These 16 stamps were produced for the planned Fourth Annual London Stamp Exhibition in 1939 which was cancelled due to the war. Quite rare. Scan_20200516 by Daniel, on Flickr

There may be some duplication here but also some material not shown before. Firstly, the National Stamp Exhibition March 1947 cover with exhibition hand stamp and one souvenir stamp, SCA. Next, we have a postcard for BPE 1947 sent from Glasgow and a souvenir stamp. That year, the BPE was held in London at The Imperial Institute from 23rd October to 5th November and then in Glasgow at the McLellan Galleries from 20th to 27th November. So, there were 2 souvenir stamps. Scan_20200606 (4) by Daniel, on Flickr Stamp Exhibition, Royal Horticultural Hall, London 1923. Two London Stamp Exhibition 1939 in different colours. London Stamp Exhibition 1936, single in red, pair in green and a ticket for that exhibition. Scan_20200606 (5) by Daniel, on Flickr

Here are 2 covers flown on Gerhard Zucker's rocket at Rottingdean in Sussex on 6th June 1934 and they feature 2 of the overprinted APEX stamps. This flight was a success but subsequent British flights were not. Much of the information about Zucker that can be found is incorrect and some of his later rocket flights are highly suspect. Indeed, he was imprisoned for mail fraud in 1936. I will post more in the Rocket Mail topic in due course. Scan_20200625 by Daniel, on Flickr

I just won this for 99 Aussie cents !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unlisted type (downward shift of Carmine), I thought I was dreaming. Not a 'new' event, a number of items, including this one (normal type, others) have already been shown. Lucky day.

APEX, Air Post exhibition 7th to 12th May 1934 Three interesting items from APEX 1934. Firstly an early use of the exhibition labels on a Paquebot cover with a penny ha'penny George V brown definitive and two APEX 1934 labels with one tied to the cover with a MARSEILLES_GARE BCHES DU RHONE Paquebot postmark dated 15 III 1934, almost 2 months before the exhibition, on a P&O Branch Service envelope (shown front only). Second, a postcard, FIRST FLIGHT, flown by autogiro on 8th May 1934 and finally, a postcard flown on the last day of the exhibition (hence the blue hand stamp). The pictorial side of this card, shown further below, has an APEX label hand stamped on a picture of an 1850 balloon flight for a mail delivery system (looks rubbish) Scan_20200808 (6) by Daniel, on Flickr Scan_20200808 (8) by Daniel, on Flickr

1961 Association of Essex Philatelic Societies (AEPS) Convention held at Wanstead House, East London. I found a blue sheet, first one I have ever seen and put it next to a spare Green sheet to show the difference in text. An Orange sheet also exists.....I haven't seen one of those either !!

1912 International Stamp Exhibition. In previous posts we have seen blocks and part sheets and read about this Exhibition and it's souvenirs (we have haven't we ?) ! Over the years I have, against my wallet's better judgement, accrued a small amount of the many colours that were printed. But there are lots more out there and the search goes on. My wallet will just have to bear it !! Here are some additions to those already seen. Someone has tried to mutilate the two items below by changing the value. A pointless task achieving nothing except the destruction of a very hard-to-find Ochre-Brown variety. Shame on them ! The labels below are a very sad bunch. Someone has tried to perforate some imperforate stamps and failed miserably. The fact that they did it on the scarce Brown colour is all the more heartbreaking. But here they sit as a reminder of some terrible vandalism we can find in our hobby !! The Black/grey strip is a poor reproduction, badly printed too. Londonbus1

.....continuing with the 1912 Exhibition, but by accident, I have just won these beauties. Not seen around too often and definitely not at the good price I found. And there might be more......watch this space ! These are all postcards, printed in limited quantities and most are not in the colours of the printed stamps. How I would have loved to have been at this event !

The 1912 Exhibition seems to be following me around !! I recently came across a post from an eBayer on a Facebook Stamp group talking about some items he was listing. One thing led to another and I had the chance to bid on some nice and rarely seen items from the 1912 International Stamp Exhibition !! Needless to say bidding was brisk and I was outbid on some items of interest. But I did win my first and fourth choices !! One of the ones that got away was a signed letter from Fred Melville (Junior, now National Philatelic Society) to George Bernard Shaw asking for opinions about the Ideal stamp which was the winning design for their Society competition. The items here are most likely proofs for the image reproduced on the cover of the Official Exhibition catalogue. You will note that the value has changed from 1d (Ideal Stamp) to 6d which was the basic price for the catalogue. There was a more de-luxe version too that cost 1/- and that value appeared on the image. These latter items may also be up for sale in the near future, who knows. Here are 3 of the 10 proofs in that winning lot together with a Press Photograph of a 1d Black ideal Stamp. More tomorrow ! Londonbus1

The items shown in the previous post and the other proofs shown below were a small part of the collection and estate of the American Physicist, Herbert A. Trenchard. Trenchard was a Collector of Philatelic History and Ephemera, specializing in early Stamp Dealers, Societies and Stamp Exhibitions. In 2006 he received the Smithsonian Philatelic Achievement Award alongside Britain's foremost Cinderella Expert Francis Kiddle. I will look forward to adding these to my Exhibition lot ! Londonbus1

Of course, we've seen this London International Stamp Exhibition 1950 Souvenir Sheet before, but this one is attached (hinged) to what was described as a matrix. Produced by the Globus Stamp Co., it does at least explain that the stamps are from the 5 continents. Scan_20201002 by Daniel, on Flickr

Here are some more British Philatelic Exhibition sheets. In fact, the top two, from 1971 and 1972 are on card depicting an Edward VII £5 orange essay printed by Thomas De La Rue and a 10 shilling Malta from1956 in black printed by John Waddington. !974 and 1977 sheets printed by Courvoisier depicting Isle of Man and Guernsey proofs. two 1978 sheets on white and cream paper depicting a Gibraltar proof and printed by Walsall Security Printers. Finally, an additional 1981 sheet for the Royal Wedding (Charles and Diana) featuring the basic Crown Agents design, also from Walsall, and for 1983 a Falkland Islands proof printed by The House of Questa. A couple more British Philatelic Exhibition sheets for 1980 depicting a proof Guernsey stamp honouring Guernsey printer Thomas De La Rue and printed by Thomas De La Rue and 1985 Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother on Crown Agents stamps printed by The House of Questa. Then there is a Walsall Security Printers sheet produced for London 1980 with their hand cancellation and depicting a Zurich local tax stamp from 1843, reproduced on a 19th century litho stone press. Finally, an interesting oddity. Black and white press photos are known but this one does not depict the issued sheet for The London International Stamp Exhibition for 1960. Rather, using the font from the 1950 sheet, it depicts a different selection of stamps to those finally issued. Presumably, some kind of early mockup. Below are the actual sheets issued for 1950 and 1960. Scan_20201002 (3) by Daniel, on Flickr Scan_20201002 (4) by Daniel, on Flickr

During the Zoom meeting last Saturday my little 'Show and Tell' item was the 2010 Reproduction £1 PUC stamp in Blue, the so-called 'Guildhall Printing'. One of the things I remember about that visit to the Guildhall was the high security and no cameras or phones were allowed in, and yes, everyone was scanned and searched. I recall one guy sneaked his mobile phone in and whilst taking pictures was immediately taken to the entrance and evicted !!!!! However, at least one Stamp Magazine was allowed in to cover the event and the pictures here, courtesy of Glenn Morgan's 'Stampprinters' will give a better idea about the printing of this item ( stanley64, Beryllium Guy, vikingeck ). Glenn used this in a 2010 edition and his text will show that none of these blocks of 4 would be available to the public. The lottery for 50 blocks in Presentation packs came early in 2011. Great pictures....take a look. Scroll now past the first juicy items to the second page. www.stampprinters.info/DS18.pdfI got number 30 !! (From 2011, my lucky number !!)

Question for Londonbus1 and daniel: Can you give me some idea of a fair price for the 1950 London International Stamp Exhibition souvenir sheet? I like it for the COGH triangle, of course, so would like to get one for my collection. I see one listed on eBay for £1.99 + 1st class postage. Is that a reasonable deal?

I am in the middle of a discussion on Facebook with another collector of GB Exhibition items. I think I may have made a DISCOVERY not known before !!! Yet not difficult to see ! In 2016 I won a special one-off item auction at the 1st Cinderella Stamp Congress in London. The prize was 5 half panes of the 1912 'Ideal Stamp' from the Grover Archives which had been discovered abandoned a few months previously. All 5 blocks of 60 had mock Plate Numbers in the bottom margin. The Catalogues do not know what these stand for and I have not heard it discussed elsewhere. You can see a Plate Number on this half pane which was the prize in one of my Newsletter Giveaways won by firstfrog2013 . It is assumed that the numbers are for the show dates 10-October and 12-1912. I have only now seen during my discussion on Facebook that the letters are S,T,A,M,P !!! Well, it's kind of a discovery, isn't it ? Grant me my moment of glory I might be the only one alive with a complete set of 'Plate' numbers ! (They don't exist on each sheet) Londonbus1.......off to bed ! Steve ( tomiseksj ) just forwarded an email to me that landed in the Stamp Forum inbox. As I asked in my post (above)......my moment of glory has been granted !! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Dear Michael, We corresponded a while ago and. indeed, I sold you some exhibition souvenir material via eBay. I've been retired for a few years now and your email address, if I ever saved it, has long since disappeared from my contacts list. This is Graham Wilson (as in the BSE Catalogue I co-edit with Glenn Morgan). I would be pleased to get back in touch with you, so if you could respond to this email, that would be great. The main reason for writing was to thank you for solving the mystery of the Control Numbers at the bottom of the Ideal Stamp sheets... STAMP... what a Eureka Moment that must have been. I shared your revelation with Glenn and he was surprised that, what must have been a private joke among the organisers, should remain undetected for so long. Kind regards, Graham Wilson" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Londonbus1.......

Here's an example with the Control number, most likely printed inverted in the central gutter. It looks like it may have been tampered with ? It is the S.(dot) number.

The first sheet was issued as a souvenir of Philatex Bournemouth in 1975. It depicts Elihu Burritt's attempt to establish a uniform penny post. Burritt was the US Consular Agent in Birmingham, England and launched this campaign in the 1840s with the depicted envelope produced by James Valentine in Dundee. A more detailed depiction can be seen on the modern postcard at the bottom. Although I don't have the original envelope, an original cut-out of the imprinted stamp is shown in the middle. Good evening everyone, hope all is well. I have a number of these miniature sheets, which celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Stockholm Philatelic society with an 8 1/2p British stamp. Tried to find similar on the web but have not found. Have you seen these before and any ideas? Regards Graham

Hi, thegubman, I haven't seen this particular souvenir sheet before but many similar 'postally valid souvenir sheets' exist with imprinted octagonal stamps, see ebay for examples. It would appear that it was possible to get these produced, whether officially, through Royal Mail, or privately I'm unsure. The 90th anniversary of the Stockholm Philatelic Society was celebrated and there appears to have been some kind of exhibition in Stockholm on the date shown, 18th September 1976 and medals exist, see ebay again. Therefore, I would assume that the sheet was produced by British members of the society. At the time, 8½p was the first class rate and so a further 8p was required to send it recorded to Sweden. I don't usually show items that are not my own but I have been given these scans from the collection of Graham Wilson (British Stamp Exhibitions) and he was happy for me to post them here. Seemingly he has had more luck than I in the bidding stakes as these two were purchased for next to nothing !! Such is life. The first sheet is from the 1940 Stamp centenary Exhibition held at Lancaster House, London, May 6-14. The sheet below is Perfinned 'SPECIMEN' on the Penny Black labels and shows the original venue in the top margin. there are no Red Cross overprints. (See earlier post for issued sheets). This is one item I can call rare !!! The second sheet is from the Czechoslovak Philatelic Exhibition, Grosvenor Place, London, Nov 8-20, 1943. The regular sheet (itself hard to find and pricey) shows 5 perforated stamp-like labels. The sheet below is Imperf and is signed by the Czech president-in-Exile Edvard Benes. I assume he visited the event whilst working in London (?). A lovely piece !! My thanks to Graham Wilson for these beauties ! Londonbus1
