My gift from madbaker is compared to the stock. I am soooo embarrassed about how many stamps I can use. Some of the older ones are still left and of course the "Bluenose" will be heading to a safe harbor. But I had almost nothing of the "newer" ones. Thanks again to madbaker , now it almost looks like a "collection".

Day 2 of vacation week from work. Spent the last day and a half catching up on the backlog of new issues for Colnect, as there was a huge jump in issues due to the 150th Anniversary of the UPU being celebrated on 9th October and my work schedule didn't allow much time to add them all. In the last two weeks almost 850 new items have been added to the 2024 listings at Colnect from around the world. colnect.com/en/stamps/list/year/2024/new/14Got my 2024 USA stamps ordered from a dealer on HipStamp that charges face +~50% for single stamps. Since I really have no need for 20 copies of a stamp, it just works out better to pay above face for single copies. Got all but the 3 high-value definitives (will get those direct from USPS when the High-Value Collection for 2024 drops on 1 November). All total will be US$200 for this year's stamps including the high values, or an average weekly cost of ~US$3.86, which is cheaper than a Whopper from Burger King per week (and most likely much healthier).

Still trying to identify & mount stamps from the auction lot I won earlier this month. Quite a few have been put into envelopes for later identification by the Deegam system when I have more time. I've come across quite a few "errors" not listed by SG or Deegam (unless I've missed the Deegam profiles). Quite a few broad bands in the lot and a few with odd phosphor bands which I don't already have. I'm working on the booklets today with the emphasis on getting the cylinder numbers mounted. This is the difficult bit in my estimation, as a high percentage of booklets are/were printed in more than 1 column, so lots of different checks to identify which column the same booklets are from, can't get my head round this one. My work table at the moment.

That's a very inviting work table, drblade! I admire your patience. Deegam goes deep! My work table is currently taken over by a jigsaw puzzle in the service of marital group projects. So my stamps are waiting for me for a few days.

Short Trip This WeekGreetings, stampers far and wide! I hope this post finds you all as well as your circumstances allow. Today, my wife and I are driving to the SF Bay Area to visit some old friends who are housebound. So, no stamping again until after we return home on Thursday. The good news is that I had a good weekend of stamp activities, and I have left my desk in pretty good order: • Went through classic trade material from North Borneo and French Oceania • Gathered trade material from Laos (1965-71) and sent off to trading partner • Created country collections for Korea (pre-1905) and Siam (pre-1930) • Sorted soaked stamps from the previous weekend after drying and press-flattening, mainly from a Cape of Good Hope mixed lot • Made a couple of decent posts on the Forum • Went through a manila envelope of mixed stamps from the huge hoard lot and did general sorting between pre-1930 and everything later It felt good just to get some long overdue stamp projects done. I think I will start making it more of a priority to get my little country collections put together more regularly. When I did it this weekend, I also spent a happy hour or so looking through all the other pages I had previously put together, which I don’t do often enough. Sometimes, I get so absorbed by new projects or acquisition that I forget to enjoy what I already have. Stay stampy, all!

My stamp time has been severely curtailed due to the problems here with electricity supplies.Since my last post a month ago,the situation has deteriorated.New blackouts have just been announced.Three sessions without power 4am to 8am 11am to 4pm and 7pm to midnight.Luckily, internet connection is available but little time to recharge batteries !!! Malls and shopping centres have generators so these are usually busy. However, during these blackouts there are no traffic lights working and driving is a problem.Even in normal times this is challenging...now,even more so.... Haven't had a lot of time for stamping this week ... too many chores getting ready for the colder weather and doing yardwork. So, I was looking forward to my local club meeting last night - the last one before our Fall Show and Sale this weekend. Typical of such things, people were holding off buying stuff ... saving their money for the big sale on Saturday. So, I'm a bit overwhelmed this morning with all the stuff I was able to get for next to nothing at the auction last night. I mean seriously .. less than pennies a stamp. They weren't the best items we've ever had on auction but they were interesting ... and nobody was bidding. And, on the way to the meeting, I got my latest COVID shot and the annual flu shot - one in each arm. So, I'm using that to get out of yardwork today (smile) so I can have a closer look at last night's acquisitions and make a want list for tomorrow's big sale. Keep stampin' ... Cheers, PS - From last night, I ended up with 150 pages, absolutely jammed, of Romanian stamps from 1940 to 1970. And, an old KABE stock-book full of interesting Hungarian Stamps. If I'm lucky some of the occupation stamps will be real (smile). And, an old handmade, handwritten Czechoslovakian album that was obviously a labour of love for some collector who made copius notes in pencil, and sometimes using a typewriter, under each stamp. It must have taken him years. I would like to have known that guy.

scanning, scanning, and more scanning! I had a slight scare- while doing backlit scans for paper ID I suddenly started getting a greenish or pinkish vertical line going through the image..... same location on the scanner bed?!? Moving the target just moved the line to a different spot and with backlit scans the area for scanning is a narrow center swath of the flatbed.
After some googling, it seems as even a mere speck of dust up on the upper glass in the calibration area will cause this refraction.
I was delighted that a good cleaning with rubbing alcohol took care of that.
That last thing I want to do is change scanners 'midstream'!
Keep on stamping!

I've been buying Scandinavian used stamps (mainly Iceland, Norway & Greenland) on internet. Last Sunday, at the stamp market, I bought a few good Switzerland, Sweden and Iceland used stamps. I was also gifted an envelope of mixed used stamps by a fellow collector, that only looks for mint ones, "to play with". There were many Irish, Cypriot, Maltese, British Commonwealth, Moçambique and indonesian stamps. I collect Ireland and keep the Western European stamps, although I don't like modern Malta stamps. As for Moçambique and Indonesia, I'll either pass to another collector friend that might use them or bring to the thrift shop. Anyway, this week, I'm having a good time "playing with stamps". As next Friday is a bank holiday, I've a lot of time ahead...

Bought a stamp lot with a lot of US mint sheet. I have been going through that and have been very pleased with my purchase. Sometimes you just don’t know what you’re going to get and if the stamps are damaged. This lot was well worth the money.

Spent some time yesterday and today sorting a world mix. The highlight so far, a few early St. Lucia. It’s always a good day when some new QV issues land on my desk.
Also picked up a couple mixtures of Malaysia and Thailand. Both should grow my collection of those areas nicely.

I had an eventful weekend without moving too far from home.
On Friday, I went across the street to meet an older gentleman who donated his Canada collection to our local philatelic charity. He's 95 and is still going strong, but thought it was time to pass his collection on. It was fun going through it all; nothing rare but he had an eye for selecting fine copies, even of recent issues. It turns out he's from Saskatchewan too, and lived only a few blocks from us back home. Now we live across the street from each other. Small world, eh?
Today, the clutter of a myriad of small club purchases got me down, so I gathered up my 'rest of the world' shoebox and went through it all. Covers are put away and 2/3 of the stamps too. I still have an envelope of 102 cards for Europe and another for Africa to sort and get into stock books, then I will retire the shoebox.
With the clocks turning back in Canada (still a novelty for me -- we never did this in Saskatchewan!) it's now dark before 5pm, so I think there will be plenty of stamping time on the horizon. I feel like cocooning, big time.

A friend for some 30 years has run a Circulating club packet which runs round UK members with 8-10 members booklets on approval. Buyers take what you need and pay the organiser who then pays out to the sellers .
there are 4 circuits GB, Commonwealth Modern , Empire to Geo Vi and foreign. A new packet is launched each month for each circuit and will usually take 6-8 months to go the rounds.
It has been such a useful outlet for selling surplus individual stamps, my own or on behalf of folks inherited collections being disposed of, over a year I have had 35-40 booklets circulated this way with regular cheque payments bringing in ££ or £££ monthly.
Now the disturbing news arrives he is retiring his packet operation at the end of the year and that selling outlet will shut down.
i have just mailed him my last 4 booklets for circulation during the first part of 2025. I am gutted! 😞

Alex ( vikingeck), I had a similar experience when I first came to live here in Israel. I joined a local packet circuit club for both exchanges and sales and it was a great source of material for my first few years in a new place. Then it stopped. And boy, did I miss it. So I feel your pain. Lately I have been pricing most of my collections ready for listing and/or taking to the bourse in Tel Aviv next week. It has been quite a task. I have also attended (online) a few local auctions where the strength in Middle East/Judaica/Israel items is so strong I won only one lot !! Even my over-the-top $100 bids were blown away. My palms are empty, but there is still a bit of cash in my wallet. Who said that ? Londonbus1

On Monday night I bought a box of "stuff" at our local club auction. I don't always bid on such unsorted masses of material, but occasionally I reward myself for working through material I already have. Now I rifled through this box before bidding, but now that I have it at home I can't recall what's there and this is what I enjoy. I take my time working through it and each binder, stock book and package becomes like Christmas - a great big surprise.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

The past 2 weeks I have been working my way through the old collection I was given while home in Nova Scotia. The stamps mounted in the albums were pretty well all from the 1940-50's era. I filled a few dozen holes in my world wide collection. There was nothing of any great value but still a nice project. The interesting and frustrating thing was the way my friend had mounted each and every stamp. I will ask him the next time we chat who taught him to double hinge them. Used stamps could be removed quite successfully by sliding tongs through the middle on the side. Sadly many mint did not survive due to excessive wetting resulting in them getting stuck to the album pages. I have now worked myself out of a job and will try to sell the balance and pass the proceeds along to him. I will top it up with a fair amount for items I have kept.

I'm assuming that the person double hinging didn't want the stamp to be accidently lifted off the page as occasionally happens with single hinged stamps.

A Little Stamping When I CanGreetings, stampers everywhere! I hope this post finds you all as well as you can be these days. I have been feeling a bit off recently, which has not been helped by getting a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot yesterday. This weekend has some family activities for me, so I am not sure how much stamping there will be. I am hoping to do a little bit today: - Sort and put away stamps from press-flattening after soaking
- Go through trading material (multiple tasks for different people)
- Catch up on stamp-related correspondence
- Organize a new country collection if I have time
The pending onset of winter means much nicer weather here in So Cal, so I should also probably try to get out in the sunshine for a walk. Some exercise might do me good. Below is a photo of stamps initially sorted from the huge hoard lot I received, some of which have now been soaked. Lots of hinge remnants and adherent paper, but still, some very nice stamps to go through. Much nicer than the average mixed lot. Stay stampy, all!

Yesterday, I went to the stamp market, sold some duplicates to a friend (for the purchasing price), and bought a few cinderellas both Catalan and from abroad.
I was specially hapy with the 4 2014 Catalonia's mini-sheets. They're form a long series, started around 2010, which I find interesting, but I'm not ready to pay what sellers are normally asking for it. For years I've waiting for a retailer to bring me a complete set for a decent price. Yesterday, when the stamp market was aproaching closing time (it's unusual, for me to stay, that long there) someone (known since a long time) offered me a 2014 for half the normal price, I accepted and, he also offered me the black prints (which I knew existed, but have rarely seen) after some bargaining, I got both sets (already shown on the Catalonia cinderellas thread).
I also, bought a second-hand 2001 Yvert et Tellier W. Europe (countries H to Z) catalog for just 5 € As it covers about 80% of the countries that I collect up to year 2000, It will be very useful when going to stamp markets to avoid buying duplicates, which happens too often.
So, not a bad day...

Jeepers, between Colnect and AlbumEasy, it's far too easy to get carried away. I spent the past few days making pages for Australian definitive series. Colnect has the stamp dimensions and the ability to filter based on definitive sets, so the information is close at hand. And once I find my rhythm, I can make a page in AlbumEasy in a minute or two. I made pages for all the definitives from 1938 - 2004. The only problem is that I made pages for several sets that I don't own, but look really nice in the pictures. So now I have to go shopping!

With Canada Post going on strike, I won't be getting anything in the mail for a bit ... no point in using eBay or bidding on the current China Stamp Society auction. So, even though I have more than enough projects to work on and more than enough stampy stuff to play with, I went to my local club meeting last night and ... went overboard. It was so easy to use the strike as an excuse to bend (break) the budget. It just so happened that one of the dealers brought me a 3" thick binder full of Post WW2 covers ... a wide range of censor marks, censor stamp varieties, a typology of censor tapes, postmarks from the various occupation zones. So, I bought it. In my defense, it has some cool things to study. This morning, for example, I've been looking at this December 13, 1948 Dresden (Russian Zone) cover to C. G. Campbell at the Men's Residence at Doane College (now University) in Crete, Nebraska. Cool cover, nice stamps ... but it's the purple Russian Censor stamp on the back that is its most interesting feature. The Russian's were experimenting with censor markings. I understand that this particular stamp was used between January 1, 1947 and November 14, 1949. Around the edge of the circular mark it reads, 'Soviet Zone Military Censor'. In the middle, the number 5327 is interesting. The first and last numbers, '57' was assigned to Saxony. The middle two numbers are apparently the ID number of the censor who examined the mail. I have 100+ more to study, cool. I won't be buying anything anytime soon. O wait, I can't, the mail is not working.

I watched the latest APS/APRL board meeting by zoom. It was set for a 2 hr meeting and had to leave after 2.5 hrs, This is the first one where the presenters were the department heads but not sure if this is the norm. There was a lot of passion. The board was mostly silent but not sure if they had seen the information before. A few stood out by asking questions but definitely no hard ball questions. The next election will be done via online for the most members which I see as a challenge for many who are older and not interested in anything digital. That is, Scott English was trying to increase participation in the election but it will be interesting to see if it works,
