart. The Clay was only printed by the NBNC and the CBNC; however, the ABNC did produce a special printing. The CBNC version can be identified by the shape of the ball of the 2 in the value. The CBNC version is crescent shaped while the NBNC version is round. Ribbed paper as well as wove paper was used in producing this stamp. The earliest known use of CBNC stamp is 3 January 1873. It was printed in a blackish violet. About 3 million were printed. Black, blue, ultramarine, brown and red cancels have been found.

I probably won't be buying much until after the holidays now. Here is one of the few buys from the past couple weeks. A pretty decent set of Denmark officials (Scott #'s 016-024).

I won a few items at our club auction a couple of weeks ago. Among them was an old album of Canadian stamps. Here are a couple of nice mint stamps I was able to extract. The Quebec Bridge shown on your 12 cent stamp has quite the history behind it, collapsing twice during construction. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec_BridgeThe National Film Board of Canada's website has a tremendous selection of old films available for viewing. One of them is a short documentary on Canadian Mohawk iron workers who worked on much of New York City's skyline. This film contains a couple of minutes on the Quebec Bridge. www.nfb.ca/film/high_steel/Ryan

While we're at it, some more acquisitions from the club aucition. On the US side, a use E2 Special Delivery. Note the missing perf on the top just to the right of the cancel. Also managed to snag the 8¢ member of the 1901 Pan American series (lower left corner of image). That completes my used set, which is why I'm showing all of them. Now it's on to a mint set (that might take a while).

OK, I'm coming to you to ask weather I'm doing the right thing or not? I had recently bought a #400A and the one I received has a top margin straight edge. It does say in the listing that the buyer will get the next one in line and so on. I wrote the seller and told him that I wasn't happy with it, but now I feel bad about it. Would you have done the same or am I just being too finicky? Here is the original listing -

Jeff, if you are not happy, then let the seller know and see what they will do. I would not feel overly guilty. Obviously at $4.69 you did not get a great deal. The listing does say 14 day money back. Let us know what the seller says.

It does say in the listing that the buyer will get the next one in line and so on. I looked at the listing, and I see that it says "SEE HOW MANY ARE SOLD AND CHECK WHICH ONE IS NEXT. THAT'S THE ONE YOU WILL GET" You don't happen to remember how many were sold at the time you bought yours, do you?
In any event, I agree with Theron. I think if you're tactful in letting the Seller know of your disappointment, there's a chance he will allow you to exchange for another (in which case, you get to give him positive feedback).

I received a Greek lot the other day that was pretty much complete from 1911 to 1941. It contained 17 stamps I needed, shown are a few of the highlights.

My latest Newfoundland stamps. I won these last week and got them in the mail today. I have wanted a C12 for quite a while, but waited until a dealer I consider trustworthy put one up.
The first is the Newfoundland airmail 1932 DORNIER DO - X AIRMAIL - $1 Airmail Surcharge. It was a C11 overprinted $1.50. The Dornier Do X was the largest, heaviest, and most powerful flying boat in the world, weighing 56 tons. It had 12 engines. This stamp was created for what turned out to be the aircraft's only flight from North America to Europe.
The next 2 stamps are scott 26 and # 54. The #26 shows a harp seal with claws instead of flippers. This anatomical error was corrected in the #54.

Lovely stamps Geezer! As for the error, I believe it not to be, the stamp image was taken of a particular seal which at that time was unknown, I believe I saw the example on a documentary recently, hence it does exist. story here : bnatopics.org/hhlibrary/newsletters/nfie/nfl-1988-07-w018.pdf (warning large download)

Rod222 - are you saying the link shows that the #26 is correct? It seems to say that it was not, or, have I had too much cheap wine?
Theron.
