Good for you David. The discovery of any variety is done just the way you are doing. I too look at everything that passes through my hands. I to date have found numerous high CV items by routinely measuring perfs, watermarking and louping most items. When looking at lots online examine all provided pictures very carefully.Use any means you may know to blow them up and look not only at condition but any abnormalities.Always consider that what you think you see may or may not actually be present.Your hopeful mind can over power your common sense. Consider no one would have found stitch watermarks without someone actually watermarking more common stamps. Frog, i will never give up the hunt. I have not found that invert, but I have discovered many little treasures. Some I have had for thirty years and have recently « discovered » stuffed between pages of books. So I did a search through my library. I think I was using my books as a vault in those days. Not huge values but they filled holes in the collection. I am now taking more time to look closer at stamps to educate myself and to be aware of what to look for. never too late to learn new things. thanks for the encouragement. David

Firstfrog,
i was nine or ten when I became aware of the Seaway invert. For the next few years I was obsessed with finding one or any other error. One I found out how pricy it would be o acquire, my interest dropped off. At least for the next ten years I collected any stamp. I still spent hours searching and hoping I might find something. No luck, but I still check any Canadian stamps I get, just in case. I do same for other countries I collect . I do set aside anything that looks « different » to me. So far have only found items where there has been a colour change over the years. I will keep looking. Never give up I tell myself. Thank you so much for posting the inverts.

Boy oh boy... with the rotating postal strike going on, I am STILL waiting for a bunch of Machines to arrive from Vancouver. Along with a bunch of other stuff! I'll be glad when one of the opposing parties blinks & settles their dispute!t I know how you are feeling. I have a few purchases that seem to be held up because of the strike actions. Hoping it gets resolved soon. At least I have been able to get mounts cut for my Machins. Page printing is about to start. I have decided to keep a very « basic » collection. I do not have patience to deal with the details of colour, paper, gum varieties. I know I would be banging my head to often on the stamp desk in frustration. david

I have the 1d somewhere. I found it when I was sixteen years old in a collection that was given to me. At the time, it was the oldest stamp I owned. My first little treasure started me on that trek for old stamps.

I have finally got all mounts for the Machins cut. Next step is the page printing. Need to stock up on black ink. All mounts for Andorra and Liechtenstein are done. Monaco is next. Then on to the Canadian horde. Might be a productive long weekend.

I have to understand.....what is it with Machins ?..........they seem to be a "pain in the neck" for a "stamper" who do not have the SG cats. !!! Wishing all a great weekend.....tonight we go back an hour !! Atlantic Time (Eastern Canada) René Rene, a couple of sites i have found useful are adminware.ca/machin And. www.machin-stamp.co.uk. The first one is Canadian. He has great colour photos of the major types and lots of info about paper types, gum, and security features. He does not list any catalog numbers. I find the images sufficient. The second site is a dealer who lists and sell Machins. He has great images as well and does list by catalog number. hope this might lessen the frustration for you. david

As it is a cool, snowy night, I am starting my “ winter hibernation “ tonight. Means I hide out in my stamp space and get work done. Think I will start with mounting San Marino or Monaco. Pages are printed and ready to go. No excuses not to get some work done.

Well, I could fill a couple of niches in that! That's quite the collection you have, blaamand ! It looks like a great stamp room! Does anyone have anything on the order of his? What a great space he has. I have a few shelves in my library/office/stamp room but nothing like that. I should take over the guest room. Not sure how well that will work out. david

i'm just sorting through the Iceland stamps that came the other day. I sorted them as her Scott's but now SG. I don't have enough room in the stock book, so I'm shifting everything around to make room for the new additions. Ah, but it is the never ending job. Someone has to do it. david

I don't compare to Blaamand's class act but then I concentrate on a much narrower scope of collecting. My binders are mismatched d-rings bargain bought. The contents however...… p.s. I just won a New Brunswick #2 for less than 1/10 catalog. Congratulations on the great buy! david

I just downloaded the adminware free pages. It looks good for a start, but doesn’t include too much. I’d probably want the whole shebang & I’ll probably print it B&W instead of full colour. I think I’ll leave all the Regionals behind. Those just add so much more to the mix! Has anyone bought any of his album pages? Or is there something else that may be better? TIA! I have done same as you, brightonpete. Printed the free pages in black and white. I know I do not have the time nor patience to collect all varieties. Just now need to mount them. Here is a website I discovered that might be of use for you. He is a retailer but seems to have lots of images of many varieties hampsteadcastle.co.uk/Once I get mine on they pages, I think I will purchase from him to fill in the “holes”. have fun sorting . So far any interruption in service has been avoided. Both sides agreed to go back to negotiations to a settlement. Let’s hope they come to some agreement.

Rene ,
great to see these NB stamps. A great collection. I have all that I can afford in my NS collection, so I have moved to acquiring NB and PEI.
i do have a couple from both colonies. Can you recommend any books, site etc that can provide info on the colonial stamps?
happy collecting.

For me the choice of what do depends on the stamp and what I want to do with it.
as a rule I do not soak 1950 or earlier stamps. I trim and add to collection.
those that I do soak I usually keep for my self and when I have duplicates I keep them to trade.
as mentioned there are modern stamps that will not soak. With these I research a bit to if there are options other than soaking. If not a nice trim job and into the collection that go.
removing hinges depends on age of stamp. Pre 1950 I leave alone. Others depending on that I will soak. If not, with patience I will cut off as much of hinge as possible.
i know some of this can be time consuming. I find that there is not really a “ a one size fits all” solution to removing paper. Like most 5hings I customizze according to my needs.

Thanks for sharing!
a wonderful and informative post. I am glad you were able to find the information behind the stamp and share it. It is good to know that there is history behind a stamp. I just purchase the first two you posed.. Now I will see if I can find any of the paper variations. I recently decided that WWII occupied stamps will be my next Collins venture. I have seen stamps at various price ranges. Most, so far, look affordable.
knowimg me, it might be awhile before I actively work on it. Then again that will give me time to read and research.
thanks for the inspiration.

All you hard working collectors are putting me to shame. All I have been working on is cataloging the horde of Canadian stamps issued since 1995. I have had some for many years. Others were from those silly late night impulse buys. Once done that I will have mount and get them in albums. Also been puttering around with my Machin collection. All ready to put into album when I decide to print the pages. My “to do” list seems to be getting longer. At least I have kept my work space relatively organized. Now that cooler weather is approaching I will be spending more time inside trying to clear the back load. All the post about how hard you all working has inspired me to get working.

Still to horrible to do anything outside so I have been working on the « small » stamp projects. I was going to walk to postal outlet and mail a few things. Maybe after dinner when cooler. I could drop at post box one street away but I want hand cancels on this letters. I find that if you have more than one stamp on an envelop they do not get cancelled or butchered with a black marker. A few more things got sorted for trades and exchanges. Got mounts ready for the Machin Collection. Just need to top up on ink to print pages and I will be ready to roll. This is much more fun than cleaning out utility room.
Happy Stamping all.
