Sometimes, an item comes along that you need for your collection. An item you have never seen before, a 'must have' item. Don't we all get that once in a while.........or just once even ? Of course we do. When I first saw the catalogue for the recent Cinderella Stamp Club Auction, I spied an item I knew existed but had never seen. Years and years of searching and never a sniff, not one. It was not an expensive item according to the catalogue but could I find a copy ? Not on your life !! But there it was, written in black and white.......and it had my name all over it ! I marked it down as an item for which I would raise my hand and not take it down before the hammer. It sounds silly upon reflection but at the time it was exciting, to finally get an item and end a decade long search. And so it was, my hand stayed up as the other bidders dropped theirs !! I knew it would be tough because when collecting British Philatelic Exhibition Souvenirs, one is not alone. I even knew who I would be up against and those poor guys came up later to talk about my winnings. It was a nice warm feeling. In the end though the item is really not special, in fact quite ordinary..............but there are not many around and that means a lot. I did pay 5 times over catalogue but collecting Cinderellas these days, that's quite normal !
1981 CALEDONIAN PHILATELIC SOCIETY FAIR, Stirling University, Stirling, Scotland
This fair was attached to the annual Scottish Philatelic Congress and only one souvenir was produced. The sheet reproduced a KEVII Booklet Pane which included a St.Andrew's Cross label. The pane dated from 1906 the year that the Caledonian PS was formed. Thus the sheet commemorated the 75th year of the Society. The sheet was numbered on the reverse. Printed by Woods of Perth and their Imprint was also on the reverse. The sheet was printed in Emerald Green, the same colour as the booklet stamps of 1906. The other sheet is in an unissued Yellow-Green and it is not known how many of this type exist or why they were printed this way. The mystery may always remain.............but now at least I can see what I have been missing for all these years !! (LOL)

1960 LONDON INTERNATIONAL STAMP EXHIBITION. Some items have been shown for this event but there are a few nice sheets still to come. I picked up this one at the CSC auction in October and it is the first one I have seen. These are normally perforated in Red-Brown colour and they depict a portrait of Henry Bishop, London Postmaster, and his historic Bishop Marks. www.earsathome.com/webgil/bishop.htmlThe sheet here is a Proof copy in Maroon, Imperf. I have no idea how many exists. Not in the best condition but it did not seem to bother bidders for such a scarce item. It didn't seem to bother me either !!

Advertising Card produced by the organizers of STAMPEX, 1964 held at the Central Hall, London. The event celebrated the 400th Birth Anniversary of William Shakespeare.
I am sure Rowland Hill would not have approved of William leaving the window open whilst sorting his stamps !! Hang on a sec, stamps in the 16th Century ? I think not !!

I know I have said it a few times in recent posts here, but the items I am trying to add to my GB Exhibition lot are very hard to find. Even some of the cheap ones that remain to be collected. I guess I am just at that stage. The item below is yet another I had not seen yet not expensive. The Catalogue Value is about $13, this being a (sort of) market price as that's way the catalogue was produced. So why so few of the item ? Bad luck ? Anyway, I found one at last and I was the only bidder, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense either.
1964 SOUTHERN STAMP FAIR, Ceylon Tea Centre, London. 22-24th October.
Remainders of the Hilton Hotel Sheet from 1962 were overprinted 'Southern Stamp Fair' in Gold. Additionally, the 1882 De La Rue High Value reproduction was overprinted 'SPECIMEN' in Black (Serifs)
This sheet was also produced by De La Rue by Typography, the design of which was based on an Original Proof.

1912 JUBILEE INTERNATIONAL STAMP EXHIBITION.
I have given details of this event way back on page 1 where I showed 2 Blocks in different shades of Blue/Violet. I have long believed that the greater number of these 'Ideal Stamps' were printed, and hence are to be found, in Blue. I have accrued a small number of other colours but it was a pleasant surprise to find a large Block of Imperf in Black.
More colours another time or maybe elsewhere !!

1980 SCOUTS INTERNATIONAL PHILATELIC EXHIBITION.
A number of smaller Exhibtions and Fairs took place during the big LONDON 1980 INTERNATIONAL STAMP EXHIBITION. (May 6th-14th).
One of those was the Scouts International at Baden-Powell House from May 9th-11th
A souvenir sheet was produced which re-produced the 1957 1/3d Scout Jamboree Stamp but in Mauve (1st Printing) and Bright Purple (2nd Printing).
An inexpensive item which I had only seen once before until the procurement of the sheet below. It can happen !!
Printed in Lithography and sold for 25p at the event.

BRITISH PHILATELIC EXHIBITIONS.........Snippets ! I can show below a copy of the 1939 3rd London Stamp Exhibition Catalogue and two pages from within advertising the Show labels being offered on the 'stamp Magazine' stands. The full sheets of these labels were shown on page 2 of this topic. Recently, an updated edition of the Morgan/Wilson 'British Philatelic Exhibitions' Catalogue has been published online (at the GBPS website). It shows a more comprehensive listing of peripheral items such as Tickets, programmes and other ephemera besides unique items that reside in Royal or Society collections. Items that the ordinary collector will rarely, or never see. In the previous edition, the labels from this 1939 Exhibition were stated to have been produced in sheets of 12 of each of the 4 colours. A few years ago I came across and acquired, sheets of 18, those which are shown in this topic. The same sheets are now shown in the new Catalogue (from scans I sent to Graham Wilson) but no mention is made of the sheets of 12 which obviously exist. I have both seen them on display and bid on them twice at auction !!! I found it odd that an item that has been listed since the first edition has now been omitted and I will try to enquire as to why that is. On the other hand, I have never heard about, nor seen elsewhere, the sheets of 18 except for those in my possession. Research and many enquiries, even to De La Rue (who acquired the Harrison Archives) drew a blank. Now to move on to 2010. In the TSF Newsletter V1-3, Philatelic Memories, I touched upon the following item shown on the ebay screen grab below. With only 50 copies existing, I had never before seen or heard about one on offer. The original cost was £50. Of course it has not sold yet but is this then the market price ? I was offered a figure slightly below that in 2011. A fellow Exhibition collector known to me made a 'best offer' on the item but was turned down !! Happy Collecting ! Londonbus1

This has been shown before, long ago, but I have never had such a nice copy as this. An Exhibition label from the 1897 London Philatelic Exhibition held at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours !! (What a name !!). In the design of the famous Mulready Envelope, printed on grey-ish paper, Perf 11.25.

I have been trying for almost 10 years to get hold of these two sheets, even one of them would have been OK. But it was tough. Finally whilst rummaging around in those Cinderella boxes in the UK recently, I chanced upon them ! Yay!! Papermakers and Coverters Tullis Russell took a stand at the StampShow 2000 at Earls Court in London and together with Intaglio Engraver Bacon & Bacon produced two fine sheets. Glenn Morgan & Graham Wilson's excellent Catalogue, British Stamp Exhibitions, tells me that the sheets were printed in 4-colour Lithography, Holography, Embossing, Intaglio and Silver Ink on high quality Emperor 'Multi-Security' Paper. The top left label of the first sheet shows a StampShow 2000 hologram which was applied by hand at the show. The second sheet has a Tullis Russell hologram and these were produced before the show. I have to say they are quite impressive to touch and see and of superb quality for modern stuff.

1934 Air Post Exhibition in London. (APEX). Other labels have been shown but my notes tell me that this one hasn't. I stand corrected but anyway there is an added little extra ! The Tete-Beche pair of labels were prepared by Rocket enthusiast Gerhard Zucker for his planned Rocket launch (that never was). These also exist in Maroon and with a 2/6d Overprint on the Maroon. They are all quite scarce. I have zoomed in to show a small central section and there you will see a Mr.Golightly on his way to the California Gold Rush aboard his super-powered homemade Rocket !! (Fantasy Tale-Google it). Labels showing only this scene were also produced, possibly for this event or for a later launch in Holland and these are not listed. I showed these labels in a Newsletter article some time ago, but have added one here for comparison with these Triangular types.

POLPHILEX, 1966. On page 1 of this topic I showed the Blue sheet, engraved by Czeslaw Slania, for this Exhibition which was held in both Birmingham and London on seperate dates. Here is the Brown sheet I mentioned in that post, this one has been cancelled with a Polish Eagle Exhibition Handstamp which I have also seen in Red (on the Blue sheet). The two sheets were printed in a larger sheet, Tete-Beche but examples of a pair are extremely scarce. I was outbid on the only one I have ever seen. The scan above is from the lot I was outbid on. It was offered by a Polish Collector living in London who had loads of nice material, some of which I managed to win. His stocks ran dry and I have not heard from him for a long time. I live in hope ! Londonbus1

PHILATEX, 1979. 30th July-1st August, Town Hall, Bournemouth. There exists 3 types of sheet. One normal, One on glazed card (shown here) and one with Black Omitted, which shows only the Blues and the 1d Red. I do not have a copy and have never seen one 'in the flesh' !! The card shown here is numbered on the reverse and was used for presentation purposes to stall holders, staff and visiting dignitaries. It was not available to the public. It commemorates the 100th Death Anniversary of Sir Rowland Hill.

I have not gone through this thread in a while, there are still many more to cover. Thanks tomiseksj for showing this fine sheet. 1960 was a good year for Exhibition sheets. I have one waiting for me in the UK which I will pick up at Christmas and show it here when I return. In the meantime, I can add this one. 'Spot the Difference' anyone ?

rene I do own a copy but refrain from pulling out to scan separately maybe later I can scan the page. Dad bought it and it was kept at the Bank of Montreal safe.......not a place I like to keep stamps !!!! $10,000.00 (his buy) and I sold it for $18,000.00 and you will note that the price is fluctuating since the late 80s........but as much as I liked it, as much as the $$ helped us buy a nice house on a lake.......practical and no Income Tax !! He was sick into the 90s and never knew about the sale. At the time he had transferred his stamps to me. FYI René

There is still missing inverted "jennys" that were stolen. Some colors missing on the seaway invert as well but not aware of any of them stolen,so I have no idea of the significance of the color absence.

Reviewing the inverted Seaway face on the sheet posted a while ago, this is not a reproduction of the famous Scott 387a which shows an inverted text (in red). The blue face is not inverted. I have never seen an inverted seaway with no text - René Sc/Unitrade # 387 se-tenant. If you invert the text, it becomes an "inverted seaway", much more valuable

There is still missing inverted "jennys" that were stolen. Some colors missing on the seaway invert as well but not aware of any of them stolen,so I have no idea of the significance of the color absence. The colour absence has nothing to do with the original stamp. The sheet that was shown by tomiseksj is the regular issue that was available to visitors at the Exhibition. There was also a Colour Proof set of 6 sheets that are so scarce i have only ever set eyes upon one set in all my days. Of course I was outbid on that lot !! Then there are two error sheets ! Yes, error sheets of an error sheet and these were both recently discovered and only made it into the most recent catalogue. How many of each of those two sheets is unknown but I have only ever seen one of each. One I was outbid on one, and the other I showed in that earlier post which I won for 99p !!! The seller either didn't know what it was, or was hoping for a bidding war which never materialized. I was lucky. It simply shows the missing Carmine on the Inverted Jenny and the St.Lawrence Seaway stamps. Londonbus1

THE STORY OF STAMPS EXHIBITION 9-18 April 1958, De La Rue House, Regent Street, London. This popular exhibition was covered in the previous page (4) but recently a couple of scarce and quite valuable items have come to hand, courtesy of the Cinderella Stamp Club Auction. Listed in the catalogue are sheets of 32 of the Green label of Thomas de la Rue shown previously, but on ungummed Pink paper and on gummed white paper. Both are stated to have been printed on 'Proof' paper. I had never previously seen either and whilst not in the best condition the scarcity of both meant that I just had to bid !!! I won both with my top bid which I consider lucky. Both sheets are Imperforate and are listed as Proofs. There is no record of how many were printed. The unusual thing about the sheet on pink paper is that it has been printed on both sides !!

CALEDONIAN PHILATELIC SOCIETY, 2000th Meeting. Back on page 4 I wrote about finding a Souvenir Sheet that I had been searching for, for many years. The sheet was an unlisted version of an issue for the 1981 Caledonian Philatelic Society Fair. The colour was Yellow-Green. A short time ago I won the sheet (below) for a minimum bid. It is that same Yellow-Green colour sheet but overprinted to commemorate the Society's 2,000th meeting in 1995. Could it be that the Club had held back these colour types as unsolds and just decided to use them up for this occasion ? Maybe they went missing in storage ? I hope to find an answer to my query soon and will post it up here...............

This week has been a good week so far in this, my favourite topic and collection. Only added to very occasionally these days, but on Sunday I spotted 2 labels I needed to complete a set. 1934 AIR POST EXHIBITION, LONDON I only needed the Blue and Purple Institut de Gravure labels with left tab to complete the set of 6 and there they were.........just waiting for me to buy !! They arrived quickly too, in just 4 days ! The two additions and the other 4 are shown below. In addition to that piece of good fortune I have also managed to obtain the Number 1 stamp from my Philatelic 'Bucket List'. I gave up even thinking about them knowing there are so few and finding one would be a miracle........and there it was, on ebay ! As a BIN !!!!! It's on it's way and I will post it when it arrives. (it's quite ugly) Tonight I am bidding on another very scarce (dare I say rare?) item which will make it a triple-whammy in one week for my favourite topic ! Should I be pinching myself ?

A triple whammy it was (see previous post) !!!! I woke up just now, ran to the laptop to find I had won the auction from Argentina !! They are mine, my most expensive purchase ever. But we only live once............... STAMP CENTENARY EXHIBITION, 1940. 2 different coloured proofs of labels for the re-scheduled event, not for the original event (cancelled)
