I generally use tweezers when handling mint, or older stamps. If I am uncertain about condition, I use tweezers. Otherwise I use my fingers when sorting or counting. It’s just more efficient for me.

Partly why l like collecting Liechtenstein is many of the issues are engraved like the ones just posted. More recently fewer issues from Liechtenstein are engraved. As a beginning collector l fell in love with the first Liechtenstein stamps my grandfather gave me....then around 1972 I subscribed to their very efficient, collector-friendly standing over service. A $US20 bill mailed a couple times a year bought me First Day Covers of every new issue as well as one of every new stamp and souvenir sheet. Too bad we can not get much for $20 these days. I started collecting Liechtenstein because of the engraving. Too few are being produced these days. Though I still collect modern. Liechtenstein, I have my eyes open for engraved one to fill the holes in the collect. Of course price can be 5he deciding factor. david

KGVISTAMPS,
Thanks for the additional information. I think I will be much better prepared to organize my holdings. I think I found the box where they might be hiding.

Thanks for posting. Had no idea there were so many varieties. I will have fun sorting through my meagre holdings of Ceylon stamps. I just wonder which box they are hiding in.

New Years greetings to all Forum members.
generally i do not make New Years resolutions. I find they seem to set me up for failure. If I do make a resolution, it is not at the first of the year.
i had resolved to get my stamping area better organized and I did manage that.
i wish I had more time to do some stamping. Will try to get more time in stamp “room”

butterfly,
This type of service was still being used as late as early 1990’s in Canada. It was used readily in my village where I grew up in rural Nova Scotia. We always picked our mail at the post office counter as we did not get mail delivery no did we have a post box. I am not sure if this is still offered as most mail in rural areas are left in “ communal” post boxes .

Too bad about those pen cancels.
i am getting more and more mail without a cancel at all.
so stamping for next few days. Too many social events going on. I do still have a couple of stamping gifts to arrive. Christmas again. They were gifts from me to me because I have been a productive stamper in 2018.

Last month I posted pictures of my new (downstairs) stamp room....I finally finished moving everything into it. There's also a closet full of messy cartons and covers....soon to be straightened out and photographed when it is more presentable. I have a very major case of “stamproom” envy. Oh, what I could do in such a space.

Since I am away for a few days I will not be doing any real stamping. Instead I am “ shopping” and trying to find a few things on my “want and wish” list. Been trying to convince some one that they would be great Christmas gifts. No takers so far. Last year I was fortunate enough to get a VF Mint #10 Nova Scotia. Something that good not gonna happen this year.
all the best to Forum members. Davis

Thanks for starting this thread. No need for me to post my images as they would duplicate what you have displayed. I still have a few gaps in collection . I will keep acquiring as long as price is reasonable.

I looked in my collection and found that I do not have ANY stamps. I need to rectify that soon. I have very little from South America in general.
Been too Euro centric I think.

I have been busy sorting and preparing stamps for exchanges. Mounted last of my Liechtenstein collection. Will print pages tonight. Will have to wait til new year to put the album together. Trying to tidy up my stamp corner. Seems to be an endless struggle. The more I “ clean” the more forgotten stuff I find. I hope to commence the new year with a tidy desk. Here’s hoping.

Wow a great assortment of FDC. I have most of those stamps. I have considered collect FDC at one time. My m’égare stamp “ budget” does not permit it. I do have a few covers and post cards. I hope to post one day. Keep up your postings!

Brightonpete,
I too use the green and blue packages. I found that measurements on the blue packages are not the same as green ones. It says 24 mmbut a 24 mm stamp is too big. I have found this with all packages I bought. I think I has read in a post on a forum that the size difference is determined on whether it is the actual width of the strip. Or is the width from the inside “ display” area inside the mounting area. It has created a bit of frustration for me.

This is a most interesting and informative thread, i knew about mourning covers for ages but never paid much attention to them. I have seen a few popping up when looking around for stamps in my areas of interest.
as I have sent two cards of sympathy this week I wondered if it was custom to send condolences with a mourning cover.
i agree with those who find reading the cursive on covers. I am getting much better at it. My other love next to stamps is genealogy. I have spent many long hours trying to decipher texts in English, French, and German. I have to limit my self to a few hours at a time where online at an archive or at home.
I am amazed at how members of the forum come forward and explained what they see on the cover. I see marks and scribbles that mean nothing to me. I think I need to expand my knowledge just a bit.
I joined this forum because I was impressed at the knowledge contained in the posts. I decision I do not regret.
A big thanks to those who share knowledge that allows my eyes to open to see more that allows me to self educate.

I too have a few mint and used Mountie in my hoard. I never knew there were that many varieties.
i must admit that I have never seen an episode of the TV show mentioned in this post. Never showed on either of the two TV channels we had.

Welcome bcoldren,
I think you came to the right place to find answers for stamp collecting. There is always some one who knows the answer or advises where to look. I too, have Ohio issues you mentioned and never heard about them til I joined the forum. Yes, they came from Mike. So now when I am out browsing through stamps ,I look for them.
i do have an extensive UN collection from the beginning days and a few recent issues. I would not consider my self an expert, but do not hesitate to ask questions.
Happy Collecting.

Good for you David. The discovery of any variety is done just the way you are doing. I too look at everything that passes through my hands. I to date have found numerous high CV items by routinely measuring perfs, watermarking and louping most items. When looking at lots online examine all provided pictures very carefully.Use any means you may know to blow them up and look not only at condition but any abnormalities.Always consider that what you think you see may or may not actually be present.Your hopeful mind can over power your common sense. Consider no one would have found stitch watermarks without someone actually watermarking more common stamps. Frog, i will never give up the hunt. I have not found that invert, but I have discovered many little treasures. Some I have had for thirty years and have recently « discovered » stuffed between pages of books. So I did a search through my library. I think I was using my books as a vault in those days. Not huge values but they filled holes in the collection. I am now taking more time to look closer at stamps to educate myself and to be aware of what to look for. never too late to learn new things. thanks for the encouragement. David

Firstfrog,
i was nine or ten when I became aware of the Seaway invert. For the next few years I was obsessed with finding one or any other error. One I found out how pricy it would be o acquire, my interest dropped off. At least for the next ten years I collected any stamp. I still spent hours searching and hoping I might find something. No luck, but I still check any Canadian stamps I get, just in case. I do same for other countries I collect . I do set aside anything that looks « different » to me. So far have only found items where there has been a colour change over the years. I will keep looking. Never give up I tell myself. Thank you so much for posting the inverts.

Boy oh boy... with the rotating postal strike going on, I am STILL waiting for a bunch of Machines to arrive from Vancouver. Along with a bunch of other stuff! I'll be glad when one of the opposing parties blinks & settles their dispute!t I know how you are feeling. I have a few purchases that seem to be held up because of the strike actions. Hoping it gets resolved soon. At least I have been able to get mounts cut for my Machins. Page printing is about to start. I have decided to keep a very « basic » collection. I do not have patience to deal with the details of colour, paper, gum varieties. I know I would be banging my head to often on the stamp desk in frustration. david
