We recently had a membership request where the applicant was hoping our membership could offer some guidance in ways she could learn the identity of and/or locate the individual who had sent her father a postcard from Dresden back in 1967. Specifically, her application included the following note: I informed her that membership in this case was not appropriate but I would post her request for assistance in a thread and she could view any responses that were provided. I asked her to send an image of the card and provide any further information that might be applicable. Both are posted below. If anyone can offer assistance (e.g., recommend potential information sources, etc.) please post them here. If you'd like to contact her directly, send me a PM with your contact info and I'll pass it along.

I upload everything to the TSF Image Host rather than the link that goes to imgbb. The imgbb is a free host so your images may disappear (like what happened to photobucket). Is the TSF host free? The Forum pays for the host but it is free for members' to use (but only for images they post on the Forum and not for their personal photos).

Bobby was quite active in the Forum's early years and quite a generous member. He will be missed.

Alan joined the Forum just 8 days after it went online and he remained active until his passing. He was a friend and will be missed.

Let me take this opportunity to clarify Forum policy -- while posting in English is definitely preferred (the vast majority of our membership are English speakers), it is not required. I added the translator function to the Forum because I understand that a portion of our membership does not speak English as either a primary or secondary language. If you are not comfortable with your English skills, and your primary language appears in the pull-down menu, select your language when creating a post and, once you've completed the entry but before uploading the post, select English from the pull down and the software will translate the text for you. For those of you who are English speakers, cut those who aren't some slack if what they have written seems a bit off.

A sub-board board titled Fabric and Needle Arts has been created in the TSF Lounge/Off-Topic board that is only be accessible by those who are members of the Fabric & Linens group. I've taken the liberty to add philatelia , seegod1 and polarbear to that group. Any others wishing to participate on that sub-board should send me a PM requesting that you be added to the group. I am not going to move the above posts into that sub-board but group members are free to create new threads and copy pertinent information from any of the above posts into those threads.

The "edit" button appears on the uploaded post. If you have not yet posted your reply, simply skip the first line and proceed with the rest.

Welcome, Nick. I encourage you to create a thread in the Philately Links & Useful Tools board to provide more detail and enable discussion of your digital Collector's Book. As to your grandfather's collection, sharing information and images of what you consider to be the more interesting items, in the appropriate regional or topical boards, is the best way to contribute to the Forum and provide useful information (moving you closer to that 50 post milestone).

The specialty gauge measures the distance between the center of one perf hole to the next, in thousandths of an inch. The gauge has the proper spacing between perforations and the dots are the same diameter as the perf hole size. That said, the correct use of the gauge is to place the dots in the perf holes, rather than on the teeth. Make all measurements under magnification and the match should be the same along the entire length of the side being measured.

angore , The maximum image size on the TSF Image Host is 1084 X 1400. Images greater than this size automatically get downsized. The maximum upload file size is 2 MB.

It doesn't work for me using Chrome. When pasting the link into Edge, the pdf comes up. I assume that my Chrome settings don't allow the redirect.

...The odd thing is that, to my knowledge, for as big and populous as Southern California is, there seem to be very few stamp clubs around here. I recall when I first moved here in 2007-2008, I contacted APS, and they told me that there were no clubs near me. They sent me a list of members in the area back then in case I wanted to try to start a local group, but I never followed through.... The APS Club finder shows 3 clubs within 25 miles of your zip code: Orange County Philatelic Society, Riverside Stamp Club and J.P.L. Stamp Club.

Thanks for letting us know this, Steve ( Admin ). I am certainly interested in hearing what he has to say. An email string of 18 messages failed to get a cogent response (perhaps attributable to language differences). As best I can determine, the seller took offense to having been publicly "outed" (my word) without having a chance to respond, and also to an email received which threatened to report him to ebay. His reason for not responding to notifications was that he was undergoing surgery to have a tumor removed (he even sent me an image of the freshly stitched and bandaged scar). I asked if he had contacted the stamp's buyer to make him or her aware that the stamp was or may be a forgery and his response was essentially, I'm here because of the comments and what's happening with the sale was not for me to know. He continued to assert that I wasn't accepting him for membership so that he could reply, even though I'd made multiple request for him to provide a reply that I could post on his behalf. His final comment to me follows: I closed the conversation by advising him that I would post what I believed to be his primary concerns. His membership application has been rejected. I didn't see his listing and can't comment on the stamp's validity but I do think that we need to seriously consider whether or not "naming and shaming" is a practice that is allowed on the Forum. This is an issue to be addressed within the Moderator team.

Beryllium Guy , JeffS and hdm1950 , The seller was apparently in the hospital having a tumor removed and unable to respond to your notifications. I know this because he has requested membership so he can "set the record straight." I am engaged with him via email because I don't want to accept him for membership if he is only going to post a response and then never be heard from again. I have offered to post his side of the story and am waiting to hear back from him.

... Is Svalbard a postal autonomy? Is my polar bear stamp shown above valid for sending from anywhere in Norway, or only for mail originating from Svalbard? Nobody from TSF knows??? I thought tobben63 's remark that the post on Svalbard was run by Norway's Post answered the question but I didn't ask the question. Have you asked your question to info@visitsvalbard.com ? They live there so surely they will know.

Is it bad that I haven't read any yet? ... It is very bad! I should send you to your room and have you stay there until you've read everything. But I won't, because there is so much to read and so little time. All I ask is that you read the next newsletter when it is published later this year and then participate in the poll that will ask you to identify your favorite article from that issue.

Per the OP's request, this thread has been locked.
[NOTE: Unfortunately, the National Philatelic Centre in NSW, Australia will only certify Australia issues from 1901 and beyond.]

decentguy, Most of us aren't mind readers so it would be helpful if you told us what you think you have (i.e., by catalog and number) and why you think you have it (e.g., perforations, paper type, printing method, color, etc.)

To the best of my knowledge, he is not a member here; however, it is nice to see him able to assist collectors.
You'll find many like him here and the best way to get to 50 posts is by sharing images of what you and your child have in the topical collection.

hkwill, I see that you first posed the question back in 2014 and still haven't received an answer. Perhaps this will go down as one of philately's great mysteries. I hope that someone here will be able to provide you with some insight.

... if you are having access issues, it may be that Steve ( Admin ) hasn’t changed your status yet. ... Individuals whose mini-profile reflect " New Member" are restricted to only being able to post on the New Member Introduction board -- a safeguard against spammers polluting the entire Forum. Individuals whose mini-profile reflect "* *Member**" have made the required introduction and are able to post in most other areas of the Forum. Once an individual has met the criteria for full membership (i.e., 14 days/50 posts), his or her mini-profile will reflect " Member" and access to the Buy, Sell, Trade boards is allowed.

Congratulations to Beryllium Guy for his article, Philatelic Travelogue: Hunting British Postboxes, being selected to represent the Forum/Chapter as its 2022 APS Article of Distinction. Thanks to the 38 members who took the time to participate in the selection process (sadly, only a portion of the membership who frequent the Forum on a regular basis). My special thanks go to those who contribute the articles that sustain the Newsletter.
