I've been reading Royal Mail stamps: a survey of British stamp design by Stuart Rose (Oxford, Phaidon Press, 1980; 128pp).
Mr Rose was the Post Office's Design Director from 1968 to 1976, which in my opinion was a golden age of commemorative stamp design, so it's interesting to read the thoughts of the man who, more than anybody else, made the consistent excellence of that period possible.
The book is well-written and the many illustrations are well chosen for relevance to the text. Six stars out of five!

I just added a 2016 version of the Scott C-F volume 2 catalog. Will now be able to identify the Canadian stamps in my collection.

Rose knew all the decisions, all the choices; the breakthroughs and lost chances. This is my favorite book on stamp design, far and away the best of the half-dozen or so worthwhile ones. Best of all, its readily available, and cheap.

Thanks for the recommendation renden! Looks like I could get the 2015 version from Amazon for about what I paid for this Scott catalog. For me, the advantage to the Scott catalog is the other countries included. I am going to add the Unitrade Canada Specialized to my wish list though as I think I will start specializing in Canadian stamps soon.

I bought it from France & Colonies Philatelic Society UK- 38 Sterling delivered to US It didn't sound like this was the last copy, but they say quantities were limited. HERE
148 pages in color, this doesn't appear to be a reprint (if it is they did a mighty fine job)! Good luck

I saw this at a stamp show yesterday and bought it. I know nothing about this book; I didn't even know that it existed. I haven't seriously pursued Czechoslovak philately, but I am into most of its neighbors, so I hope this volume will come in handy sooner or later.

looks a meaty tome and imagine there will be a good deal of interest. As a country, Czechoslovakia was part of the result of dismantling the Austro-Hungarian Empire after WW I - since the early '90s it's now a Republic I think and I believe now not so large, so for true Czechoslovakia maybe not so many issues to collect, but as always with eastern Europe it will be the early stamps that are of main interest. Best of luck.

Panic ! Not so much what’s in my library as what’s NOT in my library,
A specialised catalogue of Falkland Islands which I have had on eBay for several months, sold yesterday at last. Last weekend I tidied my desk as I had visitors and now I can’t find the book anywhere.
should be obvious , its bright pink cover , visible at 100 paces ought to stand out .
24 hours later I still can’t find it . Had almost every book off the shelves , filing cabinet raided boxfiles upsides down ….NADA!

Gerald Wellburn, BC PhilatelistDuring my recent visit to Victoria, BC, when I got to meet madbaker, I also met another stamper named Peter Newroth. Peter had attended my BESG online presentation, and he decided to gift me a copy of his book about local philatelic luminary Gerald Wellburn, cover for which is shown below. Wellburn was apparently the pre-eminent authority on stamps of British Columbia & Vancouver Island, and also a force in the local community, both philatelic and otherwise. I feel so honored that my new friend Peter gave me a copy of this book as a gift. Thank you so much, Peter! A quick glance through shows that it is well researched and illustrated. It contains interesting info from Wellburn's many philatelic publications, but also about his achievements in exhibiting and in establishing philately in the Victoria, BC community. For anyone interested in getting a copy of this book, please look here: www.vicstamps.com/wellburn_book.htmlNewroth, Peter R. Gerald E. Wellburn: A British Columbia Philatelist, 1900-1992. Gerald E. Received this recent auction win yesterday -- an unused copy of U.S. International Postal Rates, 1872-1996, by Anthony Wawrukiewicz and Henry Beecher. For $15.00, I think I got a very good deal! I can't believe that I'm quoting myself but it seemed appropriate in this instance. Today, the companion to this work was brought to my door. This unused copy of U.S. Domestic Postal Rates, 1872-1999 (revised 2nd edition) by Beecher and Wawrukiewicz was won at auction with a max bid of $20 (won at $17.50). My set is now complete!

I've been re-reading The Observer's Book of Postage Stamps, by Anthony S. B. New, published in 1967 by Frederick Warne of London. Mr New has very strong opinions about stamp design, but whether you agree with his opinions or not, he provides a huge number of facts.
The attached scan is blurred in the middle because I didn't want to damage the book by opening it completely flat.

"To the conquest of the sky, the legend of the Aeropostale". 2009 Catalan version of the 2008 French book "A l'Assault du ciel. La legende de l'Aropostale" An interesting novel/history about the Aeropostale line, from Toulouse to Dakar and South America.
Actually, the first stop after Toulouse, was my own city, Barcelona. A late good friend of mine had a nice postal history collection on Aeropostale-

Somewhat ratty looking, I picked this up at a meeting of the Collectors Club of New York for a few dollars when they were paring down their library. I find it to be an invaluable aid to deciphering and cataloging Bermuda postal history.

The Royal Mail Stamp Advisory Committee: First Review A very interesting publication from 1993 covering the stamps issued in 1992. Showing various preliminary designs and explaining the selection process prior to the final stamp selection. I don't know if there were any further issues. I cannot conceive of such a design process being used for, say, The Transformers stamps

3rd time is a charm- First two I saw were auctions (which I did not win ). This one had a "buy it now" price which seemed good enough! This may well be more information than i need, but I have it available!

Rob, REL1948 , that's another great book recommendation. I found a few copies around but at £300+ I'll have to give it a miss for now. Your Perkins Bacon book was also great but was £100 with postage until I found one for half that price and snapped it up. Maybe I'll have the same luck with The International Engraver's Line. Thanks, Daniel

I recently received 'The International Engravers Line' by Gene Hessler, 2005. I'm jealous! I looked for that for years but only found horribly expensive copies available and after enough of that I stopped looking. Perhaps I'll have to get back on the wagon again ... Ryan

Last addition to my library. A book i was looking for for ten years, unexpectly found in Spain by Soler y Llach (i paid more the shipment then the book)... It's not difficult to find, but at which price? Anyway, up to now, couldn't find the english version, i'd to please myself with the polish version... The book covers russian stamps used in Poland and a detailled description of the n. 1 of Poland, with varieties and forgeries, plus all the associated postal history, postmarks and the postal system of the time. Some scrap on the cover, but nice conditions

Added just beside its brother... and a sample of my library... BTW! In the last picture, that's just a first layer... behind the books there is a second layer... and that's just one of the shelves of the closet... I'm pretty proud of my library...
