Here's a nice cover front/large piece and I believe it is from Turkey. I have limited information on it and collect it for the bisect. If you have any info, would be appreciated. It looks like the 2 Pia 1888 Issue stamp. I've been told that the half of the rectangular postmark at the bottom right is known. The negative postmark on the stamp is common. The overprint shows 1 Pia for the bisect.

The rectangular 3 lined part postmark looks familiar to me, but my only images show lines closer together, and sharp corners, something tells me a censor mark perhaps. 4. The only other reference, I have is a cancellation similar, that originated in Bagdad, sold ebay $40 on piece with Bagdad Pmk. (1889) 5. The 1 Pi circular Opt differs widely between the two images, suggesting either there were multiple Opt hammers, or one of you have an imposter. Best I can do. If the negative pmk is common, can we have a look, if you have an image please?

If I had to make a choice, yours looks more genuine, the example that sold for $40, appears to have issues. The fleurons look dodgy, The Font throughout the CDS is not consistant The Script in the circular Opt, three dots are shown as a "T"

Rod, If you look at the bottom of this wikipedia page, you can see examples of early Turkey postmarks. It seems the box postmarks are different for each town. Someone once told me that this particular town always used blue ink and this makes it more genuine. The negative postmark that ties the stamp is also a common type of early postmark from Turkey. I guess there are alot of forgeries in older Turkish stamps. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postage_stamps_and_postal_history_of_TurkeyThe eBay example you have there is different and may come from a period or area where there was French Alliances. I have seen these French style postmarks but near turn of the century. There are many examples of older Turkish postmarks here: www.djmarchives.com/stamps/ottoman-empire.html

I did get some info on this cover front. The overprint is a P 1 Baghdad overprint. So I assume the negative postmark is from Bahgdad and that is the origin.
The rectangular box postmark is a Blue Box postmark of Kirkuk, Kurdistan and is known in use at Kirkuk up until 1892. The black arabic script at the right is the addressee and translates to "Kirkuk 5, municipality of T*****, Doctor Hemplem" (roughly)

Unless they have been added to the Classic in the recent past, they are not listed in Scott. Yvert and Michel, and maybe others, but not Scott.
The stamps on the right are the low value of four and the stamps on the left are the second value. There are also 5g and 10g values in different designs. I'm not sure if you have varieties there...they don't look like straight duplicates. I don't have any specialist material on these, though.

Well, I'll be. I gave up on those things because I couldn't find them in Scott but didn't think to look through my Michel or my Pulko (Turkish catalogue, text is in Turkish which is completely inscrutable for me so I don't look in it very often). There they are, listed in both. The Michel catalogue lists them as postal tax stamps for the Red Crescent, children's aid, etc. The 1 ghurush stamp exists overprinted with 20 para value from 1927. Yay! our TSF Librarian came through Postal tax you say ? then I wonder why Scott fails to list? Further curiosity : Why does Yvert give a Cat number 16 and 17 ? suggests others earlier?

Stanley Gibbons SGT1837-1839 1958 Turkey ceased Postal tax Stamps in 1958 My Pulko (Turkish language) catalogue lists these as well as a few other late issues which aren't shown in my Scott or Michel. The first snippet here is the listing for the original 1957 set, the second snippet is the listing for 1958 stamps in differing colours. Ryan

Further curiosity : Why does Yvert give a Cat number 16 and 17 ? suggests others earlier? That Michel listing is section C of the postal tax stamps (equivalent to the Scott listing but Scott is missing the first 7 stamps, perhaps others too - didn't look closely). Section A is for postal tax "forerunners", 15 face-different issues (6 of which are also listed with overprints), plus there is a section B for postal tax air mail stamps, listed in Scott after the other postal tax issues. I would guess Yvert includes the forerunners, issues related to the Italo-Turkish War. Ryan

There they are, listed in both. The Michel catalogue lists them as postal tax stamps for the Red Crescent, children's aid, etc. The 1 ghurush stamp exists overprinted with 20 para value from 1927. Ryan These are Turkish Red Crescent charity stamps. There were 4 issued in the set, as seen in the cat picture - your stamps (2 copies of each) are the first two in the series. They were issued, according to Isfila, in 1924 and have cat # K22-K25. The lowest value (1k) was also re-issued with a 20 para surcharge in 1927, and is K28. The (2011) values are minimal - $1/$.50 mint/used for the first 2; $1 mint/$5 used for K24 & $7 mint/$7.50 used for K25. K28 (surcharged) is $5 mint/$10 used. (prices converted from Turkish lira; changed alot, but current value is similar in $...) No idea why Scott doesn't list these. (Ask them!) Also not sure why the term 'forerunners' is used - the first Red Crescent charity stamps were issued in 1912. There are 21 stamps prior to this set... As to the 1958 1/2 kurus/purple postal tax stamp - no - also not listed in Scott. The Pulko catalog listings above show both the 1957 & 1958 version, which are simply different colors. The Turkish description of them are the colors: for Y246 - grey, brown, red and for Y268 - lilac purple, red...

Thank you very much MDRoth, we all benefit, with you adding to our knowledge base. Tops.
Members : FYI The most valuable stamps in the Turkish Postal Tax Stamps are......... 1955 Sc RA #179 $375 (2009) 1955 Sc RA#180 $875
Also : FYI If anyone was curious as myself, to why Postmarks often are "STAMBOUL" (>1930) wiki Stamboul was used in Western languages as an equivalent of İstanbul, until the time it was replaced by the official new usage of the Turkish form in the 1930s. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Western European and American sources often used Constantinople to refer to the metropolis as a whole, but Stamboul to refer to the central parts located on the historic peninsula, i.e. Byzantine-era Constantinople inside the walls

The four Red Crescent stamps from 1926 are listed in SG under Obligatory Tax Stamps, T1035-T1038.

Just to round out treatment by the Big Four, Yvert has these under Timbres de Bienfaisance [Charity Stamps], for which they say:
The use of these stamps benefiting the Red Crescent and child welfare was mandatory on religious and national holidays.
The category listings start with 1910, six designs numbered 1-6; then 1915 six more designs numbered 6A-6F; then 1916, overprints on previous stamps, numbered 7-12; then 1923 three new designs numbered 13-15, bringing us to these. That's how they came to be numbered 16 and 17 in Yvert, and why Isfila would have them at K22 and K23.

My first Gibbons reference usually is the 1965 specialised (Europe and Colonies - Turkey) They were not listed there. They were , however in the 2005 "Simplified" Thanks Jaysee. My query of 12 years ago, has still not been answered....... What is "typeno-wrap" ?

I think that is inaccurate coding that showed up in the text. I think it is saying a Type 104 surcharge, or similar types.
They didn't want the "T" and the "104" to end up on different lines.
